Hermione took Daisy straight to her flat. Harry was sitting on the sofa in just his clean pajama pants, and looked up when the two entered. Harry looked at Hermione, who he thought was supposed to be at work. Then he looked at Daisy, who blushed and turned away.
“Um….hi.” he said. Hermione sighed.
“Before you ask: I was late to work and my boss was pissed. Then I got basically assaulted by a male employee, when I kicked him in the crotch afterwards I got fired. Instead of coming here I went straight to the bookstore to calm down. There I met this little lady, Daisy Melfy, who happens to be the American cousin of Lucius Malfoy. Well, just as I was getting introduced to her the devil himself appeared. And about the same time we were sizing each other up, this little one started her female issues, and with no one else to help her, I brought her here to….uh….help.” she said, explaining the story in one swift paragraph. Harry looked at her blankly.
“Kay.” He said, and turned back to the television. Hermione sighed with relief. Gods…if she’d had to explain that to Ron she’d have been there all day. As the two disappeared into Hermione’s bedroom, Harry shivered.
“Eew…..female issues…” he said.
~~
Hermione had the interesting, yet highly awkward, responsibility of teaching Daisy the basics of that ‘special time of the month.’ Daisy listened, her face red the entire time, until Hermione finally let her put the knowledge to ‘practical use.’ Daisy had to make use of Hermione’s shower to clean herself up, and Hermione did some quick scourgifying to clean the girl’s underthings up. When Daisy was clean and clothed, she met Hermione in the little den.
“All right, let’s hurry to the store before I have to send you home. Gods forbid Lucius Malfoy be sent on a pad run.” Hermione said. Harry snorted at the two, but sobered quickly.
“Mione….you know I trust you….but if he tries anything I want you to tell me….so I can personally come kick his arse.” Harry said. Daisy, unaware of her cousin’s dubious past, came to the defense of his honor.
“Pardon?” she said, her icy blue eyes narrowing at Harry, her arms crossing across her chest.
“You don’t know him like we do.” Harry said softly.
“Whatever the sins of his past are doesn’t matter to me. I’m going to tell you once and once only. Do not speak ill of my cousin in my presence. This is your only warning. The next time it happens I’m going to go Native on your lily-white ass and use that pretty dark hair for a belt decoration.” She snapped. Hermione’s eyes widened a bit as she bit her lip to keep from laughing. She supposed if she pretended she didn’t completely hate Malfoy senior she could understand Daisy defending him…but the look on Harry’s face was priceless. Daisy turned to Hermione, clearly upset. “Please, Hermione. Let’s just go. I don’t like your friend at all….” She said softly.
Hermione ushered Daisy out the door, and turned back to looked at Harry, who still looked at bit shocked. He’d just been threatened with scalping by a thirteen-year-old American girl. Today was an odd day…
~~
Hermione stood at the gates of Malfoy Manor, very annoyed. He hadn’t opened the floo for her to use a public one, and he had strong anti-apparition wards all around the damned yard. You’d think when he’d told her to bring Daisy home that he’d at least make preparations for that to happen.
Just as she was about to attempt to kick the large wrought iron monstrosities in, they swung open, allowing entrance. Hermione and Daisy walked up the impossibly long walkway, and Hermione had to admire the view on the way up. The walk was trimmed with short hedges, and the lawn was perfectly even and manicured. There were small trees dotting the front lawn, and behind the enormous and stately house there was a forest.
“I bet those woods would be perfect for camping.” Daisy said to herself, looking longingly at the thick forest. Her mother and father had taken her camping loads of times. And they did it the old fashioned way, too. She could build a fire, hunt down her food (squirrel was good) and cook it over the open flame. If she so felt inclined, she could also find wild ‘shrooms and veggies to make stew. Wild bird’s eggs were also great scrambled up in the morning with some wild mushrooms.
“Probably full of Dementors and Centaurs.” Hermione commented.
“Centaurs will leave you alone if you mean the forest no harm. And Dementors, believe it or not, will not come near a campsite lined with an unbroken circle of salt.” Daisy said. Hermione narrowed her eyes at the forest. Really? She’d need to research that…
As they finally reached the front door to the Manor, Hermione was a bit surprised to see Lucius standing there waiting for them.
