Theodore straightened to his full height and slowly lowered his wand. With the wizard holding Lisa in front of him as a shield there was no way the young teen could get a spell loose without the risk of hitting the girl. Thinking frantically, Theodore took in the man before him. He was big, his shoulders broad and strong. The wizard didn't look to be in any kind of discomfort holding Lisa's struggling form. Theodore's knuckles grew white as he clutched his wand tightly at the sight of his girlfriend's panic-stricken face.
"Where's my father?" he asked finally, mustering up all the bravado he could. It wouldn't do to have his voice quake while trying to be commanding.
The Death Eater straightened, realization of whom he was facing. "Junior," he exclaimed with a deep-throated laugh. "I didn't expect to see you out and about during this little venture."
Theodore's eyes widened for a split second. He knew that voice. "Mister Macnair," he greeted. He threw his glance quickly to Lisa and gave her a hard look, trying to force her to calm down. It seemed his message was clear as the girl stilled.
Walden Macnair noticed the effect. His chuckle rumbled through his chest and was muffled by the hood he wore over his face. He cursed softly and reached up with his free hand and removed the hood. "Ah, much better. Now I can breath," The burly wizard shook his head like a dog, his dark hair flying around his face. He smiled at Theodore, his white teeth gleaming in the dim corridor. "This is a well trained strumpet you have here Junior. A funny time to be getting a little slap and tickle though."
Theodore crossed his arms over his chest indignantly. "Well I wasn't informed that there would be so much… excitement happening today. I must be out of the loop."
Macnair laughed again. "Happens."
"I take it you're after Potter." Theodore wanted to get away from here as quickly as possible, but since Macnair was a friend of his father's, that would prove difficult without raising suspicions. It was bad enough they had been caught. Especially by a man who liked to kill so much he had become an executioner of dangerous magical creatures for the Ministry of Magic. If only he could get Lisa out of harm's way.
"Yes and no," Macnair replied. "Of course, the Master would dearly love it if we brought the boy to him, but we're here more to show the Ministry and that arrogant old fool Dumbledore that he isn't safe here anymore. It would be nice to put him in the grave, send him to the hereafter, but I doubt the old coot will show himself."
Theodore smiled lightly, his face taking a sinister edge. "You never know. Dumbledore is full of surprises. So, I take it that the Dark Lord didn't come along on this little assault."
Macnair regarded the teen before him suspiciously. He was asking far too many questions. It was time to change the subject. Setting Lisa on her feet but still holding her close, Macnair moved his hand down to cover her left breast. The Death Eater smiled wickedly as he felt the girl tense. A soft frightened moan issued forth from her mouth. "This is a ripe little lass you have here Junior. Have you already had a taste?" The older wizard leaned down and ran his tongue along her neck, keeping his eyes on Theodore.
Cold sweat broke out on Lisa's back and trickled down her spine. Her eyes locked with Theodore's and she silently pleaded for him to save her from this evil wizard. At that moment, more than anything in the world, she wanted her father.
Theodore took a step forward, his wand clutched at his side. If he weren’t careful the thin piece of wood would snap in two. The young wizard took a deep breath and let it out to the count of five. He didn't dare wait until ten. "No, not as such, and I would rather be the first if you don't mind… sir. I'm not into sharing."
Macnair laughed. "That will change soon enough. Your father was like that in the beginning too. He hated giving up his little prizes. He learned to appreciate the finer points of sharing though."
"I'm not my father," Theodore said coldly.
The Death Eater cocked an eyebrow. He had wormed his hand beneath Lisa's shirt and kneaded her tit through her bra. Tears streamed down her face. Macnair ran his tongue over the other side of her neck and bit hard into her shoulder. The girl's cry of anguish spurred Theodore into action. He dashed forward and yanked Lisa away from the other wizard. The surprise on Macnair's face turned into anger and he gave a large backhanded swing to Theodore's face.
"How dare you whelp!" Macnair thundered.
"I told you I don't share," Theodore shouted back.
Theodore raised his wand then and cast the stunning charm. Walden Macnair was ready for it though and the spell was knocked aside with ease. Macnair strode forward and grabbed Theodore's wrist, immobilizing his arm. "Have you gone barmy boy? Attacking another wizard over an insignificant thing like a girl is asinine. It will get you killed one of these days." He pushed Theodore to the ground and towered over him. "I'll let it drop this time only out of respect for your father, but let me tell you Junior, if you ever raise your wand to me again, you will regret it."
