The Pain Behind the Mask

Chapter Five

Draco locked himself in his room, putting wards up so no one would disturb him. He knew Pansy would be stopping by for their date, but he didn't feel like seeing her, or anyone for that matter.

When he'd devised his plan to get the truth out of Granger, he'd been doing it for two reasons. One was he was just plain curious, the other was because he secretly wanted to hold it over her head that he knew he dark secret. He felt he'd take pleasure in knowing that Granger's seemingly perfect life was really in ruins. But now, he knew the truth, and it was horrible.

Hearing Granger talk about what Weasley puts her through on a regular basis, watching the tears fall down her face, it all just made him sick. He never suspected it would be that bad. From what she said about her boyfriend, Draco thought he was more like a Death Eater then a blood traitor. It was disgusting how someone could do things like that to a person they are supposed to love.

What troubled him most, was the fact that Granger still claimed to love him. He knew she couldn't, no one could love someone who did things like that to them. But she must believe it, she was under the effect of Veriteserum, she couldn't have lied. What state of mind must that vile red head have on her that she actually believes she loves him? It was despicable.

It was odd, Draco never thought he would care what happened to that little bookworm. Of course he didn't actually care that it was her, he just didn't think it was right for a girl to be treated like that by her boyfriend. It was something a coward would do... Someone had to help her, but who?

Draco let out an irritated sigh. He didn't want to help, but he knew he had to. Obviously no one else knew, which was surprising. It was obvious just by the looks of her that she was being abused, and yet no one had questioned it. She hid it well, the glamour hid all the physical evidence pretty much, but it did nothing for her complextion or eyes.

Draco paced around his room, growing more angry and irritated with every step. Why did this have to happen to him now? He was just working on getting his life back in order, and then that foul mudblood had to come and intervene.

To try and get rid of some of this anger, he drove his fist into the hard wall, leaving knuckle indents. He yelled loudly, growling. He couldn't feel the throbbing pain in his hand, nor did he care,he was too mad to notice. Anything he could to relieve some of this rage. He needed to get it all out before he did something he'd regret, like stick up for Granger.

After he quieted down slightly, trying to control his rapid breathing, he heard the creaking of Granger's staircase. He could hear her sobbing as she walked, which made his stomache drop. He didn't want the sounds to upset him,but they did. Against his instinct, he left his room and descended the stairs into the common room.

Granger was curled up in ball, her knees tucked under her chin. She was crying softly so she didn't notice Draco come down. He stopped walking when he reached the couch, not sure what to do.

Should he hug her? Say something comforting? He was never very good at comforting people, he blamed it on his father. But that was neither here nor there. Right now, he needed to think of something to do, and fast.

Acting before thinking, he reached over and put a hand gently on her shoulder. Granger did notice, she just kept sobbing. He knelt down beside the couch, rubbing her shoulder awkwardly. After a few minutes, she turned and glared at him, still sobbing.

"Why did you do it?" She asked, rubbing her red eyes.

"I don't know." Draco lied, not really wanting to admit the truth.

"Well I do." Granger pushed him away, glaring daggers at him.Draco backed away slightly, still keeping eye level with her.

"You do, do you?" He challenged her. Of course, she was going to try and figure him out.

"Yeah."

"Well then please, do enlighten me little miss know-it-all." He retorted, raising his voice slightly and returning her stare.

"Alright, fine. You did it to spite me," She began, her voice holding more strength now. "Because you enjoy seeing others suffer, it's some kind of sick pleasure you have. You have nothing better to do with your time then to make others feel like shit."

"Really, you think so?" He replied.

"Oh I know so." She answered.

"Yes well you're wrong. You no nothing about me or who I am. You all just think I'm such heartless fucking git, don't you? You think I'm so fucking jealous of you and your little fucking friends, well you know what? You don't know fucking shit. Maybe I was trying to help you-"

"Don't bullshit me! I know what you're like, you're fucking sick. You think you're better then me just because you're a bloody pure-blood, but all you are is a pathetic little Death Eater." Granger spat. That was his last nerve. Draco saw red. He grabbed her wrists tightly and held them over her head against the wall behind the couch, forcing her to stand. She whimpered, but didn't struggle. He looked at her with rage in his eyes, and that's when he saw it. Complete and utter fear in her eyes. The fear he remembered seeing in his mother's eyes countless times.

Draco dropped her wrists and backed away slowly, his hands in the air to show he meant no harm. She dropped back onto the couch, breathing heavilly and staring at him with a look of complete horror etched on her face. He backed away more, giving her her distance, not knowing what had came over him. He sat down on the coffee table so they were level and just tried to calm down.

The two sat there in silence, as if frozen in position. They just stared at each other, not saying a word. Granger still looked horrified, but her breathing was less erratic. Draco decided to break the tension.

"I'm sorry," He said, then paused, waiting for the sincerity to sink in. "Look, I just kind of flipped, alright? I don't want to hurt you, but it's just, you know nothing about my life and what I go through. I don't like being accused." Granger relaxed slightly at his words, but not enough to let her gaurd down.

"I just want to help you." Draco told her.

"Why?" She asked suspiciously, keeping eye contact.

"No one deserves to go through what you have been, not even a mudblood like you." A small smile creeped up on his face. She returned it with a half smile, catching the sarcasm.

"It's nice." She said after a few seconds.

"What is?" Draco asked, confused at her soft tone.

"To see you smile. I've never seen you really smile before. I like it." His smile widened, he hadn't been sincerly complimented in a long time. It was nice to have someone be kind to him for a change. Even if she was a mudblood.

To Be Continued...

Ok,there youu all go.I promised if I got enough reviews I'd update, and I didn't lie.I have to say this chapter was a different experience for me to write it.This is my first HG/DM storyy that I've actually gotten to the point where they're civil towards each other,so sorry if it seems out of character for them or unnatural.I tried.Anywayss, thnxx goes out to:

-Tjay Motou,ok sounds good, and I'd really appreciate any tips. And no,Draco didn't take the news too well, but who would? Even enemies have their limits.

-Emma Smith, glad youu liked it,please let me know when youu update Darkness That Consumes,I love that fic.

-angel,yes,I agree that Ron's acting like a Death Eater,oh the wonders of alcohol.

-Emmylovedraco,well,everyone loves a bad boy,right? I know I do.

-Sani,awwe I'm sorry my fic made youu cryy.Hopefully this chapter cheers you up a bit,it's a little more happy.I'm glad youu went against what you normally do and read my storyy,I really appreciate it,it makes me happy ^-^

-BuffyXO,well thanks for letting me know how I'm doing,I have witnessed things like this and have come close to being in this very situation,so I'm happy that I'm depecting it well. No,Draco won't torture her with his new information,I agree, that is way too low.And yes,I know saying Ron's only abusive when's he's drunk is not true, but alcohol is the reason for all the abuse, emotional and physical. When a person becomes dependent on things like alcohol or drugs, they are very irritable and moody when sobre and tend to emotionally abuse everyone.Again,I've had experiences with alcohol and drug dependencies so I'm hoping this fic is acurate. If you ever have any tips for me regarding this story, please let me know cause I'd love to hear them.

-magical heather, thanks for reading, happy to read your reviewss.

Oh how I love my reviews. You all are so nice in them.More reviews and hopefully I can update later on in the week.

Much Love...
