Chapter Five

Alright, so this chapter didn’t really change at all. I think there were only a few things that I had to switch around a bit. Nothing major though. Hope you enjoy it and as always constructive criticism is nice.

Chapter Five

Hermione ambled downstairs and into her den. She had only just gotten home and gotten dressed when she remembered she was going to send Malfoy a letter. Calling a soft greeting to her owl, she sat down at her small desk and pulled out a quill and some parchment. She didn’t know what she was going to write. How could she simply write to somebody and explain that they had an unborn child somewhere in the world and that she was going to keep it no matter what? She stared down at her piece of parchment for a long time and then began to put her thoughts in writing.

Draco Malfoy,

I am writing in regards to something that you may or may not care about. I have only just been informed yesterday that because of what had happened on May the twenty-third, I’m pregnant and the child I am carrying is no doubt yours. I do plan on keeping it; in case you're wondering. I’m not writing this letter because I want something from you, I am only writing because it seemed like the human thing to do. If you aren’t willing to accept the fact that this baby is yours that is alright with me. I don’t expect you to take part in this baby’s life and quite frankly I’d rather have a go at it alone.

Hermione Granger

Hermione decided to keep the message to Draco short and sweet. She didn’t really have much to say to him, and she didn’t feel like writing anymore. Giving her letter to Faith, she watched as the owl flew off into the distance, hoping she hadn’t made a bad choice.

Blaise Zabini sat at the study table glancing at his good friend while Draco sat reading something in a book. Blaise would never have thought anything about it except that his blond haired friend had been on the same page for half an hour. He had also noticed that during his stay at Malfoy Manor, Draco has been more irritable than usual. There was definitely something wrong with his friend and Blaise wanted to know just what that was. He snapped his own book shut and Draco jumped slightly from the unexpected noise.

“Something wrong, Draco?” Blaise tried to sound indifferent when he asked the question, but the corners of his mouth twitched ever so slightly.

“No, why do you ask?” Draco asked, crankily looking up from his own book to stare questioningly at his dark skinned friend.

“Oh nothing, you’ve just been acting...odd...for the past few days. I mean, I've been watching your actions, and they are rather unusual compared to the normal Draco Malfoy attitude that you throw around. I was curious about what it was that was eating at you.” He flashed his friend a well deserved smirk.

“It’s really none of your business what’s going on with me and you’d do well to say out of my affairs, Zabini.” Draco dropped his silver eyes back to the book making a definite end to the conversation.

“Well then, if you’re not willing to talk about it that's your choice.” Blaise looked out one of the manor windows.

“Do you know what it is that annoys me the most?” Draco questioned bringing his eyes back up to stare at his friend.

Blaise shook his head still looking out of the window. He had been friends with Draco long enough to know that he would crack eventually and tell him what was really going on. Even if he acted as if he didn’t want people prying into his business, he needed somebody to vent to.

“I’m irritated with something that happened at the end of the school year. There was this girl I was with and her actions were enough to vex me.”

“Ah, girl problems, and who was the little lass?” Blaise looked over at Draco with a raised eyebrow.

“Just a girl, Blaise,” Draco said defensively and continued, “I was showing this girl a good time and everything was alright, not the best I’d ever had, but it was still good. After it was over, she just told me to get off her and then she stormed out as if she never wanted it to happen.”

“Well I think this “girl” wouldn’t have let anything happen between the two of you if she didn’t like you to begin with. Maybe you just didn’t perform well enough for her,” The dark boy stated darkly with a sneer.

“I’ve never had anybody complain before, quite the opposite really. I hadn’t really thought about if she liked me or not, I just know that there was an attraction. I wanted her at the time but that doesn’t mean that I want her now or ever again.” Draco commented curtly. He had wanted Granger at the time, but he didn’t want her now. Blaise had to be wrong about his inquiry.

“You mean you didn’t like her?” Blaise smirked with a snort.

“It wasn’t anything more than a brief attraction, a one night stand, and that sort of thing happens with me all the time. What bothers me the most is that she was clearly enjoying it while we were together and then she acted as if she hadn’t. Most girls can’t quit telling me how good I am in the sack and this girl treated me as if I were the scum of the Earth.” Draco said rather angrily.

