Chapter Three, pt.2
Harry was instantly put on guard when his name was used. How did they know me through my disguise?
The disguise in question had grown a bit in the last few months. In addition to the makeup over his scar, it now included a baseball cap that (which was a bit crushed seeing as how he had to stick it in his waistband most of the time so the Dursleys couldn’t see it) and a new, more stylish pair of glasses the twins had helped him acquire.
Harry followed the goblin silently down what appeared to be a deliberate maze of corridors created to confuse intruders. When Griphook finally came to a stop and knocked on a door, Harry mentally prepared himself for anything, not quite knowing what to expect on the other side of the door.
…
It was all a bit melodramatic really. The only thing on the other side of the door was a much older looking goblin sitting behind a humongous desk and what was unmistakably a Weasley in the corner.
“Hello, you must be Harry. I’m Bill. I think the twins told you about me?”
“Of course, why all the hubbub though?” Harry asked.
The older goblin finally spoke up, “Because, Mr. Potter, if what we suspect is true, the Laws of Gerngir have been violated.” Seeing Harry’s confused look, he elaborated, “Gerngir was the first Karer, or as you humans would call it “manager”, of Gringotts. He created a set of laws, which your ministry agreed to, to govern the Bank. We believe the most sacred, the very idea that is the cornerstone of Gringotts has been broken.”
“He paused to collect his thoughts before continuing, “You saw the saying at our entrance?” At Harry’s quick nod, he continued, “We hold very true to the fact that whatever anyone trusts us to protect, will be protected. When Mr. Weasley heard from his brothers that you didn’t even know your accounts existed, he knew something was wrong. You see, Mr. Potter, you’ve supposedly been allowing withdraws from your account for years. You have even, it seems, ordered the making of a thin card, sort of like a muggle credit card, be made and given to multiple persons. If, as you say, you did know of even the very existence of these accounts, then we have a problem. You see, I am the current Karer of Gringotts, and I do not want to be known for this.”
“I’d say we do sir. Right now, I’d like to know how you think this happened. I’ve observed your security measures for just a simple office, I want to know how they where breached.”
Selidor was internally impressed. Most humans passed off the maze of hallway as poor architectural skills, when in reality it was there most basic defense system. Yes, they had attempted thievery before, but many did not get past the corridors without getting hopelessly lost. He was impressed that even one as young as Potter, no matter what race, should discern this with a hasty passage on the shortest rout possible. Selidor then looked to Griphook, disgusted with him for the shame he brought upon their people, and waved him forward.
“It was I, I was your Kouncilor. Only recently have I become alarmed. I am deeply sorry for my shame.”
Even more confused, Harry turned to Bill, hoping he would use terms he actually understood.
“You see Harry, the goblins believe that your money is your money, as I’m sure you’ve gathered. What hey haven’t said is that that means something different in the Wizarding world. I believe in the muggle world, you wouldn’t have any control over any inheritance you may receive until the age of 18, sometimes even 21?” Pausing o wait for a nod from Harry, he had to hide the small smile that threatened at the outrageous looks on the goblin’s faces, “Well that’s not how it works here. You have complete control over any inheritance from the moment you receive it. The only concession that was made, after some 2-year-old spent all his money on candy and sweets, was to put in the Kouncilor System. If anyone under the age of 10 is in control of any amount of money, they are assigned a Kounselor. Their Kounselor has the power of veto until the Kharge reaches the age of 3, after that, he becomes a financial advisor of sorts, who only has the power to suggest something is a bad idea, but the Kharge has the final say. It is a sacred bond to the goblins, because of the high regard they have for possession. It ends when the kid urns 10, but depending on the length of the relationship, most stay in contact with their Kouncilor, as was the case with my grandfather. But, as to how it is Griphook’s fault, well your Kouncilor is the one who deals with the inner workings of your account. They’re the ones who do withdraw and spendature notes from your account.”
Throughout Bill’s explanation, Harry had watched as Griphook looked more and more miserable, almost seeming as if he felt he was going to be sent to the gallows. “So, Griphook, who convinced you I was the one giving those orders?” Harry watched as a look of hope slowly crept along the goblins face.
“You do not judge me immediately? I thank you for your mercy great one. I am afraid you would not believe me though.”
“I don’t know about that, I think I have it pretty much figured out. It was Dumbledore wasn’t it?” Harry continued after his disbelieving nod, “I really need to know why everyone thinks he’s an infallible god; I haven’t been really impressed so far. Let me also guess that one of those credit cards have things have been made for at leas one person named Dursley.”
“How did you know master? I thought no one would believe my story?”
“He seems to be the root of most of my problems lately,” Harry turned back to the Karer and added, “I suspect you have something to add sir?”
“Yes, I have failed you also. I am the one who allowed Griphook to take orders from Master Dumbledore. You see, no one has ever been allowed to come between the Bond, but Master Dumbledore convinced me that you were in hiding and that for your safety, communication was to go only through him. I will start the proceedings to have us stripped of our positions and charges to be brought against those who have stolen from you.” The older goblin sighed as he stood up to leave, “Wait.”
He turned around to see the most devious of smiles flash across the boy’s face, “I have a plan.”
