The Drawing
“So what’s this I heard about you kissing Hermione?” Fred demanded of his twin.
“Where did you hear that?”
“Oh come on, mate, little baby Ronny is whining to everyone who will listen about how you were snogging her in the stairwell and that this family needed to leave his friends alone. Fred grinned at his twin. Even though George had never admitted it out loud, he was well aware of his brother’s feelings for Hermione. He thought it was about time that his twin did something about it.
“It was an accident.” George said turning red.
“You kiss the woman that you have loved for years, and it was an accident?” Fred shook his head at his brother. Man he could be weird sometimes!
“Who said that I have loved her for years?” George demanded. He thought that he had done a pretty good job of keeping his feelings hidden.
“George, George, George,” he said shaking his head. “When have you even been able to keep a secret from me?”
“I should have known that you would figure it out.”
“Don’t worry, bro, your secret is safe with me.”
“I know it is,” he said grabbing his brother in a headlock and yanking him down to the floor. “I would curse you seven ways to Sunday if you said a word, and the only person who knows as many evil hexes as you, is me!”
The two brothers laughed as they rolled around on the living room floor. They hadn’t spent a lot of time together lately and it felt good to renew their bond in this way.
“What are you to doing?” demanded Molly as she watched her twins roll around the floor and crash into the furniture like a couple of wrestling dogs.
Both boys stopped what they were doing and smiled sheepishly at their mother.
“Well get up the lot of you, you still need to go down to the Ministry this morning.” She said smiling fondly at her twins. Of all of her children, they had given her the most trouble and gray hair, but they had also given her the most laughter. You couldn’t help but smile when you were in a room with them.
George looked at Fred, “You ready to go ruin your life with another Ministry decree?”
“Hell, why not. Its not like I had anything better to do.”
“So how was your first night as a married woman?” Hermione asked with raised eyebrows to her best friend.
Ginny giggled. “It was incredible. I love Harry so much, and I know that he loves me. I can feel it in his every touch and his every look.”
“You guys are lucky to have found these feelings with each other. Its nice to know that after all that Harry has been through, his life will finally be peaceful, well as peaceful as it can get being married to a Weasley!” she laughed.
“Hey!” Ginny laughed. She knew how volatile her whole family could be. “Honestly, I think that is what Harry loves the most about me. He knows that I don’t have it in me to hold back. I would never be able to keep secrets from him.”
“You might be right about that.”
“I feel bad for you about this marriage law though. You could wind up spending your life with anyone. I wish that you could have found the happiness that I did.”
Hermione sighed. “I would have loved to fallen in love with a wizard and married him for love, but I suppose it’s not practical now. I hope that whoever I end up with, that I can learn to love him. It’s not like I was seeing anyone right now, or madly in love with someone and this law would tear it apart.” She briefly thought about George, but dismissed him from her mind. There was no sense dwelling on that now. Whatever might have been there wouldn’t be now.
“So what day is the drawing?”
“A week from yesterday.”
“So how exactly does it work?”
Hermione grinned. She loved being the one to tell all. “Well from what I understand, everyone is assigned a number. They will put all of the witches numbers into one cauldron and then all of the wizards will then pick a number out of the cauldron and that is how they will be paired up.”
“I will keep my fingers crossed for you. What number are you anyway?”
“I am number 22.”
Fred stood in the doorway listening to the two witches talk. He had heard how Hermione had talked about not being in love with anyone. He wondered if she had any feelings at all for his twin. He decided that she must or she wouldn’t have kissed him the way that she had, but that she knew there was no point in getting involved with anyone at this point. He hoped that George drew number 22.
The week flew quickly by. Finally it was the morning of the drawing and everyone was preparing to leave. The room was especially quiet as everyone contemplated what would happen this day. Molly watched her family as they quietly sat around the table. She was afraid of what would happen to them on this day. She looked at Ginny sitting next to Harry holding his hand and looking into his eyes. She was disappointed that they had married without her, but she was relieved that they wouldn’t have to be a part of this Marriage Law nightmare like the rest of her family.
“Well lets get going the lot of you! We don’t want to be late and have them confiscate our wands for not complying!” she said rushing everyone towards the door. A moment later they all apparated to the front steps of the Ministry of Magic where the ceremony would happen.
“Good luck, Mate,” Fred said to his twin. He hope as much as George did that George would draw Hermione’s name. He really didn’t care who he would get; as far as he was concerned any witch was fine. He wasn’t in love with anyone.
“Thanks, Fred.” George said slapping his brother on the back with more enthusiasm than he really felt. He had butterflies in his stomach and he felt as if he would loose his breakfast. Today would be the day he would find out if he got his hearts desire, or if he would spend the rest of his life longing for what he couldn’t have.
“Wizards and Witches, if I could have your attention please,” they heard someone shout. Everyone quit talking and looked up to the Ministry of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, waiting to hear what he had to say next.
“Here is the day that you have all been waiting for! We are here as a community to try to revitalize what was lost in the past war. Every one of you here to day will be a part of helping the Wizarding World regain its population. I am pleased to see how everyone here today is willing to set aside all their personal feeling for the greater good of the community,” he said smiling.
Grumbling could be heard all around and Hermione snorted in spite of herself. The idiot made it sound like they were voluntarily surrendering the rest of their lives for the Ministry, when in fact they had no choice at all.
“Now, if we could get all of the Wizards to line up they can begin drawing numbers. After all the numbers have been drawn, we announce the names and numbers of the witches. The numbers have been magically charmed so that you can not draw a close relative so we needn’t worry about that.”
Hermione watched as the men one by one went to the cauldron and drew a number. She wondered who would draw her. “Please god, don’t make it be Malfoy!”
Fred stood in line before his twin. He figured he was about the only one here that was not nervous about whom he drew. It was the luck of the draw, and he really didn’t care. In front of him stood Draco Malfoy and he could hear him speaking to his friends. “I had better not draw that Mudbloods name, or I will just surrender my wand right now.”
“I wouldn’t want to live as a Muggle. I would marry her if I drew her,” his friend Goyle told him.
“That’s because you are an idiot! Do you really think that I would live as a Muggle?” he asked incredulously. “My family would never allow that to happen.”
Fred and George both heard Draco’s comments, and Fred had to put a restraining arm on his brother to keep him from going after him.
“Not now, George,” his brother warned. “We’ll get him later.”
Finally they made it to the front of the line. It was a warm day and with the sun beating down on their black robes it was getting a bit warm to be standing outside. It was now Fred’s turn to draw. “Well, here goes nothing.” Smiling to himself he reached into the cauldron and picked a number. Reading it he felt his heart drop. It was Number 22. “Oh bloody hell,” he thought to himself.
Thank you to all the reviews. I really appreciate them. I am still interested in the pairings that everyone likes. I only had one specific pairing in mind, so I am open to the rest. Don't you love my evil cliff hanger...And what's with Fred drawing Hermione and not George????
