revenge is sweet

This wasn’t how he was supposed to be feeling. Lucius frowned over the rim of his wine glass.

“I’m surprised Lucius. I must say that I was expecting a somewhat different reaction.” Severus drawled.

Lucius glared at his long time friend who sat casually in a black leather armchair across from him, “And what reaction were you expecting?”

“Don’t play coy with me Lucius. We’ve known each other too long, but I shall play along with your supposed stupidity for now. Why aren’t you acting a little more pleased about your success with Potter?”

At the sound of that name, the miserable bundle that was Remus Lupin stirred at Severus’s feet. He snarled at Severus when the man kicked him back down.

“I see you haven’t gotten him completely tamed yet Severus. But you’ve gotten pretty close amazingly quick. Care to share your secrets?”

“You beat me with Potter my friend. You had him broken in with just your first try.”

“Severus…”

“Not to be deterred I see. It was quite simple really. I didn’t give the werewolf his Wolfsbane potion and set him loose in a cell full of the prisoners we had no use for.” Lupin stopped growling and pulled himself back into a ball again, his amber eyes peering miserably into his lap. But Lucius sensed something else deep in the gaze of his friend’s eyes, almost like seconds thoughts.

“Well it seems to have worked quite well. I think you just need to give him one more go and then he will be completely tamed.” Lucius watched Severus’s face closely. Something inscrutable crossed the man’s dark face before it went blank again.

“I suppose so, but the mess was god awful to clean up. Wizard and witch’s parts everywhere.” With those words, Lupin’s head shot up, glaring fully at the wizard who sat above him. Severus sneered and yanked on the chain.

“Don’t you even think about it wolf. Or shall I take Lucius up on his suggestion and chuck you into another cell?” the werewolf’s growling silenced and Severus looked back at his friend.

“Well? Are you going to tell me what’s on your mind or not?”

“Only if you are.” Lucius’s gaze turned cold at Severus, signaling that he was quite serious. The man met his gaze levelly, barely acknowledging the house elf as he spoke to it.

“Take the wolf back to his quarters and make sure he stays there.”

“Yes masters.” The elf squeaked, throwing a nervous glance at Lucius, who waved it away carelessly with a gloved hand. With a pop, the elf and Lupin disappeared as Severus leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees with his gaze intense.

“This isn’t about Draco anymore is it old friend?”

Lucius stared resolutely into his wine glass, watched its contents swill around, “What about you Severus? This isn’t about your revenge against the old high school berks anymore either.”

“No I can’t say that it is,” Severus leaned back into his chair, “The wolf was never one of my tormentors but seeing as that Black is already dead, he’s my last chance at revenge.”

“Second thoughts?” Severus sighed, seeing that his stubborn friend would not reveal what was going on until he did.

“Partially,” Severus paused, but when he remembered that he was talking to the only man he trusted and the only man who trusted him, he carried on, “It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I walked in on the wolf stabbing his wrist with shattered pieces of a mirror, then I began to wonder.”

“Shattered mirror Severus? I thought you would have spelled it unbreakable.” Lucius tried to lighten the air, sensing something in his friend.

“Well obviously, I didn’t think that the wolf would be that much of an imbecile,” Severus leaned back and sighed, “I didn’t feel nearly as pleased as I would have liked to.”
He turned and looked expectantly at his friend.

“Hm. You know why I was doing all of this Severus.” The man nodded, “But the boy I broke tonight, wasn’t the one who murdered my son.”

“What do you mean?” Severus frowned.

“I haven’t the slightest idea,” Lucius chuckled darkly and kneaded his throbbing head, “I guess I’m somewhat like you. This wasn’t nearly as satisfying as I was expecting.”

“Revenge is sweet my arse.” Severus scowled and downed the rest of his drink.
