FOUR: Not so Easy

Four: Not so Easy

The three wizards stood half a mile away from an impressive fortress of a castle. It sat on a sandy island on a lake and resembled a mountain with its irregular arrangement of towers and levels. The drawbridge over a murky moat barred all incomers and out goers.

“We’re not going to get in there.” Draco said, staring up at the imposing masonry.

“The locals said it was the vampire… residence.” Severus said.

“A nice piece of estate.” Lucius said, realising the castle was heading on for twice the size of Hogwarts.

“How many vampires live in there? Its huge!” Draco said, counting the number of towers and estimating the number of people who could live there.

“None, there have been no reported feedings – even animal feedings! A vampire can’t survive without blood!” Severus said.

“You’ve said that, repeatedly, but the locals said differently.” Lucius muttered, sick of his friend’s mantra.

“How are we going to get in?” Snape asked.

“It is simple, we Fly.” Lucius replied, enlarging his broom

“Well, that was easy, wasn’t it.” Draco said, ringing out the slimy water from his cape after a squid that dwarfed the one at Hogwarts dragged him from his broom and under the water.

“Oh yes! It was so simple dodging the arrows that were shot at us from motion-sensing unmanned crossbows!” Snape complained.

“And it was a piece of cake to open the drawbridge from the outside, especially as it is covered in anti-climb paint that makes it slippery!” Draco complained, showing his Father his hands covered in the black substances.

“And then there was the effortless task of climbing the poison ivy when the drawbridge wouldn’t open.” Snape growled.

“The straightforward dodging of the hot oil that was poured over us by the gargoyles.” Draco said.

“Enough! So it wasn’t particularly simple – but we achieved entrance!” Lucius snapped.

“Entrance to where?” Draco asked, looking around the room they had entered. It resembled a dormitory, ten bunks lined up regimentally down the two long walls, a small wardrobe and chest of drawers to the right side; identical bed coverings on each one, as neat and tidy as could possibly be.

“A dormitory?” Snape guessed.

“It’s a bit sparse for children – this isn’t Hogwarts.” Lucius commented.

“Barracks.” Draco whispered, his eyes wide.

“What?” Lucius said, turning to his son, not noticing the twenty men that ambled into the room.

“INTRUDERS!” Yelled one seven-foot tall man, his eyes shining green in the dusk light.

“RESTRAIN THEM!” Shouted another, the whole group moving as one to restrain the three men.

“Petrificus Totalus!” the wizards cried, only to have the hex blocked effortlessly by the wave of a few clawed hands and words spoken from mouths with gleaming fangs.

“They attacked! Contain them! Protect the city!” came an order from the first voice; then all went dark for the investigators.
