Breaking Point

Author's Notes: How much loss can one heart take? How much pain can soul endure? At what point does a person just finally snap?

WARNING WARNING DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER.

When Katie awake the next morning she found the new guy's jacket covering her. Getting up she looks around the room and finds him doing his homework at one of the tables. She walks over to him and holds out his jacket. "Thank you, for letting me borrow this."

"You're welcome," He doesn't even look up at her as he speaks. "Just set it down in an empty chair and I'll get it later." He continues to do his homework paying her no real attention.

Katie lays the jacket over the back of a chair then looks back at him. "I forgot to introduce myself last night." She holds out her hand towards him. "I'm..."

"Katie Bell," Hunter interrupts. "Sixth year Chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team." Hunter never once looks up at her much less accepts the offered hand.

"How... how did you..." Katie's stunned by his response more then she's upset by his rudeness.

Hunter sets his pen down and finally looks up at her. "While I do not care about Quidditch, the House Cup and would prefer to be left alone, I do know who all the major players in this school are. That includes each member of the House Quidditch Teams."

Katie's eyebrow inches up her forehead in surprise. "I'm impressed." She says with a faint smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Would you care to tell one of the major players your name?"

He shrugs and goes back to doing his homework. "Hunter Catiar," is all he says.

"Well Hunter, I need to get ready for my match." She gives him a friendly smile that he shows no signs of noticing and turns to head up the stairs leading to the girls’ dorms.

Hunter continues doing his homework but calls out her as she reaches the bottom step. "Katie..." She stops and turns back to se him still doing his homework. "Good luck." He says without even pausing to look at her.

Katie smiles at him again. He's not a bad guy. Pretty odd but not bad.

It had been a LONG grueling battle. Ron had struggled in the beginning forcing the twins and the chasers to work extremely hard to prevent Slytherin from scoring until he finally found his groove, then there was no getting past him. When Harry finally caught the snitch Gryffindor was already in the lead by 25 goals. The final score was Gryffindor 400 and Slytherin 0.

Gryffindor was now back in the running for the House Cup since they were now tied with Ravenclaw for second place. They had also established a good lead in the standings for the Quidditch Cup. Now it was time to celebrate and enjoy their victory.

When the Quidditch Team returned to the Common Room they were greeted to what could only be called organized chaos. The party was in full swing and everyone was already having a good time.

After making a quick tour of the room and receiving praise for her performance in the game Katie realized that Hunter wasn't in the room. Pulling away from the party she made her way up to the room he shared with two of her teammates.

When she got there she found him exactly the way she had expected. He was sitting on his bed strumming his guitar while having a cigarette. She smiles as she walks over and sits on the corner of his bed.

"You're missing a great party." She tells him. "Come on, let's go down and join the fun. I'm sure everyone would love to hear you play."

"I don't do crowds," he tells without even looking up at her.

"Come on do you think you owe..." Whatever she had been about to say was suddenly cut off as he slammed his guitar on the bed beside him.

The few times she had seen him his face had been either calm or void of emotion, now it was angry... VERY angry. "I don't OWE any of you a GOD DAMN THING. I never asked to be a FUCKING wizard and I certainly never asked to move to this SHITTY ASS country. My life was going just fine until I got that GOD DAMN letter saying I was a DAMN wizard and had to go to some FUCKING school. I have done everything I'm supposed to do and the ONLY thing I ever ASKED was to be left the HELL alone."

He gets up suddenly and walks over to the door. Opening it he looks at her. "Now I'm ASKING you to leave."

Katie is stunned by his sudden outburst and slowly gets up and walks out the door. As she passes him she sees no remorse at all. She then runs from the room crying all the way back to her room passing Ron, Hermione and Harry along the way.

The three friends watch her run past them and notice the direction she came from. Before the boys can think of what to do, Hermione takes charge and tells Harry to see what happened in their room since that was where Katie had come from. She then sends Ron to find Angelina and Alicia and ask them to join her in Katie's room.

As Harry walks into his room Hunter shoves him out of the way and storms off down the stairs. In the brief moment that he was face to face with his new roommate Harry saw that the normal apathetic teen was extremely upset about something.

