The Morning After
“Shit, shit, Molly wake up!” Harry sat up and looked at the sky with dismay. The eastern sky was streaked with pink and orange; it was much later than they had intended to stay out.
Molly opened her eyes sluggishly. “Wha--?” she muttered sleepily.
“It's morning,” Harry said, shaking her shoulder.
She looked at him blankly for a moment, uncomprehending. Suddenly, she gasped and sat up, knocking her head against Harry's. “Ow!” they both winced and pulled away. “We've got to get back,”she said desperately.
“Come on,” Harry said, grabbing her hand and half-pulling her towards the house. They walked quickly, almost running, until they were within sight of the house. They slowed and stopped at the edge of the garden.
“What are we going to say if someone's up?” Harry whispered.
Molly looked panicked for a moment. “I don't know.” Suddenly, her face brightened and she looked around at the garden. “Vegetables!” she cried.
“What?” Harry was confused.
“Quick, here's a basket.” Molly snatched an old, broken apple basket from where it lay next to the gate. “We were gathering vegetables for lunch. Come on.” Before she could lose her nerve, she jerked the gate open, marched inside, and began flinging vegetables at random into the basket. Harry joined her and within a few minutes, the basket was filled with a motley assortment of carrots, tomatoes, swedes, and cabbage. “Well,” said Molly when they'd finished, “we'd best be getting inside.” Harry nodded nervously and followed her in.
To their mutual relief, the kitchen was empty. Harry set the heavy basket on the table and sighed heavily. He was just about to comment on their good fortune when Ron stumbled into the room, rubbing his eyes sleepily. He looked up as he entered and noticed them.
“What're you two doing up so early?” he said, yawning.
“We were gathering vegetables,” Molly said with a cheery smile that, to Harry, seemed forced. “I have big plans for lunch today. Um, what are you doing up?”
“Hungry,” Ron mumbled, shuffling towards the pantry. “There any more of that cake from last night?”
“Look in the back, dear,” she said, smiling at Harry, relieved. “Next to last year's strawberry preserves.”
It was just that easy. No one had noticed their absence and the excitement of almost having been caught had given them both an adrenaline rush like none they had ever experienced. They became more relaxed over the next few weeks, taking advantage of every opportunity to sneak into the bathroom for a snog or enjoy a pre-dawn quickie in the pantry. They were confident that no one knew what was going on.
They were wrong.
