A Zen Moment

Author’s Notes:

* Hey guys the new chapter is out and the last one for the night. Again it seems a little slow but things will be picking up next chapter.

*It will also appear that there is a lot of things that just wont make sense. But I promise that everything will be explained in the next chapter.

Response to Reviewers:

Sisterae: It is excellent to see you are still with me. I am glad you like her fire. It is a little bit dampened in this chapter. But trust it will re-emerge with a vengeance.

LunaSnape: I was hoping people got the whole “Mmmm-Mmmm” thing. I racked my brain over some great candy slogan that hadn’t been taken and just couldn’t think of one.

Tricky Woo: Thank you for pointing out some of my mistakes. I really don’t mind. I mean how else can I correct them? I hope this chapter is a little better, and that the next will show and even more marked improvement. Thank you for taking the time to read my story!

Chapter 4: A Zen Moment

The two men stood looking down at the unconscious girl. Her body laying among the scattered books that had fallen from their shelves with the force of her impact.

“Oh Severus,” Albus lamented. “I don’t know whether to thank you or reprimand you.”

Severus was incredulous, he had just save the man from a bashing and he didn’t know how to respond? “Headmaster, surely you realize that I had no choice! She was threatening you with a stick.”

“A cane, it was a cane. She was more or less trying to ward me off. It seems I gave her quite a fright in my attempt to prove our existence. Well there is nothing for it now. I doubt she will awaken before the sorting ceremony.” Albus sighed, “Let us move her to the couch and call Madame Pomfrey. She can keep an eye on her and alert us when she wakes.”

Albus levitated the young woman’s body to the couch and applied a sticking charm to ensure she stayed in place.

“Perhaps it would be best if you stayed as well, Severus. There is no telling how she will react once she regains consciousness.”

“If that is what you would like me to do Albus.”

“It is.” Albus replied heading for the fire. “I will send Madame Pomfrey here immediately. It might be helpful to give the girl a calming draught, Severus. Something to help the girl relax.”

Severus offered a small bow and watched as the headmaster disappeared in a whoosh of green flame.

Severus Snape looked down at his patient with disgust. He didn’t understand how she had come to be there, or why the Headmaster hadn’t simply Oblivated her and sent her on her way. All he did know was that he was tired of being forced into the role of babysitter. It was bad enough he had to keep watch over the brat Harry Potter, but now he was saddle with some deranged muggle female. It was little more than a bloody waste of time.

Madame Pomfrey came through seconds later and immediately began to act the mother hen. Watching the woman cluck and fuss over the girl was nauseating. There was little more wrong with the woman than a bump on the head. She certainly didn’t warrant the amount of concern Madame Pomfrey seemed determined to lavish upon her.

“Well, she seems alright Severus. There are no major injuries, and aside from a headache she should be perfectly fine when she wakes-up.” Pomfrey put away her wand and gathered whatever tools and potions she had brought along. “There is nothing more that I can do for the girl. Do you really need me here? I hate to miss the sorting.”
Severus sighed and settled back into a nearby chair to wait. “That should be fine Pomfrey, if you would just leave me the calming draught. I’ll administer it as soon as she shows signs of stirring.”

Madame Pomfrey handed Severus the bottle and excitedly made her was to the hearth. And then she to was gone, leaving Severus alone with the woman unconscious on the couch.

‘She really is attractive,” Severus found himself thinking. This ‘Miss Lindsey’ was a small girl. Despite being of average height for a woman she couldn’t have weighed more than 100 lbs. She didn’t look overly thin, just extremely fragile.

Severus snorted, if the previous events were anything to go by, then this was by no means a shrinking violet. In her anger she had been magnificent. Her face, now pale, had been aflame. Her olive complexion had shimmered in her rage. Her lips were full, turning slightly down at the corners of her mouth. Her hair was a strange concoction of strips of silvery blond and deep auburn, and it was long. Sinfully so.

‘Yes, she really is attractive. To bad she is an untamable shrew.’

Maddie was dreaming. She swam in the deep warm waters of the ocean. The sky above was vast and unblemished. There was an island off in the distance, it’s beaches covered in sands of white. All around her the air hang heavy with humidity, a soft breeze the only relief.

Maddie laughed and played in the ocean. She dove and swam, played with the fishes and called to the birds. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so happy. But the joy was fleeting and all to soon the breeze turned into a wind. And the once azure skies began to cloud over with looming clouds of the deepest black. Maddie swam desperately for the island in an attempt to flee the storm. But the more she swam the further the island seemed to be. Maddie pushed herself to the point of exhaustion, to the point where her muscles screamed their agony, and still the island was no closer. And then she was being drug down.

She fought against the invisible hand that seemed to pull her down, further away from the sparkling surface. She could feel that air in her lungs turning stale and burning. She would have to take a breathe soon, she needed to breath. She couldn’t get away, everything was getting darker and darker, the surface ever retreating.

