Ch. 5 Why I Love the Rain

To say Hermione was frazzled would be an understatement. She was about to have a magical breakdown. She had arrived to her office Monday morning in a cheerful mood, steel reeling from the almost kiss that Ginny interrupted.

Her smile vanished instantly when she opened the door to her little hole-in-the-wall. There was a stack of parchments the owls had left (along with lots of other presents they left for her), her chair was hovering about a foot off the floor, and there were sticky notes all over her calendar.

Her assistant (who couldn’t be more than a couple of months out of Hogwarts) came bustling in. “Ms. Granger, the minister asked me to remind you of your meeting with the secretary for the Minister of Cyprus tomorrow, please be prepared, he’s a groper. You have a lunch meeting with your superior at noon, and we still need to arrange for a decent room for the Emperor of Japan.”

Hermione took a deep breath to steady her thoughts. Deciding to use a line from one of her favorite movies, she turned to the young girl and smiled. “I leave you alone for one weekend and look what happens, everything’s gone to pots.”

The muggleborn assistant recognized the line and smiled, understanding herself to be dismissed. After her door was closed, Hermione looked at the mess and reorganized her thoughts.

Ok, first things first, put that chair back on the ground. A quick finite incantatum was the best solution. The floating chair would be from Harry or Ron, their sour idea for a joke. She sat in the now level chair and looked around. Now what?

After hours of shuffling, reading, and cleaning up owl poop, Hermione laid her head on her desk for a moment. She had finished her speech for her meeting tomorrow, spoken with a muggle hotel she knew in town that had wizard management and owners to arrange for the Japanese Emperor to be put in their finest suite, and filed away a few correspondences as “reply to later”.

She knew she was forgetting something, but what? Her thoughts wandered to Draco and the wonderful day they shared. He had changed so much. He was sweet, charismatic, and charming. A far cry from the superior attitude he held in scho….

“OH MY GOODNESS!” She cried, looking at the time sphere on the wall. She completely forgot about the meeting with her boss. Geez, she was going to be late. A tongue lashing was coming, she could feel it brewing.

Hermione cringed as she entered the restaurant and saw her boss, Mr. Edwards, sitting impatiently at the table.

“Ms. Granger, you are late.” He said in his cool, level voice. “I’m sorry, sir. There were papers everywhere, a levitating chair,” she began as he held up his hand to silence her. “Sorry sir, there are no excuses.” She bowed her head. This was going to be a long day.

Draco was bored! He had been studying and researching all day for his final potions essay. He knew how important this was to his future, but for some reason he was at a brick wall and bored.

He began to scribble on the parchment. Hermione’s name, his name, a snake, a few odd shapes with no real purpose. He was thinking about Hermione, of course. Wondering what she was doing, and wishing he had kissed her.

Damn that weaselette. Hmm, he would have to start thinking of them as the Weasley’s now. He didn’t think Hermione would appreciate certain nicknames. Ugh, that meant he would need to be civil with Scarhead too. Draco blanched.

Oh well, if he wanted to continue to see Hermione, certain things would have to be put in the past. He was willing to at least make the effort.

His thoughts went to her wild hair. It had calmed since school, whether by product, magic, or nature he knew not. All he wanted to do with it was run his fingers through those curls. Would they go straight..he bet they would feel like silk.

He was daydreaming now and decided to give the essay up as a bad job for the day. He had to see her, he should have kissed her on Saturday, but he wussed out after the moment was interrupted.

It had started to rain. Draco heard the raindrops as he grabbed his cloak. He looked at the time and figured she would be getting off work about now. His mind made up and confidence firm, he spun in place, his mind on a certain chestnut haired maiden.

The pounding of the rain alerted him to his new location. It was really pouring hear. He hoped Hermione cast an impervious on herself before coming out, or at least had a thick cloak so she wouldn’t get soaked.

A lump formed in his throat as he began to wonder if she’d even see him before apparating out of there to drier turf. A strange noise brought him out of his thoughts. It sounded like someone was sick.

Looking around and using the talents he’d gained sneaking around Hogwarts for 7 years, he followed the sound to a big tree near the side of the main entrance to the ministry. His heart clenched as he saw Hermione sitting there, hugging her knees to herself, shivering, and crying her eyes out.

Taking off his cloak and transfiguring it into a makeshift lean-to, he sat on the ground and put his arm around her.

She jumped at the unexpected contact. Draco pulled her close and whispered, “shhh, Hermione. It’s ok. What happened?”

Hermione began to sniffle and wipe her face. “Oh, Draco. Everything happened today. I can’t do anything right by anyone today. I was so overwhelmed this morning that I was late to the meeting with my boss and he yelled at me.”

Draco just sat there, rubbing her back and comforting her the best he could. She kept going on about the horrible day she was having. He had to admit, the poor girl looked beat. He overheard something about a cruel joke from George Weasley and a floating chair? Then a thought occurred to him.

“Hermione, why are you out in the rain, why didn’t you go home after work to relax?” He felt her tense beside him. She began to wail. “I lost my wand, I was trying to unstuck my butt from the floating chair and I can’t remember what I did with it.”

Draco had to bite his lip to keep from laughing at the poor girl. She would certainly not appreciate it. So instead, he stood up and offered his hand to her. He returned his cloak to its original size and form and looked at her.

Reaching up to her hair, Draco pulled her wand from a messy bun near the nape of that regal neck. “Oh, thank you, Draco. You must think I’m pathetic.”

Giving her a simple smile, he pulled her into a tight embrace. “I could never think you’re pathetic, Hermione. You are the most beautiful, compassionate, intelligent witch I’ve ever known. You had a bad day, but I’m here. Now let’s go get you dried off, huh?” He wiped her cheek with his thumb.

“Draco?” She asked so quietly he almost didn’t hear her. “Do you really think I’m beautiful?” Draco chuckled and placed both hands on her waist. Looking her square in the eyes he told her.

“Well, you are a mess right now, but yes, you are still beautiful to me.” She gave a watery chuckle as they both mutually moved their heads closer together. Before she knew what was happening, his lips were on hers.

The kiss was slow and careful. His lips were so soft and he tasted of vanilla. Mmmm, she could kiss him all day. She lifted her hand and placed it on his back, the other hand came up to caress his face.

Pulling each other close, they let themselves get lost in the others taste and the feel of their lips. The fact that they were getting soaked seemed to be forgotten, for neither noticed that it was still raining.
