Deck the Halls

Reason for the Season

Chapter Five: Deck the Halls

Harry really didn’t know what to do or say. He fidgeted, pushing his glasses up his nose and running his hand through his hair.

“Ah, could I speak to you in the kitchen?” Harry asked looking at his old school rival.

“Harry, I…” Hermione started, she stood with Brian in her arms and Jamison wrapped around her leg.

“I won’t hurt him ‘Mione, I just want to speak with him.” Harry promised.

Hermione nodded, “Who wants to play knights?” she asked the boys as she made her way to the back bedroom that functioned as a playroom.

The two wizards made their way into the kitchen.

“Malfoy, I wont lie to you, I don’t like the idea of you being with Hermione.”

“That doesn’t really surprise me Potter.”

“But, I have checked your records in the Auror archives and I have seen all the help you have given to rebuild our world after the war.”

“Again not surprised, I suppose Weasley told you I was here last weekend?”

“Yes Ron told me.”

“Potter I promise I will try my hardest not to hurt Hermione in any way. I know I was a prat in school, and don’t deserve what she has given me, but I will not take it for granted.”

“You were a prat, but you make her happy, for some reason. If you do hurt her though, I am warning you, they will be gathering your pieces for years after I’m done with you. She is my sister and I love her like no other.” His voice was low and his emerald eyes darkened.

“I swear that if I do hurt her, you can do whatever you like to me.” Draco promised.

“I’ll hold you to that. Let’s go find my two terrors then.” Harry turned on his heel and headed back toward the playroom, Draco on his heels.

“I will save you Auntie “Mione” Jamison promised, the five year old was fighting off a magical shadow in the form of a dragon. “Brian go save Auntie from the castle while I stop the dragon!”

“Okay!” His three-year-old brother agreed. He began to climb the stairs of the ‘tower’ Hermione had made.

When he tried to make it to the top stair he was stopped.

“Jamie it’s blocked!” Brain yelled as his brother jabbed his wooden sword toward the shadowy beast.

“Use the magic words.” He instructed his younger brother.

“Oh yeah, Please!” he yelled out and charged up to his waiting Aunt.

“I got you Auntie!”

“Oh thank goodness, is the dragon vanquished?” she asked with a dramatic sigh.

Just then the shadow burst apart.

“I got him! You are saved now.”

“Thank you my brave knights!” she kissed their cheeks.

“That was some fighting boys.” Harry said.

“Auntie was trapped by an evil witch- who stole her from her true love -and locked in that tower with a dragon- so we had to defeat it and save her.” Jamison explained in a rush.

“Are you going to find her true love?” Harry asked his sons.

“I guess we should,” though Jamison.

“But we don’t know who he is!” exclaimed Brian.

“I can help you there.” Said Draco who had been standing in the door way watching

“Are you her true love?” asked Jamison

“Yes, and I have been looking for her for a long time.” He smiled and looked at Hermione.

“Oh good thing we saved her.” said Brian, “Come on Auntie ‘Mione,” he grabbed her hand and brought her over to Draco.

Draco took her hand and kissed her fingers, “My Lady” he bowed.

“You need to kiss her like in the stories auntie and mummy read us. That is how the fairy tales end.” Brain explained.

“Are you certain?” Draco asked with a smile on is face.

“Yes, haven’t you read any stories?” Jamison asked.

“Well if you say so,” and with that Draco bent Hermione over his arm and gave her a kiss to rival any story.

Harry had actually visited to ask Hermione to watch the boys for the night, he was on call and Ginny had been called over to help Fleur with the new baby, which made four for her and Bill.

Hermione could never say no.

Once Harry had headed out to work, Hermione turned to the boys, “Do you want to help us decorate the Christmas tree?”

“Yes!” they said together,

“Okay let’s go get the decorations.”

After digging through the crawl space for her Christmas boxes and getting everything out and open, Draco was left tangled in a string of lights and the boys where busy playing in the corner, bored with the adults.

“Draco just use magic, or I am going to have to keep you here and make you the tree.”

“You can keep me here all you want just not as your Christmas tree.” With a quick swish of his wand the lights were perfectly draped among the branches.

“There, now all you need are the decorations.”

“Right, Brian, Jamison, come pick out some ornaments to hang up.”

The boys came running and dived on the box filled with little shiny trinkets to dress the tree with.

It was an interesting affair; Draco spent most of the evening with one of the boys on his shoulders to reach the high branches. There was a slight tussle between the boys when it came to a small wooden train. Draco had found a little sleigh and all was well again.

Once the tree was weighed down with colorful ornaments, the boys had once again lost interest and found their way back to the playroom.

“The only thing left is the star and we’re done.” Said Hermione as she looked over the tree. She reached into the box and pulled out the large gold star made out of fine worked gold wire.

They were both just too short to reach the top bough.

“Hop on my back.” Draco said turning so his back faced her.

“What?”

“I can hold you up high enough to get it up there, I know you don’t want to use magic.”

“Okay,” and with that Draco kneeled down and helped Hermione get her balance as she wrapped her legs around his waist.

He carefully made his way closer to the tree and Hermione reached up and balanced the star on top, making sure it was straight.

“Perfect, I declare this tree decorated and fit for presents!” she proclaimed as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders to keep from falling.

“Hazzah!” he laughed.

Hermione leaned over and kissed his cheek, “Thank you”

Draco turned his head and nuzzled his nose against hers “You are very welcome.”

“Piggy-backs!” The thunderous charge of little boys was heard coming from around the sofa.

“Okay, you watch those two and I’ll make dinner.”

“Sure.” He said as he lowered her legs back to the floor.

“Good luck,” she wished as she made her way to the kitchen.

~~

“Dinner!” called Hermione. She looked up to see Draco come crawling into the kitchen with her two nephews on his back.

“Yeah pizza!” they squealed.

“Mercy,” cried Draco as the boys bounced on him.

“Okay boys who wants juice?”

“ME PLEASE!”

“Good sit at the table and I will get your juice.”

“Thank you!” they scrambled off of the poor wizard.

“Are you alright?”

“Yup, I just can’t feel my knees.” He said still on the floor.

She laughed, “Here let me help you up.”

~~

Later as the boys lay fast asleep in their beds that had been transfigured in the playroom, Draco and Hermione lay on the couch together enjoying tea and watching the fire.

“Do you watch everyone’s children?” Draco asked suddenly.

“Just the ones I know.” She teased, “Yeah I do, it’s nice to have some life in this house.”

“You are wonderful with them.”

“So are you, no offence, but I was a little surprised.”

“Me too. I never really had little ones around.” The clock struck midnight.

“It’s getting late,” he said has he looked up at the old mantle clock.

“It is.” Hermione replied looking at him.

“I should go.” He made no move to leave, looking into her bright whiskey colored eyes.

“Do you want to stay, you could help me with breakfast.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.” She answered, “It has been a long time since I slept next to someone. And I know this is kinda fast, but it is not like we are complete strangers…”

“Not too fast at all,” he gently kissed her nose and then her lips ever so softly.

A/N Hope you all enjoyed this chapter, it was fun to write. My family is full of little kids (13 all under the age of 7!, my older brothers, cousins and close family friends have all suddenly decided to reproduce is mass quantity.) So when I go back home I tend to have to dodge toys all over the living room floor and have my limbs used as a jungle gym.

Thanks to all my reviewers, you are wonderful!

Cheers,

xoxo Sarah