“Draco, there’s an owl outside the window.” Blaise said pointing at an owl that was hovering outside the window. Draco rose from his chair and popped the window open. Thankfully, Faith landed on the windowsill and stuck her foot out. She had been waiting in the trees near the manor since the middle of the night watching out for the boy that she was there for. The blond haired boy took the letter from the creature and shooed the owl back out. Faith snapped at him angrily at his hands and took a rapid flight.

Draco popped open the unfamiliar wax seal and unrolled the parchment. There was relatively neat writing scrawled across the paper that he didn’t recognize. His eyes scanned the paper quickly. He stared at the paper in shock and then outrage. He read it over it another three times to see if he had just read the writing wrong. On the fourth time around he was positive that he was reading it correctly. Something must have shown on his face because Blaise spoke to him from beside the table.

“What’s the matter now?” Blaise asked.

“Nothing, I…I’ll be right back, Blaise.” Draco walked from the room and hurried down the hallway. How could this even be possible? He’d only been with Granger once, there had to be something else to this story, surely she couldn’t be pregnant from him.

He slipped into one of the unused rooms down the long corridor of the manor and sat down heavily in a black leather chair. Draco closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on the night he had been with Granger. When he at taken her on his bed he hadn’t felt as if she were a virgin. Would he have been able to tell the difference anyways? He had always slept with girls that had been tampered with before. Was there much of a difference? She would have never given him her virginity willingly. She had probably already lost that to the Weasel and now she was trying to pin him with their accident.

At the time she had been more than willing to bed him. She hadn’t really fought against it because she had wanted it just as much as he had. He hadn’t used any protection because everything had moved along so frantically, but could she have really gotten pregnant from one romp with him? Draco doubted very strongly that it was even possible for something of the sort to happen. Granger probably wanted to blame him for her unfortunate pregnancy because he had money that she could use to take care of her brat. She’d almost certainly figured that if she said she didn’t want him involved, it would be a challenge to him. He wasn’t up for that sort of challenge and he wouldn’t go for the bait. He wasn’t going to get trapped into something that he wasn’t directly responsible for.

He tossed the letter on the nearby table and stared up at the dark walls. Even if the child was his, and he knew it wasn’t, he’d rather not have anything to do with it. Granger was one person he didn’t want anything to do with and a half blooded little horror wouldn’t make the situation any better. He couldn’t be the father to something that was part muggle, his family would be disgraced even more than it already was and he wasn’t willing to sink that low. Not at all! Granger would either realize that the baby wasn’t his and she’d turn to the real father or she WAS going to raise that baby alone.

With her rotten luck she’d probably gotten pregnant by Weaselby. Draco almost laughed out loud when he thought about Weasley being the father. That was all that that family needed, they were poorer than dirt and Granger would realize that Weasel wasn’t Mister Right after all.

He shook his head in disgust, the wizarding world didn’t need anymore half blood snots running around. There were already so few families with pure bloodlines, it wouldn’t be long before they were gone completely. He would not participate in that event ever actually happening. He didn’t want to be responsible for his own family’s bloodline being ruined. He was the only child of the family! Panic set in and he felt his stomach drop; what if the baby were his? How his family would react Draco didn’t know, but he was guessing that it wouldn’t be pretty. They’d probably tell him to ignore the whole situation and that wasn’t a problem for him. He’d have nothing to do with it as is.

Draco sighed, completely forgetting about the letter, and left the room. If he were gone too long Blaise would come looking for him.

Ephah scurried from the darkness and snatched the paper from the table. He had been watching the young master of the house from the secret passage that ran past the dark room. Looking around with big dark eyes, he checked to see that there wasn’t anybody else in the room watching him. Sneaking back from where he had come from, he ducked into a hidden passageway and scuttled towards the Mistress' rooms. Though the house was large, it didn’t take the little house elf every long to find himself within her dark quarters.

Ephah walked into the room, peering around the door first, and looked around for his mistress. Hearing a slight splash from the lavatory, he scurried into the room and called out to Narcissa Malfoy.

“Oh, what is it Ephah, what have you for me this morning?” Narcissa sat in a bathtub full of hot water and bubbles that hid her body from view. Her back was leaning against the back edge of the tub and her hands were thrown lazily over the sides.

“Mistress, Ephah has found something of young master’s.” He squeaked at his mistress, stepping closer to hand the parchment to her.

She plucked the parchment from his grubby little hands and unrolled it. Her pale eyes inspected it curiously. Her face fell as she read the second sentence of the small paragraph. Quickly reading what it said, she tossed it aside and glared at the little house else still standing beside the tub.