“I do apologize for my forgetfulness. I should have opened the Floo for you.” He said.
“Oh it’s fine….we enjoy hiking several miles just to reach people’s houses.” Hermione said sarcastically, slapping a smile on her face. Lucius regarded her coolly.
“I would like to….thank you for….assisting Miss Melfy with her…..problem.” Lucius said to Hermione. Hermione nearly laughed aloud at the look on Lucius’ face.
“Quite welcome.” She said with a bit of a smirk. There was an awkward pause.
“Would you like to come in for some kind of refreshment?” Lucius asked awkwardly.
“I like my liver undissolved, thank you very much….” Hermione said. Lucius frowned sharply.
“Poisoning guests is so juvenile.” He said, and turned to walk back into the house, with or without them. Daisy tugged on Hermione’s arm.
“You can come see my rooms. Mr. Malfoy put a private library in there…I’d like to browse my new books.” She said.
Lucius turned back to them as Daisy pulled Hermione into the foyer.
“Before you two go off for a bit of ‘girl time’… I have a surprise for you, Daisy. If you would follow me to the parlor.” He said, and began to walk. Daisy and Hermione looked at each other, and Daisy shrugged.
“I dunno. But I’m curious.” Daisy said. “Come on!” she said, and took off after her cousin. Hermione stood there awkwardly for a moment, before going after Daisy. Shit….she was going to get herself killed one of these days.
The walk to the parlor was quite magnificent. The old house was filled with rich tapestries and fancy paintings. It was like something out of a magazine. Even Hermione begrudgingly admitted its beauty.
As they approached the parlor door, Lucius turned and stopped them.
“During your….absence….I decided that you need a bit of structure in your life.” Lucius said, looking at Daisy. Daisy raised a dark eyebrow.
“…..kay….” she said.
“So I made a few calls….and pulled a few strings….and I have set you up with a winning team of tutors and coaches.” He said, and beckoned her closer. Daisy’s eyes widened a bit as she stepped toward the parlor doors, and was met with the sight of several people standing to greet her. The people quickly queued up, and the first one, a man, held out his hand for her. Daisy put her hand in his, and he leaned down low to kiss her fingers.
“I am Jacques Fornier, and I will be teaching you proper etiquette.” He said, his thick French accent slurring some of his words together. He then stepped aside, allowing a rather plump woman to step forward.
“I’m Coco Maes. Mr. Malfoy told me you do a bit of sewing. I’m here to help you perfect that art. We’ll make a seamstress out of you yet!” she said, her voice high and bubbly.
The next woman stepped forward, and Daisy knew she would hate her. She was short and skinny, her grey hair pulled back into a tight bun. “Gertrude Cummings. Mr. Malfoy requested you learn to speak fluent Latin and French.” She said, her voice sharp and cold. She sounded faintly Irish.
Daisy looked at the three people before her, and then looked at Lucius, who looked very pleased with himself. Not wanting to hurt her cousin’s feelings, she gave a shaky, watery smile.
“Wonderful.” She said softly.
Hermione looked at the three new people, and then at Daisy. If Mr. Malfoy couldn’t see that this was extremely unwanted, then he was an idiot.
“Now that you’ve met your new teachers, you may go and do whatever it is you were going to do.” Lucius said to Daisy. Daisy nodded mutely, and walked out of the room. Hermione followed behind her silently, watching the girl warily.
When they had finally reached her room, she pushed open the door and went straight to her couch.
“He really thinks he’s helping me, doesn’t he?” she asked, and looked up as Hermione stood in the doorway.
“I may not like Mr. Malfoy….but I’ll give him one thing….he does indeed try to do what he thinks is best for his family.” She said.
“Why don’t you like my cousin?” Daisy said, raising her eyes to meet Hermione’s. Hermione took a deep breath, and sighed softly.
“It’s complicated.” Hermione said.
“I have the brain power to understand complex things. I’m thirteen, not three…” Daisy said, a little annoyed. Hermione shrugged.
“Fine. I’ll tell you a story. It all started a loooong time ago with a man named Tom Riddle.”
