Waiting

When Draco arrived at the great hall for dinner, he had immediately noticed that Hermione wasn’t there. In all, only six people were there and luckily for him they were all professors.

“Hello again Mr. Malfoy,” Dumbledore called from across the room. “Why don’t you come up here and eat with us. I’m sure Severus wouldn’t mind if you sat next to him.”

At this Professor Snape gave Dumbledore a cold looked, but nonetheless answered “Of course not.”

Having no choice, Draco sat next to the Potion Master.

After a couple minutes of silence between the two, Professor Snape finally broke it.

“Where is the know-it-all at, Boy?” he asked out of no where.

Being a spy for the order, Snape had heard of the Granger’s attack from the other death eater’s, but unfortunately it had been too late. Before he got back to Albus, the deed had been done. In hopes of taking away part of the guilt, he decided to pay a little more attention to Hermione and help her when she needed it.

“Um, she and I had a nasty row sir,” Draco said very cautiously. ‘Why would Snape care about Granger.’

Draco knew that by admitting this to a teacher, he may get his title revoked. Only one hour together and they were already fighting.

“Hmm, I see.” Sensing that Hermione was in no real danger, Snape resumed eating.

When Hermione did walk in, Draco was already half way through his meal and Snape had already left.
Immediately he noticed she had been crying.

“Hello Ms. Granger,” Dumbledore said once again.

“Hello Professor,” Hermione answered. “I’m sorry I’m late. I guess I lost track of time.”

Dumbledore could see right through Hermione’s lie, but didn’t push it.

“In that in case, why don’t you have a seat next to Mr. Malfoy and begin your new relationship.”

Hermione tensed before she nodded and made her way down the table.

‘What am I going to say to him,’ she thought.

Before she had come to dinner, Hermione had done a lot of thinking about Malfoy’s actions.

‘He did try to be nice, I suppose. But then he had to ruin it all by almost calling her a mudblood.’

Here she paused. He did try to stop himself before saying that word. And it’s not like he said it out of no where. Malfoy said it in response to what she said.

Then she stumped herself. ‘How could I expect him to understand how I feel about the last six years if she doesn’t understand how he felt?’

It was true. Malfoy for once was trying to be the bigger person and look past his beliefs just to get a long with her. How could she expect him to let go of everything he believed in for his entire life, just like that?

When Hermione finally reached her seat, she just sat down and didn’t even look at Draco. Draco did the same. Last time he had tried to start a conversation; he got his head bitten off. Now it was just a game of waiting. Both new one thing for sure, at some point during this dinner, they were both going to have to talk.