Then suddenly she couldn’t stop herself, she inhaled. The water tasted sweet as it invaded her mouth washing down her throat, pushing itself into her lungs. The sense of suffocation induced Maddie into a deeper panic and renewed her struggles. She fought desperately to get away, and amazingly the world began to brighten. Her head crested above the waves and Maddie was finally able to breathe. She sputtered with relief and opened her eyes. Only this was no troubled ocean she swam in. No, she was sitting on the couch again, staring into obsidian eyes.

“Easy now,” Severus soothed as he patted the coughing girls back. “Just breath.“ He had tried to slip her the potion while she was sleeping, closing her mouth and pinching her nose to insure she swallowed. But apparently he had miscalculated somewhat and the stubborn chit inhaled a good portion of the potion instead.

He watched her watery eyes as they darted back in forth, trying to take in and make sense of her surroundings. Her face was a fiery red, and her mouth a gaping hole that emitted the most disturbing hacks Severus had ever heard.

“Oh for God’s sake just cover your mouth!” Severus snapped disgusted by the struggling woman’s lack of manners.

Her eyes flashed to his, and in that instant he could see the recognization and panic flare to life.

“You..you..YOU SHOT ME!” She screamed fighting against Severus. “YOU SHOT ME WITH A STICK!”

“I most certainly did no such thing!”

“Yes you did! You fucking SHOT ME!”

Pushing her back onto the couch Severus used all of his weight and strength to secure her flailing limbs. But the action only seemed to incite her further and she doubled her resistance.

“Stop!” She screamed, he mouth next to his ear. “Fire! FIRE!”

“There is no fire you silly girl,” Severus said finally managing to wrangle her wrist down. “Just STOP!”

Still she struggled until either exhaustion or the potion finally kicked in and she ceased all movement. Her breathing began to regulate itself, and her heart rate dropped to a more normal speed. Severus pulled back and saw the glassy look take over her eyes.

‘Finally,’ he sighed and released the woman. She slowly sat up, looked around, and turned her sights on Severus

“Where am I? And why am I here?”

Maddie had never felt so relaxed in her life. Which was incredibly strange considering the overwhelming fear she had felt not seconds before. It wasn’t a groggy feeling like one would expect with pain medications. No, this felt more natural, as if her body had just heaved a great sigh of relief. She knew why she should be afraid. After all she had been kidnapped, assaulted, and shot, but she just didn’t feel the fear, the anxiety. Maddie just felt…good.

“What do you want with me?” She asked the cruel bastard sitting beside her. Her tone even and…well calm.

“I think those are questions best answered by the Headmaster. He will be here shortly” The man looked as though he didn’t trust her. It was kind of funny, because he had shot her, not the other way around. What was wrong with this guy…what a goofball.

“Okay…Wow, my head kinda hurts. I don’t suppose you have any aspirin on you?”

“No I do not…I will retrieve a pain potion for you as soon as the Headmaster arrives.”

“Okay.” And to Maddie’s mind that was that. He couldn’t tell her anything, and he couldn’t leave her so that left her with one thing to do. Chill out, look around, take stock of her environment, check out mega-bastard.

He wasn’t handsome, Maddie thought, but he had a certain quality that made him attractive. His nose was a bit large for his face, but it appeared so Romanesque. In deed his whole face looked like it had been fashioned after a roman statue.

She couldn’t tell whether he was tall or not, but he appeared to be skinny. Of course one was bound to look lean when they drenched themselves in black. Why, even his hair was black. It was longer than Maddie usually liked, at it appeared to be oily, but it did look soft. Like silk…silky smooth…kinda like his voice. Which could probably melt butter it was so hot.

‘What an odd looking hottie. He’s like a hot guy who really isn’t hot in a traditional sense, but in a new wave, tragic poet way…he was…hot.’ Maddie frowned at her musings. She really shouldn’t be thinking about her captive this way, but it just didn’t seem to matter that he was holding her hostage, or that he had shot her.

“What did you give me?”

“A calming draught.” Severus replied brusquely as move himself from the couch to the chair.

“Ooohhh…Anything else?”

“No.”

Silence reigned supreme for minutes more until finally the fireplace flared to life.

‘About bloody time.’ Severus thought as he shifted himself into a more comfortable position.

From there the once long hours seemed to fly by. Severus watched as Madelyn sat tranquilly and listened to everything the Headmaster had to say. Every so often she would nod or stop Albus to ask a question.

She listened to Albus’ explanation of barriers. The difference between muggles and wizards. She openly questioned how and entire civilization could remain hidden in today’s world. And through it all she remained level headed and inquisitive. Accepting the Headmaster’s apologies and offering her own.

Severus was stunned by her complete turn about. He had been expecting for her to remain calm so long as she was under the effects of the potion. But that time came and went and she hardly tensed a muscle. If anything she was open-minded yet critical. And in the end she only had one thing to say.

“Where do I sleep?”

Okay so that is that, and I am finally over with the bump that seemed to demand so much attention. I am hoping that things will be able to pick up now. Please just hang in there with me.