Quaking with frustration and rage, Theodore slowly stood up. His face was red and he could feel his heart hammering in his chest. He wasn't faring too well, but he wouldn't let anyone touch Lisa while he drew breath. She was his and no one would have her. He turned to look at her and his face softened slightly.
She was huddled on the floor, pushing back into the wall trying to disappear but having little luck. She thought about her father and how strong and protective he was. She thought about her childhood and all the times he had been there to hold her and comfort her. How he was there to pick her up when she fell down. Her father would protect her from this evil wizard that towered above her.
Lisa looked at Theodore and the young woman felt her heart hammer in her chest. He was defending her, protecting her. Or at least, he was trying to. Fear crept over her again as she realized that he was just no match for the dark wizard. Theodore didn't have the skill or the experience to be able to take down the older man. Slipping her hand into her pocket, Lisa curled her fingers around her wand. "If Macnair tries to harm my Theodore he will have to answer to me also," she thought determinedly.
Theodore stood up and moved away from Lisa, circling Walden Macnair. His wand was still in his hand, his knuckles burning from holding the thin wood so tightly. The dark wizard frowned in displeasure and raised his wand toward Lisa. "I can see you have feelings for the girl Junior. Don't make me hurt her. Put that wand of yours away." Macnair let a cold smile cross his face. "Why don't we go find your father? I'm sure he would be thrilled to see you."
"So he's here is he?" Theodore asked. His eyes were cold and lifeless as he talked to the other wizard.
Macnair chuckled, his smile growing colder. "Of course. He was looking forward to seeing you."
"I’m sure," Theodore stated sarcastically.
There was an anguished scream down the corridor that made Lisa sob and flinch away. Theodore shivered at the sound, remembering the pain he had heard countless times growing up. It was the sound of the Cruciatus Curse.
Macnair looked in the direction of the scream with a hungry gaze. "I'll tell you what Junior. Why don't we just go our separate ways for now? It sounds like the boys are having some fun and I would hate to miss it. I'm sure you want to find that other little friend of yours."
Theodore's face turned ashen. "What are you talking about?"
"Your other friend," Macnair laughed. "I just left her in the dungeons with some of the others. She was… showing us a good time, if you know what I mean." The dark wizard leaned forward slightly, conspirationally. "I think she was a bit shocked that there was so many wizards around, but she performed like a champ."
"No," Theodore whispered in horror. He couldn't believe what was happening. He had failed. He had wanted to find Blaise before anyone could harm her in any way. It looked like he was too late. Not only did he fail Blaise but he had failed Lisa also. She had been put into harms way and was very nearly raped for the effort. If they ran into any more Death Eaters there was still a chance she would be.
Macnair laughed heartily at the sight of the dismayed look on Theodore's face. "Not to worry Junior," the big man said as he gripped Theodore's shoulder in a painful hold making the teen wince. "I would say she enjoyed herself. Her screams were certainly fun to listen to."
Theodore wrenched loose from Macnair's hold and watched impotently as the Death Eater strode away chuckling to himself. The sandy haired wizard slid his fingers around his wand again and brought it out of his pocket. The red haze in front of his eyes pulsed with his anger. It would be so simple to kill the big man with his back turned. Who would care really? It would mean one less Death Eater. Theodore slowly raised his wand and pointed it at the retreating figure.
"Theodore?" Lisa exclaimed breaking Theodore out of his thoughts. He turned his head, feeling like he was on strings. She was standing now, her wand clutched to her chest like a shield, regarding her boyfriend with desperate eyes. "Was he talking about Blaise? Is she really…?"
Theodore lowered his wand and spun towards his girlfriend. "Dear Merlin, I hope not." He began to shake all over. His body broke out in sweat and he wobbled slightly on his feet. "This is all my fault. I shouldn't have let her go. I shouldn't have taken so long to chase after her."
Lisa clutched Theodore's hand. "It's not your fault, baby," Lisa consoled.
His eyes flashed to hers and he snatched his hand away. "No, it's yours!" his anger bubbled inside him and he shoved Lisa back against the wall. She squeaked out her pain and looked fearfully into the furious eyes of her lover. Leaning close to her face, he shouted, "You're the one who tried to keep me from going. You're the one who wanted to come along. You're the one who slowed me down. Zabini is my best friend you fucking cunt. If she is…" he choked on his words, not able to finish the sentence. He wheeled from her and sprinted down the hall.
