Chapter 5
A/N: So sorry for the delay of chapter 5. Life has been nuts the last couple months. Much love to all of you!
Chapter 5: Of Anger And Innocents
Hermione caught up with Harry, Ron, and El in the Entrance Hall. She gave Elkara a look that said 'I'll explain later'. El nodded and the four teens walked down the lawn to Care of Magical Creatures.
When they reached Hagrid's cabin, they looked around, trying to see what kind of creature the half-giant had in store for them that day. When they didn't spot anything out of the ordinary they began to worry that they had to go into the Forbidden Forest. There was a collective sigh of relief when Hagrid walked around the corner of his hut and parked himself on a tree stump near the edge of the forest.
"Gather 'round. Gather 'round," he called to his class.
The class gathered around Hagrid, hoping that he would only be lecturing today. As they made themselves comfortable on the soft grass in the shade of the trees, Hagrid pulled out a book and began flipping through it. When he found the page that he wanted he looked up at his class and smiled.
"Who can tell me what a Shadow Phoenix is?" he asked with a smile.
No one, not even Hermione, raised their hands. They sat and looked at each other like their teacher had gone mental. All but the Muggle-born students had heard the legend of the Shadow Phoenix. Not one of them believed it was true. Hermione and Elkara looked around, pretending to be as confused as the rest. There was no way on earth that they were going to volunteer information.
Hagrid looked slightly put out. "No one? Not even you, Hermione?"
Every head turned to look at the brunette. She blushed and said,"I'm sorry, Professor, that's one that I can't answer."
"Wow! Hermione Granger has finally been asked a question she doesn't know the answer to," Draco Malfoy called.
She turned and glared daggers at him. "Listen here, Ferret, I know the answer. I simply said I COULDN'T answer," she dropped her voice and muttered,"Bloody fucking ferret, can't keep his damn nose out of anything."
Elkara, who was the only one that heard, giggled. Hermione smiled slightly and turned her attention back to Hagrid, who had started talking again.
They spent the rest of the class period listening to Hagrid tell the long version of the story of the Shadow Phoenix. For once, Hagrid had the rapt attention of his entire class, and some of them were even taking notes. In Hagrid's opinion, this was the most gratifying class he'd ever had.
During lunch, most of the talk amongst the seventh-year Gryffindors was about the Shadow Phoenix and why Hagrid had decided to tell them the story. At one end of the table, though, two Gryffindors were not discussing the Shadow Phoenix, they were talking about Phase One of Operation DLM. Elkara listened quietly as Hermione told the story of what happened in Malfoy senior's classroom after everyone else had left.
"Hermione, you need to tell me everything you know about Professor Malfoy. That way I can really help you destroy him," Elkara said softly to make sure no one overheard them.
Hermione nodded and said,"We've got a free period after lunch. We can go back to the common room and talk about...stuff."
El, looking confused, looked around to see why Hermione and finished so lamely. She spotted the reason in the form of Ginny Weasley headed their way.
Ginny sat down next to Hermione and said,"Thanks for this morning. You two are great."
"It was no problem, Gin. You're my best friend and you know that I would do anything for you," Hermione told her. Then, thinking fast, she said,"Ginny, would you mind walking with Elkara up to the library after lunch. I want to go up there now, but she hasn't finished eating, and I don't want to rush her."
Ginny nodded her agreement and Hermione left. She really didn't need to go to the library for anything, but she wanted an excuse to leave the two alone so they could talk. On her way up to the library she passed to tapestry that covered one of the many secret passageways Harry had shown her. She would have passed it without a second glance had she not heard voices coming from the other side. She knew that all the students that knew about the passage were at lunch, so she figured it had to be teachers. Being the curious girl that she was, she decided to listen for a bit.
"Lucius, you do realize that by doing this you've made yourself and Draco prisoners of this castle."
"Yes, I do. Draco and I have both accepted this."
"But why have you done it?"
"Now that Narcissa's gone, Draco and I are free. Sev, did you know that the only reason I took the Mark was because of Narcissa? She threatened my life, when that didn't work she threatened to kill any child we might have had. I didn't believe she'd do it, but then she got pregnant and drank a potion that made her lose the baby. Then she got pregnant again, I couldn't let her kill another child, so I joined. She ended up losing that baby because she refused to take it easy during her pregnancy. I clawed my way to the top of the Dark Lord's ranks, so that the next time she got pregnant I could beg him to make her take it easy. When my Draco was born, I vowed to do everything in my power to keep him safe. While 'Cissa was still around I couldn't really do much. You know how she was. But now, now, I can keep the promise that I made to my son the day he was born."
"What promise was that?"
Hermione walked away before she heard the answer. She was in shock because of what she had heard. Lucius Malfoy wasn't really an evil bastard? He was actually a good person, kind of? He truly loved his son? These were three truths that Hermione would have never expected of Lucius Malfoy. She finally made it to the library, her head spinning from what she'd overheard. She took a table near the door so Elkara would be able to spot her as soon as she came in.
Elkara and Ginny got to the library about fifteen minutes after Hermione and found her staring off into space, her eyes slightly glazed. El snapped her fingers in front Hermione's face, causing the other girl to nearly jump out her skin.
"Damn it, El, you scared the crap out of me," Hermione admonished.
"Sorry, but you were justing staring off into space. What were you thinking about?"
"Nothing, really," she answered,
The three girls left the library; Ginny headed for her next class, El and Hermione to the Heads' dorms. When they got settled in Hermione's room, Hermione told El what she had overheard between Snape and Malfoy senior. The other girl was silent for several minutes while she processed what she'd just heard.
Finally she said,"Does that mean Operation DLM is off?"
Hermione thought for a moment and said,"Hell no! We'll continue with it, we'll just have to tone it down a bit. That way, if he really isn't an evil bastard, we can call it off and there won't be any irreparable damage done."
El agreed to go along with this new plan and the two girls headed to their next class.
A/N: I know this is probably kinda short and a bit sucktastic, but i swear the next chapter will be better and longer. Bear with me, I'm coming off a severe case of writers' block. And sorry for the long wait, my computer crapped out on me, then when i got it back I updated "Pushing Me Away", then the damn thing crapped out again. Please R&R, I love knowing what you guys think!
