Chapter Five
Having finally made it to the Potions Master’s office, it belatedly occurred to him that is was unlikely that that man would be there this early. He knocked anyway and was relieved to hear the man tell him to enter. “Harry. I was going to come see you after breakfast.”
There was nothing that could have prevented the smirk that resulted from the thought of the the Snarky Git wanting to actually see the boy who lived. He suppressed his thoughts with an effort. “I am sorry sir, I just need some details about this world and I must admit that I didn’t want to wait.” Thinking about his motives, he admitted, “Honestly I wanted them from you, I don’t want the propaganda from the headmaster. I loved the man, but he was far from honest with me.”
Snape’s Lips quirked in what was almost a smile. “True enough. When we are alone, please call me Severus. I know that you are not my Harry, but I can already tell that you are someone I would like. Now, tell me what specifically you want to know.”
Gathering his thoughts carefully, Harry thought about what he needed to know. “ When did you take me away from my relatives, and why would you bother given your hatred of my father?”
“You were four. Albus was gone to a ministry function when Arabella Tried to make he biannual report on you. I convinced her to tell me and I would pass the information on” Snape smirked a bit at whatever he was remembering. “She was somewhat reluctant to give me the information, but given that her floo was only connected twice a year she finally relented. She admitted that she had only seen you once in the last six months and you appeared to have many bruises.
A look of pure hatred crossed the man’s face before he continued. “ When I arrived at your mother’s relatives house that whale of a man tried to keep me out. I stunned that beast and found you locked in a cupboard. You were so small and you just looked at me so impassively, like I might do anything to you, and you would have no defence. There was no hope in your eyes, but there was no defeat either. It was like you had no expectations at all.”
There was a long pause, Harry wanted to prompt that man to continue but he knew this was an important and painful memory so he simply waited while the man gathered himself.
“I told you to gather all your things so we could leave. You didn’t blink and eye, you picked up the blanket that you were sitting on and a pair of too large sleep pants, to go with the too large clothes that you were already wearing and followed. I inwardly wanted to believe that you must have something else, but given what I had already seen , I quickly believed. My Lily’s only son had been left with people who hated him, and abused him, and couldn’t understand anything about him. You wanted to know why I would rescue, James Potter’s son, you were a tiny abused child of the woman that I loved. Even I am not so small that I could hate a four year old that was clearly abused. I took you back here and gave you nutritional potions to reverse the malnutrition that you had suffered. and you have lived with me since.”
Harry now understood his height. He felt a great deal of gratitude to this man. He wished it had happened for him, but he still knew that it could have. He knew this was difficult for the man in question, talking to this imposter that had somehow taken away the closest thing to a son that he had, but he had to know the rest, and there was no one else to ask.
“Severus, what kind of person am I in this world?” He could see the man frown and hurried on. “I mean that it looks like I have slept with half the school, and I just can’t see Neville Longbottom attacking someone unprovoked.”
Severus looked a bit surprised at the last bit, but he clearly decided to respond. “You are physically and magically very powerful, but you are no bully. If anything you tend to protect the weak. You don’t pick fights, but you don’t shy away from them either.” Harry could hear the pride in that simple statement.
“You have tried with some success to see the best in all the houses. Your biggest liability is your friends. Draco, for example tries to be what you want him to be, and you have made him a much better person, but he was raised to be an arrogant pure blood. His mouth gets him, and by extension you into trouble. You seem to love all your friends to the point of blindness, but you always try to prevent it from getting physical. Sometimes you can’t.” He paused in his narrative to consider something, “I am not sure why you think so highly of Longbottom, but I can assure you in that he his more that capable of attacking someone, and you are not the first Slytherin to see it.”
“As far as you sleeping with half of the school, well yes you probably have, but that doesn’t make you a bad person. The other half of the school wished you would make it the whole. You are not a person who uses people, at least not intentionally. I am not sure that you know your own appeal. You have broken hearts, but I don’t think that you knew that. In spite of all I can give you, I don’t think that you believe yourself to be lovable, so you don’t think that others could see you that way.”
Harry could see that the man was sincere, but he hadn’t seen the way Draco was acting. “Draco, seemed really upset that I don’t have a relationship with him. He was really jealous of Blaise and Pansy when they hit on me on my way here, and he cried when we talked about it. ”
Snape stared at him a moment. “I can guarantee that Draco never cried in front of the other Harry. I have seen how he feels about you, but I know that he has never made it clear to you before. He must be able to tell something is different.”
Harry considered this, and realized it was possible. He had seen the change in demeanor the boy had undergone when he thought that he had been confunded. Maybe the Harry of this world wasn’t a purposely hateful person, maybe he was just a bit unobservant. “What side of the war is Malfoy on?”
“Your side of course. I don’t think you understand the lengths that boy would go to for you. He would follow you to Hell if he had to.”
“Then I need to tell him the truth. I don’t want to lead anyone else to Hell.” Harry couldn’t help but think of Sirius and the ministry.
Snape seemed to agree. “I will send him to you here. You know that Albus will want to see you again this morning?”
Harry nodded and watched the man leave to get Draco. This was going to be a rough day.
