Chapter 4
October passed quickly for everyone. It was soon the night of the ball. That day, Albus had canceled all classes so the students could prepare for the ball that night. Hermione and Anakin hung out with Draco, Harry, Ginny, and Ron for the day. The day dawned cool and overcast.
“So, you still haven’t told us what your costume is Hermione.” Ron said.
“I know I haven’t Ron, and you won’t know until tonight at the ball.” Hermione laughed.
“Come on Mione.” Harry pleaded.
“Forget it. You’ll just have to wait until this evening.” Hermione smiled.
At a quarter till four, Hermione and Ginny re-entered the castle. Hermione was going to help Ginny get ready for the ball by doing her hair and make-up. Hermione was looking for an excuse to get Anakin off her mind.
“Okay girl, spill. What is wrong?” Ginny asked.
“What do you mean?” Hermione replied.
“Nice try. There’s something bothering you. What is it?” Ginny shot back.
“It’s nothing you can help with Gin. It’s something I have to deal with on my own.” Hermione sighed as she sat Ginny in front of the vanity.
“All right, but if you need anything, you know you can come to me.” Ginny said.
“I know, thanks Ginny. Now, let’s get started on your hair and make-up.” Hermione smiled.

Hermione exited her bedroom and found Anakin waiting for her in the sitting room. She cleared her throat and he stood up and faced her. She looked radiant. She was dressed as the Olympic Goddess Athena. Goddess of Wisdom.
“You look beautiful Hermione.” Anakin smiled.
“Thank you.” She said with a bright smile.
“Shall we?” He asked as he extended his arm to her.
Hermione nodded as she placed her arm in his. As they exited the rooms, she put on her mask. When they reached the Great Hall, the ball was in full swing. She and Anakin entered and quickly spotted her friends.
Harry and Draco were dressed as the Arch Angels Michael and Gabriele, Ron was dressed as Super Man and Ginny was dressed as Cleopatra. They quickly spotted Hermione and Anakin walking toward them.
“Wow! You look great Hermione.” Ginny said.
“Thanks.” Hermione smiled.
“The Goddess of Wisdom. It suits you.” Draco added.
“Yeah, I guess it does.” Hermione laughed.

Standing with Albus and Minerva, Severus observed Hermione and Anakin. He hadn’t missed the looks that the two had been sending each other lately. He was still quite worried about them being so close to one another. His thoughts were interrupted by Albus.
“Severus, you all right?” Albus asked.
“I’m fine Albus. Why do you ask?” Severus answered.
“You just seemed distracted.” Albus replied.
“It’s nothing. I guess I’m just concerned with how quiet things have been lately.” Severus said.
“Yes, things have been a little too quiet haven’t they.” Albus sighed.
Severus nodded and turned back to watch Hermione and the others. Harry and Draco were dancing on the floor, Ron was walking off to ask someone for a dance, Ginny was dancing with Neville, and Hermione and Anakin were alone at the table talking.

“Hermione, you all right? You seem nervous.” Anakin asked.
“I’m fine Anakin. I guess it’s just that Voldemort has been quiet lately. That’s not like him.” She answered.
“I see. I’m sure something will happen soon.” He replied.
“You’re right. I should be grateful for the peace and quiet.” She laughed.
Anakin laughed as well. The two continued talking. A few moments later, a slow song began and Anakin got to his feet and extended his hand to Hermione. She slowly placed her hand in his. The couple made their way onto the dance floor. Gracefully, they began to move as one.
“You are a wonderful dancer Hermione.” Anakin said.
“So are you. I didn’t know that Jedi could dance.” Hermione replied.
“We Jedi are allowed to have fun once and a while.” He said with a smirk.
Hermione just smiled in return. They moved as one across the floor. Severus stood and watched, he could tell that they loved each other and dearly at that.
‘This isn’t good. Yet, even though it’s wrong that they are together, they look right being together. As if they were meant to be together all along.’ Severus thought as he watched the young couple.
“Hermione, will you come outside with me for some fresh air?” Anakin asked.
“Sure.” Hermione answered.
The two left the dance floor and made their way toward the rose gardens.

“What is our next move Lord Sideious?” Voldemort asked.
“I have already begun training my new apprentice, Darth Maul. He will be ready come Christmas. Then, I will send him in to kill Hermione Granger. She is a great threat to me and my plans.” Palpatine answered.
“But you said she wasn’t a full JedI.” Voldemort said.
“She’s not, but the Jedi Council has sent Anakin Skywalker to protect her. If she chose to become a Jedi and he trained her, she would be the most powerful of all the Jedi.” Palpatine replied as he began pacing Voldemort’s throne room.
“What will you do about this Anakin? Surely he will protect her like he did before.” Voldemort questioned.
“Then, I will have to kill him as well.” Palpatine answered.

Anakin and Hermione sat on a stone bench in one of the gazebos in the rose gardens. Several other couples had retreated to the gardens for some private times. Most of course, were making out. Anakin took a deep breath, took one of her hands, faced her, and began speaking.
“Hermione, I asked you to join me, because there is something I have to tell you. Hermione, I love you.” Anakin said.
Hermione just froze. She couldn’t believe what he had said. She took a few breaths and started to speak, but didn’t get the chance. Just as she turned to speak, his lips covered hers. She remained still for a moment before returning the kiss. Anakin pulled her closer, as her arms wrapped around his neck. A few seconds later she pulled away.
“No. Anakin, we can’t do this.” She said gasping slightly.
“Hermione…” Anakin started.
“No. You are a Jedi Anakin. This is forbidden. You and I aren’t suppose to fall in love.” She said.
“But we did. We can’t change that.” He argued.
“Anakin, there’s more at stake here than our feelings. There are other lives tied in with ours. You have the Jedi Order and I have Harry and the Order of the Phoenix. We can’t do this.” She said as she turned away from him.
“Hermione, we could keep this a secret. No one would have to know.” He said hopefully.
“What? We would be living a lie. I couldn’t do that Anakin. Could you?” She asked.
“You’re right. It would eventually destroy us.” He sighed.
“Look, let’s just forget this ever happened and continue as normal. Once Palpatine is caught, you will be returning to Coruacant anyway.” She stated.
Anakin nodded. Hermione bowed her head, turned on her heel and rushed back toward the castle. She ran the rest of the way to her rooms. Once safely in her bedroom, she stripped off he costume and hurried into her bathroom. She turned on her shower and climbed under the hot jets of water.
“Oh god. What are we going to do? This is horrible.” She cried quietly.
She finished her shower, dried off, dressed for bed. She turned out the light and laid down. She held her breath when she felt Anakin stand in front of her door. She waited to see if he would say or do anything. After a few minutes he sighed and walked to his own room.
“Oh Anakin. I’m so sorry, but it has to be this way.” She whispered to the darkened room as the tears she tried to hold back, fell down her cheeks.