Lisa let a sob escape her throat at Theodore's harsh words. She realized that he was right. She had slowed him down. He might have been able to catch up to Blaise if he hadn't been delayed. "Oh Goddess," Lisa muttered quietly. "Please be all right, Blaise. I don't know what I would do if Theodore started hating me." With one last shuddering breath, Lisa moved quickly after her boyfriend.
Coming to a junction, Lisa went to turn to the right, the way she had seen Theodore go, when she collided with a solid chest and fell to the floor in a heap. She rolled to her back and waved her wand quickly, desperately, at the figure she had run into and let loose a stunning spell. Her spell was off and smashed into the wall to the left of her target sending a spray of pepples over them both.
"Bloody hell, Turpin," Theodore yelled in shock. He grabbed her hand and hauled her to her feet.
"Oh my goodness!" Lisa screeched. She grabbed his robe and spun him around, running her hands over his back and through his hair, brushing some dust and rocks out of his hair and making sure he was in one piece. "I'm so sorry. I didn't realize it was you. I thought you left me behind and it was another Death Eater."
"Well I didn't leave you behind," Theodore said softly, a hint of guilt in his voice. He took her hand and pulled her close. "It's a good thing you have lousy aim. Come on."
Lisa could feel the tension in Theodore as he dragged her along. His whole body was coiled tightly, ready to spring apart. Remorse coursed through her body and the young woman fought to control the guilty tears that threatened to overwhelm her.
Theodore ground his teeth together in frustration as he tried to remember what room the Ancient Runes class was. "Wait Theodore!" Lisa called out, pulling on his hand to stop him. "This is it."
Almost falling as he skidded to a halt, Theodore wheeled around and looked at the door. It had a little hieroglyphic to indicate the room number, which made the young man sneer. He grabbed the handle, ready to throw the door open quickly but he stopped himself. With the school under siege, as it were, the teachers and even the students would be on edge. Throwing open the door would be foolhardy. Instead, he knocked. "Professor Mayet! Open the door. It's Theodore Nott."
Theodore and Lisa waited for seconds that seemed to stretch into eternity. There was no sound from the other side of the door and the two students were beginning to believe that there was no one within the classroom. Lisa looked nervously down the corridor.
"Holy Hell," Theodore cried. "Open the fucking door Mayet!" Lisa made a disapproving face to her boyfriend, but he was much to agitated to notice.
Much to their surprise the door swung open slowly. An older man poked his head out, his wand held up in front of his face. His piercing, dark eyes looked down on Theodore. "That's five points from Slytherin for foul language," the old man rasped. "What are you two doing here?" With a speed that shocked Theodore, the old teacher pulled the two students into the room. The small gathering of students looked expectantly at Theodore and Lisa, hoping they had news about the threat around them.
"It's about time you showed up, Theodore dear."
Spinning to his right in surprise and relief, Theodore swept his eyes over Blaise Zabini. "What the Hell is the matter with you?" he yelled as he grabbed her shoulders and shook her roughly. Blaise whimpered lightly, her head rocking back and forth at the jarring treatment.
"Tut, tut Mister Nott," the old professor said with a frown. "That is no way to treat a young lady. Show some respect please."
Theodore surprised everyone in the room as he snatched Blaise to him in a tight embrace. "Theodore!" Blaise exclaimed. "What's gotten into you?"
He slowly pulled away from the strawberry blonde witch and held her at arms length. Even though he could feel Lisa's hard gaze into his back he didn't acknowledge her. The teacher made to interrupt him again, but Lisa, much to Theodore's relief, distracted the old man with her account of what was happening. Something about getting separated from their class and running for their lives. Theodore didn't pay much attention as he pulled Blaise off to the side of the class. "I'm just so relieved to see that you're alright. Turpin and I had an encounter with Walden Macnair." Blaise gasped at the news. Macnair was known for his penchant for cruelty. Blaise noticed the tiny trickle of blood at the corner of Theodore's mouth then. Using her thumb, she wiped away a dab of blood. "He said that he and a few other Death Eaters had one of my friends and were forcing her to service them. With you running off like you did, it made me fear that they had you."
Tilting her head up defiantly, Blaise scoffed at the idea. "Well as you can see, they do not have me."
Kamal stepped over to them and put a large hand on both their shoulders. "Will one of you inform me what is going on." His intense eyes bore into Theodore's and the lanky teen looked away quickly as he thought what Macnair might have meant.