Harry goes into the room and looks around Hunter's bed. First thing he does is put out the still burning cigarette and spray the air freshener. Harry notices a crumpled up piece of parchment on the floor beside the trashcan. Picking it up he straightens it out and reads it.

Ron comes in and sees Harry sitting on the new guy's bed reading something. Sitting beside him Ron looks over Harry's shoulder and his face goes deathly white as he reads the letter.

Hunter walked around the castle grounds for hours lost in his own thoughts. His pain and anger rose and fell like the ocean tide as he reread the letter over and over again in his head. Night had fallen hours ago and it had grown very cold out but he didn't notice. In fact he didn't notice anything outside his own anger, pain and loss. He sat down on the bottom step of the castle entrance and lit another cigarette as he recalled the first part of letter again.

Dear Mr. Hunter Catiar,

I regret to inform you that your mother Serena Catiar along with her fiancée Thomas Carter and their unborn child were killed in a car accident yesterday afternoon.

Hunter roars out his pain and rage for the entire world, not caring who hears him. "Feel better?" A voice behind him softly asks. He doesn't need to turn around to know who it is. "I thought I told you I wanted to be left alone."

Katie sits down next to him and places a comforting hand on his shoulder. "I heard about your family..."

"What family?" He asks with venom in his voice. "I lost my family the day I found out I was a wizard. That woman stopped being my mother the day I left for school. She and HER family were the ones killed, not mine."

He gets up and tries to walk away from her but she follows him. "Hunter I know..."

"You don't know a God Damn thing Katie so stop trying to comfort me cause you can't." He screams at her turning around to look her directly in the eyes. The emptiness that had made Snape cringe is replaced by anger, pain, rage and sorrow.

"You want to know about my life Katie I'll tell you.” He begins. "My life has been a living hell since I was ten. When the closest thing I had to a father was taken away from me because some KID thinks it would be cool to have a six-pack of beer at some party before driving home. Then the following year I found out that I'm a wizard. My mother, who I USED to be close to starts pulling away from me. While I was away at school my grandparents threw us out cause they couldn't handle it.

"I came home to a run down one room shit hole and had to sleep on a beat up old couch that summer. The ONLY bright spot of my entire existence was Erica. She was the ONLY friend I had at school and I DID care about her. Move ahead a little and I come home from my third year to find my mother's shacking up with a WIZARD and I've now got my own room, complete with three game systems, a library of games, a full bathroom and fridge. ALL so I never have to come out and REMIND them that I actually EXISTED."

Katie's eyes begin to fill with tears as he tells her about his life and the pain that he's been through up until now. She feels sorry for him and wishes that he would let her help him.

"If my life wasn't enough of a living hell at that point," he continues. "I HAD planned on asking Erica to go out with me when I got back to school only to read in the papers two weeks before then that her father, who by the way had been raping her since she was nine, had killed her and was awaiting trial. Now I've got to endure another year of hell, this time ALONE."

Katie gasps in horror. She could never imagine anyone being so evil as to do that to his or her own child. That's why he wrote that song he was singing when I walked in on him last night. I had no idea.

"If my life weren't enough of a soap opera for you at this point then you'll LOVE this part." His voice becomes filled with even more rage. "My 'mother' tells me that she and her fiancée are moving me to England and were getting married come mid-summer. The only thing she neglected to tell me was that they were expecting a kid."

He turns away from her. "Anything else you'd like to know or can I go now?"

Katie walks up behind him and wraps her arms around him. She cries softly into the back of his jacket before he pulls away from her.

"I'm not some broken toy that you can fix," He says turning around to face her again. "I'm already dead, my body just doesn't know it yet." She opens her mouth to say something but he stops her with a kiss.

There's no feeling to the kiss. No passion, no desire, no need for comfort. It's not a kiss from a man for a woman; it's a kiss of good-bye. "Do your self a favor," he tells her breaking the kiss. "Find someone else and leave me alone."

Before she has any time to respond he's already walking away into the cold darkness of the night and out of her life.
