Ch. 4 Snakes are Born not Made
Ch. 4: Snakes are Born, Not Made
Harry and Draco continued staring at each other at the small table. Both wanting to get up to see who their room mate was, neither wanting to be the first to break the eye contact. Finally with a sigh, Harry stood up and walked slowly out the doors of the great hall. He saw the crowd of students pressing around the list. He cleared his throat loudly and all the students looked up at him. Without speaking they moved aside to let him pass. Draco watched all of this from the back of the crowd and thought that maybe it would be nice to be friends with Potter now that he was even more famous than before.
Hermione averted her eyes as Harry stalked past him and whispered I’m sorry so low that it was hard to make out. Draco heard this, having come into his power over the summer. He knew instantly what she meant by it and waited to see Harry’s reaction.
Harry already knew who his room mate was. He knew it the second Dumbledore had said the words room mate. He walked up to the list and looked down the list of names under Slytherin.
Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy room 713 The Green Room
He simply shrugged and walked slowly down out of the entrance hall towards the Slytherin common room. He was closely followed by a very surprised platinum blonde. Harry and Draco walked in silence down the deserted corridor that led to the entrance to the Slytherin common room. Stopping at the deserted stretch of ordinary looking wall, Draco suddenly realized that he hadn’t gotten the password from anyone. He tried a few things and nothing worked. “Potter, did you happen to overhear he password from he anyone?” Harry shrugged and said, “it doesn’t matter, we don’t need it. He passed his empty hand through the air in front of the wall in a series of complicated wrist movements and the wall slid open. Draco stood there looking down right affronted.
“How in the hell did you do that?!” No one is supposed to be able to get into the common rooms without the password! Harry simply shrugged and motioned for Draco to precede him. Draco led the way, angrily, to the Green Room, which was to be his new home for the entire term. This was the biggest room in the dungeon dorms and he wondered, weather Snape had given it to him or Dumbledore had given it to Harry. It doesn’t matter he thought. I still have the best room.
Draco gave the password and stepped into the cavernous room. It looked different than it had the last time he had seen it. The walls were stone and there was a roaring fire in the grate. There were two huge canopy beds on opposite ends of the room. Two identical wardrobes, two identical desks, two identical reading nooks complete with cushy chairs, lamps and side-tables. Everything was identical in everyway except for the colors. Everything on the far end of the room was done in green, silver and black. But everything on this end was done it a lurid, red, gold and white. It was such a clash of colors that Draco could feel his dinner coming back up.
Harry stepped further into the room with a disgusted look on his face. “This will never do, he sighed. Draco started to say that he was not going to be sleeping on gold and red sheets but stopped when he saw Harry draw his wand. With one flick of his wrist, everything on his end of the room changed colors. Everything went from red and gold and white, to a much more soothing green, silver and black. Draco was astonished. What made him do that? I had assumed that he would want everything in Gryffindork colors. So Draco asked him. Harry simply shrugged and said, “I’ve always been a Slytherin, just never got to enjoy it before.” And he proceeded to put his things away.
They spent the rest of the evening in relative silence, rearranging the room the way they wanted it. Draco was starting to feel calm around Harry. His presence was all over the place. Draco could feel when he moved whether he made any noise or not. It was strange, yet pleasant in its way.
Harry stepped into the adjoining bathroom to dress for bed. Though he never made a sound Draco knew that he had shut the door behind him. The level of magic in the room dropped dramatically. He must have gotten really powerful over the summer, Draco thought as he changed into his sleeping clothes and climbed into his bed.
Harry emerged from the bathroom red-faced from washing. Draco looked up as he re-entered the room to see that he was clad in only a pair of black silk lounge pants. His stomach was firm and muscular. Harry was no longer the scrawny underfed boy he had been the term before. Draco’s stomach flipped at the site of him. Without saying a word he burst our laughing. Harry looked up from his laundry basket and asked what was so funny. Draco simply grinned and climbed out from under his blankets. He was wearing an identical pair of pants and nothing else. Harry grinned and they both laughed and crawled into their beds.
