Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Fred stayed in the hospital, keeping a silent sentry next to his brother. No one could budge him, and when he slept, it was for brief moments with his head on the edge of the bed. Rest would not come for him until he was sure that his brother was going to pull through unscathed. Well wishing medi-witches brought him meals and he helped George eat what he could. George was taking time to recover; many of the spells used were still unknown. A lot was resting on faith and George’s resiliency and previously excellent health. Even with those variables, they all still feared the worst.

Once the healers had seen exactly how good of an influence Fred had on George’s recovery, they stopped asking him to leave. Not that Fred listened to them anyway. He could care less if all the galleons in the world were offered to him; he was not leaving that room. Being there fro his brother had made him feel useful, and it was the only thing he had to offer him now. No one was going to make him leave the room for any reason.

After a while, Kingsley came to see them, sent by the Ministry. Arthur Weasley would not have them questioned by any other Auror. Kingsley was almost a part of their family and Arthur thought that it would cause less stress on the family if Kingsley was the one who started the investigation. Fred reluctantly agreed, but demanded that they be questioned together. Whatever his brother said, he had to hear it. There were a lot of things going through his head at that point, things that he couldn’t share with the ministry. He was determined to stay in the room and not miss a single thing. He absolutely refused to leave the room for any other purpose than to use the restroom. Molly had commented that she was coming to the hospital to see both her sons and immediately broke down in tears again, not believing that the thought of both her sons there could be so easily spoken about. She was already going to have nightmares about this for the rest of her life, she didn’t know if she could have handled both of them being there at the same time. It would have broken something in her, she knew it.

Harry, Ron and Hermione came by a few times, under the guise of trying to cheer up Fred. Fred had no doubt that they were there trying to get clues and information that they could use to figure out who had done this. Fred dodged their questions with unease. The people that did this were after something, George hadn’t been able to speak about it, but Arthur said that their rooms had been searched. Fred gave them little information. The last thing that Fred wanted was for one of those three to be in this bad, trying to wake up from and endless sleep. There was a lot that they had done againt the Dark Lord so far, but this wasn’t a game that he wanted to play with them. This was something personal, between himself and his brother. They didn’t want anyone else involved. If their paths crossed with Harry’s, well, that was one thing. But Harry had not come to them for help, and he didn’t plan to ask for help on this either. It was stubborn, childish, he knew it. But this was between he and his brother, and whoever had done this. That was all.

They stopped coming after a few days of his stony silence when they asked questions. Fred could see Hermione itching to talk to the healers, but if she ever did, he didn’t see it. His Mum coming in was the worst. She was always flanked by Ginny, who was quiet, but sometimes she came with Katie. Their crying and attempts not to bothered him. What did they know? He was the one who should be falling down miserable. But that wouldn’t happen. He watched them cry, not offering any solace, simply waiting for his brother to get better. These were the worst days of wither brother’s life, and he had a feeling that none of the visitors to this room understood that.

His brother’s fluttering eyelids pulled Fred from his thoughts. Every slightest movement he made had Fred right next to him. Fred knew that when George finally woke and was well enough to speak, he was going to have to talk to the Ministry about what happened. Fred knew that it had to happen, there was no way his mother and father would let them keep anything from the Ministry, so he resignedly got up and sent for Kingsley. He’d rather get it over with now, rather than later, and he knew that his brother would feel the same way.

There was nothing that George told the Ministry that they couldn’t have figured out for themselves. Fred could read it in Kingsley’s eyes as he recited the questions that the Ministry gave him.

“Is there anyone you know of that would want to hurt you?” Kingsley said in a bored voice, letting the boys know that he was as complacent with the questions as they were.

Even so, Fred fought down a snort of derision. Didn’t the Dark Lord want to hurt everyone? Wasn’t he out there, on the loose again? He simmered in his silent anger, every once in a while George would look to his impassive face with understanding in his eyes. As much as George just wanted to get over this and move on, he knew that there was something different in his life. Things weren’t just going to go back to normal. This was something that wasn’t going to just fade away. He mirrored his brother not only in face, but in thought as well. His brother’s face not only held anger, but also a determination.

Kingsley gave his interview to the Minister and shortly after that, Fred was allowed to accompany George home. Mum had tried to convince them to go home to the Burrow, but neither twin had any interest in going back there. They wanted to go home, and collect themselves. The Ministry had given them more protection, and Dumbledore himself had come out to place charms and wards on the building itself. There wasn’t the matter of being safe there. They wanted to go back alone and figure out what they were going to do now. Both knew that things had changed, and they were eager to be out of earshot of healers and family to talk about what they had to do. Fred vowed not to sit back and let George become another statistic, just another injury at the hands of the Dark Lord. George completely agreed.

It seemed as though Dumbledore had read their minds as he warded the house. He placed so many charms and deterrents on their living quarters that not even their own family was sure that they could get in undetected. But after what had happened to Dumbledore, they knew that the old man had to feel just a bit as they did at the time. There was something different about him now, some intangible thing that let them know he was as eager to get to the bottom of his own mess as they were to theirs. Maybe after all of it Fred would ask him. That was if ever there was the opportunity.