"Where's Greengrass?" Theodore asked with a bit of fear in his voice.
Kamal noticed the quaver and his eyes widened in fear. "She didn't show up for class. I was hoping that she was with you."
Theodore couldn't look the burly teen in the eyes. The relief he felt over finding Blaise now evaporated in his belly as he realized that another friend could be in danger. He looked at Lisa as she talked to the professor and a ball of fire burned in his gut. He thought about how he would feel if Lisa was attacked and raped. Just thinking about finding her body broken and used made his heart ache. Theodore closed his eyes tightly and willed the image of Lisa, lying dead on the ground, her eyes open but lifeless out of his mind. It wasn't something that was going to happen. It wasn't something that he would ever allow to be true. Slowly he turned back to Kamal. "I was told that one of my friends was… well it was more of a hint, an offhand remark really, and it might not have even been true."
Kamal grabbed the front of Theodore's robes and lifted him off the ground. Blaise gasped loudly and took a step back. Lisa looked over at the sound of Blaise's outburst and cried out as she dashed over to the two boys. "Let him go this instant!" she bellowed.
"Spit it out, benim dost," Kamal spat. "Just say that the Death Eaters are raping Daphne." He threw Theodore down and snatched his wand from his robe pocket. "Where are they? Where are the korkak that dare harm my woman?"
The old professor hobbled over with his voice being drowned out by the din of all the students. "Boys. Boys, please calm yourselves. This is no time to be quarrelling amongst yourselves. We must come together and stay calm in the face of this bedlam."
Theodore pried himself away from Kamal and looked up at him angrily. "Don't get all high and mighty on me El Sayeed. I haven't done anything to your precious little Greengrass. I suggest you direct that energy to where it's actually useful and we go find the little Goth."
Kamal stared hard at Theodore before he let out a loud sigh. The Turk closed his dark eyes and heaved in a deep breath. "Yes, you are correct. I apologize." He looked pointedly to Lisa and then back to Theodore. "You can understand my reaction though?" Theodore nodded and Kamal returned the gesture. He strode swiftly to the door and flung it wide. There was a startled gasp from a couple of the students, but with a look from Kamal, they all quieted down.
Professor Mayet gasped at the direction his class was headed and wobbled uneasily towards the open door. "Sit back down Mister El Sayeed. There will be no leaving this classroom. I forbid it."
Kamal turned to the teacher and looked down on him menacingly. The old man faltered briefly but was confident in his teacher's authority to stop all attempts at a coup. "You will take your seat immediately," Professor Mayet rasped as he poked Kamal's chest with a bony finger. "Everyone will sit quietly and calmly until Professor Dumbledore says you are free to go. This is a school emergency and order will prevail."
Sneering coldly, Kamal grabbed the professor's hand and pushed the man back. "Stay your hands away from me old man. I will take orders from no one." With one last pointed look towards Theodore and Blaise, Kamal disappeared from the room. He needed to find Daphne and he meant to do just that.
Theodore shared a quick look with Blaise before he grabbed Lisa's hand and followed his Turkish friend. Lisa made a surprised cry and almost fell as her boyfriend dragged her along. Blaise tried to regally sweep from the room but swayed slightly. Her eyes wanted to close, but she mustered her energy and followed her friends. She could feel the heroin in her system coursing through her veins and weighing her down. She wanted to just lie down and sleep, but she knew she couldn’t do that. Not now.
Kamal stood at the end of the hallway looking down into the cavernous dungeons. Theodore could tell he was uncertain on how to begin his search. The castle was huge and it could take days, weeks, and maybe even months to search the whole building and its surrounding areas. The dark haired teen turned to pierce Theodore with a desperate gaze, his eyes asking for help that the mouth couldn’t utter.
With a friendly squeeze, Theodore put his hand on Kamal's shoulder. "I was told that she was in the dungeons. We have to go down and begin to look. It has to be close to the stairs, since Macnair came so suddenly upon us."
Lisa agreed. "He came out of nowhere it seemed. If I didn’t know that Hogwarts had anti-apparition wards I would swear he had just popped in behind us." Lisa blushed as she realized that three sets of eyes were on her. "What? It's true," she exclaimed defensively making Theodore smile at her. Her smile in return warmed his heart. Theodore was very relieved that nothing had happened to her.
