The Benefits of Being Unappreciated

Chapter 1: The Benefits of Being Unappreciated

Breakfast sat fragrant and delicious on the quaint eating table within the Malfoy Gardens.

“It’s really nice here.”

Draco and Lucius raised their eyebrows in amusement while Harry just blushed lightly and placed more food on his plate. They’d never considered that he’d be so terribly enamored with their home. Many thought Malfoy Manor was exquisitely built and protected; however, they never had quite the wide-eyed reaction their guest seemed to experience.

“Tell me, Harry. Haven’t you ever seen the Potter manor?”

“Potter Manor…?”

Father and son both stared at each other in shock at the confused expression on Harry’s face. The boy was to inherit the building and he didn’t even know it existed? Muggle World or no, the boy should’ve still seen the house that was going to belong to him in little more than a week. By Draco’s 11th birthday, Lucius had shown his son every square inch of the manor – letting him know what he would be getting in the future so that he could decide on any changes that he wanted. Any rooms to be repainted or redecorated was thought out and planned by the heir – and if existing – betrothed. Since Lucius didn’t want a betrothed for his son – thinking the idea was completely ridiculous – Draco himself decided that he likes the manor as it is and doesn’t really plan on changing anything. Perhaps when he gets married, he will change his mind to suit his spouse’s interest, however until then, everything stays the same. Honestly, such decisions should be made early.

“Yes, Harry. The manor. The one you’re going to inherit in less than a week. You do know what I’m talking about, yes?”

“Um…”

Harry suddenly felt very awkward and very confused. He didn’t know anything about a manor he was to inherit. All he knew about was the money in his bank. The-boy-who-lived had no idea that there was anything…well…more.

“Harry, who is your magical guardian?”

“I don’t know…I would assume Dumbledore since he was the one to give me the key to my vaults.”

Draco sputtered out his orange juice and laughed in amusement – clearly not seeing that Harry was serious until Harry himself didn’t join in the laughter.

“Oh. You can’t be serious. You are? That impossible, Harry. Dumbledore can’t be your magical guardian.”

“Why not?”

“Because he wasn’t assigned as such. For him to be your magical guardian, it should be in a legal document in which your parents have signed it. Do you not have any family friends perhaps?”

“Well…There was my godfather and Remus.”

“Remus Lupin? Well since your godfather is not here to fill in as your magical guardian, it should have been Lupin to take over. Dumbledore can’t do squat to control anything you do.”

“So…Then why did he have my vault key?”

“Lupin must have given it to him or something of the sort, because nothing else short of stealing would have given him that key.”

“Well…That or forgery that is. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t have been denied seeing your property. Your birthday is in less than a week, and you don’t know exactly what you’re getting.”

“Well I’ve been in the muggle world during the summers.”

“Muggle world or not, you should’ve been taken. It’s a huge offense. Practically illegal. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say…”

Just then, an owl swooped in, and handed Lucius and Draco each their own Daily Prophet editions before flying off and away.

“Well isn’t this interesting?”

Vast Wealth on the Loose

Attention faithful readers. It was this morning, that a bounty hunt was brought to our attention. Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (Hogwarts Headmaster) has announced an outstanding reward for finding the illusive and traitorous boy-who-lived! Now as I am sure this has certainly piqued your interest, I’m sure you’re all waiting for the reward. For the person who locates, captures, and brings the boy who lived to the Hogwarts headmaster a reward of an outstanding 200 BILLION GALLEONS! Yes, readers! As cruel a joke this may seem, I assure you this is 100 percent true! For the boy-who-lived, a quarter of the entire Potter fortune will be handed over. In addition, for finding the boy-who-lived BEFORE the 31st of this month, you will also be awarded 3 of his manors!

“3 MANORS!?”

Yes, people. Three manors! I’m sure you are as shocked as I am by the hefty price on the ex-Gryffindor-golden-boy’s head, but we do not lie. This only goes to show what we will give to have the dangerous criminal within our clutches and thrown in Azkaban.

My faithful Readers…Don’t let him escape! He has betrayed us all, and now…He must reap the benefits.

Harry stared cautiously at the gaping expressions on both their faces in worry. They were reading the Prophet and since he didn’t have an edition of his own, he didn’t know what was causing their surprised and careful looks in his direction.

“What’s going on?”

“Um…Harry…I don’t suggest you step outside the manor walls anymore. In fact, I think we should go back inside.”

“That’s right. Come along, Harry.”

“No! What’s going on? I saw the look on your faces. Don’t think I didn’t. If it’s about me, I want to know. Now.”

“Yes. We will tell you, but we should most likely get inside first. Outside, we stand the chance of being bombarded by wizards all over the England Wizarding Region. To top it all off, aurors will be searching every house. Light or Dark, there will be NO discrimination. Now I suggest we get inside quickly, and lock the doors.”

Draco grabbed Harry’s hand and dragged his willing companion back into the manor in which the closed and locked all the windows. House elves were ordered to no longer open the door and all floo connections were immediately disconnected. They wouldn’t even receive letters any longer, because they didn’t want any automatic portkeys slipping through the cracks.

“Alright. Can I know what’s going on now?”

“Certainly. A treasure hunt, if you will, has just been issued.”

“Treasure hunt?”

“Oh yes. A treasure hunt indeed. I am sure you’ve read or heard of stories about labyrinths? There’s no map to guide, so people run around frantic like chickens with their heads cut off, trying to find the exit, or in this case, the treasure.”

“Yes…”

“That’s what’s just been announced by your dear headmaster. At the end of this labyrinth, there are 2 exits. One has 200 billion galleon and three manors…Another just has 200 billion galleon. If you don’t find the first exit before the 31st, it closes itself off and you’ve lost your chance. You can only hope to find the other one before someone else does.”

“Okay. So what does this have to do with us?”

“Plenty, Harry. Especially since in front of both exits, is you

A/N:

DUN DUN DUUUUUUN DUN.

Oh my goodness! What’s this new development? Here we thought things were looking up and suddenly THIS happens.

Muse: *Malevolent finger tapping* Bwuahahahahaaaa…

Will Harry have to meet the dark lord earlier than he’d scheduled? No one knows…Well my muse knows, but she’s being evil right now and refusing to tell me any of her wicked sinister plots. *sigh* Therefore, I suppose you’ll have to hold onto your seats and wait till the next chapter. ^_^ *Secretly laughs at the torture while smiling innocently.*

Have a nice evening, and don’t forget to drop in a review! ^_^