“Mistress is mad at Ephah?” He yelped and started backing away from her, wringing his little hands as he did so.

“I’m not angry with you, Ephah. Where did you find this?” She looked at him with piercing blue eyes.

“I found it on a table where young master had thrown it.” He piped more cheerfully.

“Where is “young master” now?” Narcissa questioned.

“He is with his young friend in the reading room.”

“Leave now, I must speak with Draco instantly. You’ve done well, Ephah.” She stood in the tub, water trailing down her body, and watched the little creature dart from the room. She reached for a plush white towel and quickly went into her chambers. Hurrying, she dressed herself in flowing black robes and set herself to the task of finding her troublesome child.

It didn’t take long as she knew he was in the library, his favorite room of the house. She bustled into the well lit room. She stalked up to her son and tapped him on the shoulder. “Draco, a word.”

He looked up at her as if she were an irritating bug and turned back to the book at hand. “Whatever you’ve to say, you can say before my friends.”

“I think not, Draco.” She insisted brusquely. Her eyes darted to the other boy and back to her son. He was pretending as is he hadn’t heard her. She looked down her nose at the top of her son’s pale head.

“Just tell me, Mother.”

Narcissa tossed the rolled paper onto the table before him, she was fuming mad at her nit wit of a son. “How could you, Draco Malfoy?”

Draco gulped audibly and glanced quickly at his mother’s furious face. She stared at him coldly, waiting for an answer. When he remained silent she went on, “How could you possibly stand the touch of the filthy little mudblood, let alone think about sleeping around with her? Do you know what this could do to the reputation of our family?”

“I…you…” He barely got two words out and she was screaming at him again.

“You’ve made one of the biggest mistakes of your young adult life! Not only that, you’ve jeopardized the status of our family. If anybody of our class or family were to find out about this we would be ruined. Have you any idea of what your father would say? What he would do to you for this? I cannot believe it, Draco! How could you?” Her hand was on a slim hip and she was pointing a thin, boney finger into his face.

Blaise sat across the table, eyes wide, staring at the scene playing out before him. He had no idea about what was going on except that Draco had slept with a muggleborn girl and Mrs. Malfoy was very angry about it.

“I don’t know, Mother, it wasn’t intentional!” Draco whined at her.

“Not intentional!! You’ve had sexual intercourse with the most foul little snit you could find and it wasn’t intentional? How exactly did it happen then, Draco?” She glared at him with her brow raised questioningly.

“I mean that it wasn’t supposed to happen but it just DID.” He explained quickly.

“It just did, that’s all that you’ve got? Did you know that our laws could force you to marry her now that she’s pregnant? That you should do the rightful thing and make her, a mudblood whore, an honest woman?” Narcissa asked angrily.

“I doubt that it’s mine, Mother, I was only with her once.” Draco insisted trying to lessen the barbed remarks that were flying at him.

“It only takes one time you little idiot! She seemed rather insistent that this child is yours.” Her nostrils flare with anger as she spoke.

“I…I…don’t know.” He bowed his head and looked at the table.

“You’ve got to fix this, Draco Malfoy! There is no way of weaseling out of this mess this time. You’re to owl Hermione Granger and tell her that she’ll abort this thing. She’s not to keep it, do you understand me? If that doesn’t seem to be working, you’ll go speak with her in person and insist that she gets rid of this abomination.” At the horror-struck look on his face she said, “It’s either that or you’re to take responsibility of the situation and do the right thing. No Malfoy or Black has ever done something so disgraceful in all my life! If you are going to cut the cake, you’re going to eat it too, and that is the end of this discussion.”

“But, Mother, I can’t force her do something she doesn’t want to. She said she’s keeping it.” Draco persisted getting to his feet.

“Take care of it, Draco, or you’re really going to be taking care of it later!” Narcissa gave him a very stern face that told him that she wasn’t playing with him. He’d have to get into contact with Granger and straighten this out or else. Or else what? Draco asked himself angrily.

“Fine.” He said quietly and watched his mother stalk from the room.

“Draco, I knew you had it bad when it comes to the ladies, but Hermione Granger? One of the golden trio? And what’s worse is you’re going to be a daddy.” Blaise said with a wicked grin on his face. Though he was against mudbloods, he wasn’t against shagging them.

“Shut up, Zabini.” Draco said, angrily glaring at him.