The four teens descended into the dungeons and strained to see and hear through the darkness, the dankness. Slowly they crept along the tunnel like corridors, trying each door as they went along. They hadn't gotten far when they heard laughter come from the room to their right. Kamal opened his eyes wide at the realization that the room the laughter was coming from was the same room he had so recently been in with Daphne. His heart sank a little, even as his anger rushed to the surface. Brandishing his wand like a sword he took a step towards the door.
Theodore and Blaise caught his arms and pulled him back. The voices and laughter inside the room suggested there was four or more Death Eaters inside. One evil wizard was more than a match for any of them, they had little hope against four.
Footsteps echoed down the corridor and Lisa looked behind them in a panic. She grabbed Theodore's arm and pulled him into an empty cell, the other two students following close behind. With the door opened just a crack, they watched three more Death Eaters rush along the hall and crash into the room ahead. They heard muffled yelling and shouting, the voices in a panic. Theodore smiled coldly. It looked like the Hogwarts faculty was rallying. "They're trapped in there," Theodore whispered smugly.
Blaise grabbed his arm and looked beseechingly into his eyes. "Daphne could be in there as well."
"What can we do?" Lisa asked. "We can't fight half a dozen wizards. We would be slaughtered."
Kamal growled fiercely. "It's a good day to die. I will not allow them to keep her."
Theodore grabbed his friend's arm before he could rush off. "It is not a good day to die, you fool. No day is good to die."
They stared at each other for a moment. Kamal ground his teeth together as his desperation grew. "We can't just sit here and do nothing. We can take them. We must take them."
"No!" Theodore hissed. "We don’t know for sure if Daphne is in there at all. We know for a fact that there are at least five wizards in the room. There may be as many as seven. All we can do is make sure they can't leave by binding the door locked. With all four of us casting the spell it should hold until the teachers can arrive."
"They may kill her!"
"They will kill us all if we go rushing into that room," Theodore whispered fiercely.
Theodore pushed his way out of the little cell and crept towards the room that held the Death Eaters. He felt Lisa behind him as she clutched desperately to his sleeve. She wasn't trying to pull him back but instead seemed to be using him to pull her along. He almost smiled. At least the girl still thought that he might be able to protect her. Another quiet set of feet stepped out into the hall. Blaise was with him. It did bother Theodore that they might seal Daphne's fate, might be responsible for the girl's death, but Theodore reasoned that they could also save more lives. Wasn't the need of the many more important then the need of the one? That's how the aurors thought at any rate, but when it was someone close to you the lines blurred. It… hurt to have to make this decision. They didn't have any choice though. The four teenagers were no match for trained Death Eaters.
Theodore took a deep breath as he stood in front of the door. He looked back at his companions and was surprised to see Kamal standing with them. The dark teen looked to be fighting his emotions. His jaw was clenched tightly and his eyes were strained with grief. Kamal locked eyes with Theodore and nodded. He meant to go through with the plan.
As the four teens raised their wands a bright flash flowed out from underneath the door and brightened the dark corridor. Brightened the hallway so much that they had to shield their eyes. A loud popping followed the flash and then all was in dark. "What the Hell!" Theodore exclaimed loudly, before covering his mouth with his hand. There was no way the Death Eaters on the other side of the door missed his exclamation.
In answer to his fears, the door to the dungeon slowly opened and they all gasped at the sight before them. Daphne Greengrass clung to the door. She held her blouse to her chest, the thin material ripped apart and hardly covering her. Her skirt was torn and hung loosely on her hips, the black fabric covered in dust and sand. Daphne's hair was wild and dirty, her face tear stained and red. When she looked up at the four teens her eyes widened in shock, so bewildered that she didn't realize anyone was there. "Oh shit," she whispered hoarsely as she locked eyes on Kamal. Daphne fell to her knees as the tears fell from her eyes. "Kamal, I didn’t… I'm sorry. I didn't know what was happening."
Kamal dropped to his knees before her and scooped her up into his arms. Daphne looked so small in his arms, so helpless. She buried her face in his massive chest and her tears soon soaked his shirt. Eyeing Theodore coldly, Kamal carried Daphne away, taking her to the infirmary.
Theodore's heart fell to his stomach as he watched them go. He had been so concerned about Blaise that he didn't think of the others that could have gotten hurt. Seeing one of his friends so traumatized, so overwhelmed was painful. He turned and looked into the room that Daphne had been held in, the room that she had been raped in. It was empty. The Death Eaters were gone. The school was safe.
