Day 2

DAY 2

I was braver today. I have nothing wrong spending a day reading and studying, but I don’t like burying a nose in one’s book just to avoid the issues that are staring one in the face. I wasn’t going to spend another day with Severus and I retreating behind pages, trying to ignore the fact that I was spending my holiday in a fugitive Death Eater’s hideaway with the intent to have sex with him. I wasn’t going to ignore the white Griffith in the room and pretend like Severus wasn’t a wanted man or that he hadn’t killed Albus Dumbledore. Regardless of the fact that Severus has been honorable in wanting to move slowly with me each night, he has the blackest of marks on his record. The longer I spend with this contradictory man, the more I have realized that I cannot be satisfied with diving in so deep without first looking where I am leaping.

After lunch, Severus bunkered down with an ancient potions treatise in Latin. I think he selected reading material in a foreign language mainly as a distraction. The more concentration he needed for translation, the less he had to give to the fact that I was still in his house.

It simply wasn’t healthy. I couldn’t stand it anymore.

“Why are you here?” I asked at last.

“I live here,” he grunted, without even looking up from his book.

“I mean, why didn’t you stay at Hogwarts?”

“No one stays at Hogwarts over the summer,” he said, now giving me a bored look.

“Then you’re coming back next term?” I asked, a little surprised to find myself hoping that he would answer in the affirmative.

“Last I heard,” he sneered, “there isn’t going to be a next term.” A bit more opaquely, he added, “Hogwarts isn’t safe.”

Damn him for dancing around my questions. “But why?” I pleaded, charging that ‘why’ with a thousand different questions.

“For such a well-read young woman,” he coolly countered, “you show yourself lacking in current events. Read the Daily Prophet.”

“I don’t need to read the Prophet.”

“Then aren’t you the well-informed witch? Obviously you don’t need to ask such inane questions then.”

“My questions are not inane,” I answered indignantly. “And they’re not the sort that an old rag like the Prophet could even start to answer. I want to know why you killed Dumbledore.”

He glared at me with venomous eyes, slammed his book, then stalked over to my chair to tower over me like he did when I was his student. “I have a new rule, Miss Granger.”

“What’s that, Severus?” I asked defiantly.

“No more questions.” Then he grabbed his cloak and slammed the front door behind him.

AN: Just a few more hours until we get to find out what really happened with SS and AD, though that sadly means this story will soon be going AU.
