chapter 5

Harry and Ron sat at the dining room table. Harry’s head was resting in his hand with his elbow on the table. A blank stare graced his features and the aim of his gaze was somewhat hazily directed in the general vicinity of a wizards chess board. Ron sat across from him. A look of determination marked by his sharp steady gaze, furrowed eyebrows and tongue slightly poking out from in between his lips.

After a few minutes Ron moved. “Check.” he said with a satisfied smirk. Harry looked up from where he was staring, and moved a piece. “Harry… You’re in check. You can’t move there.” he said incredulously after a few seconds. “What?” Harry questioned. “Have you been paying any attention at all? You’re in check.” “Oh.” Harry said as moved his piece in favor of another one. Ron looked up at him, then grinned triumphantly. “Checkmate.”

Ron’s gloat was cut short by “Pig” flying through the open window and dropping a letter in front of Harry. The letter was addressed to Harry and Ron. Ron reached over, grabbed the letter, and tore open the seal.

Harry, Ron,
I am writing to let you know that I am coming home early. My parents had an emergency meeting, and we had to fly back. If it is alright with your mum, Ron, I will floo in tomorrow afternoon.
See you soon,
Hermione

Ron turned the letter over and grabbed a quill off of the table.

Hermione,
Sure! You are always welcome at my house. We will be expecting you tomorrow.
See you then,
Ron

After sending off “Pig”, Ron walked into the kitchen and grabbed an apple from the counter.

Draco was sitting at his mahogany desk. He was staring at the floor contemplating the meaning of life, when his house elf Ruby, popped into his room. “Master Draco sir, Mistress Malfoy has sent Ruby to give you a message. You is to meet Mistress in the library in five minutes.” Ruby said, her eyes casting downward. “ Did she say what for?” Draco asked sharply. “No sir.” Ruby responded. “That is all Ruby, you may go.” I wonder what she could possibly want. He thought to himself.

When Draco got to the library, his mother was seated by a window in the far back corner. Rain was cascading down the panes of glass and Draco couldn’t tell if his mother was looking through the window, or simply staring at her reflection. When she turned around to face him, her face held no emotion and her eyes seemed hollow. He wanted to ask her if everything was alright, but he knew his mother would not answer him if he did, so his question remained unasked.

“ You sent for me?” He asked. “Yes. It is nearing the end of summer. We will need to buy your school supplies for September. I will be going into Diagon Alley tomorrow afternoon, and I would like you to accompany me, so that we may shop for your supplies.” Draco nodded his head “Yes mother.” Draco said. “Is that all?” “Yes” she said. Narcissa turned around and began to stare back out of the window at the rain. Draco turned at his queue to leave, and swiftly exited the library.

The next day found Harry, Ron and Hermione in Diagon Alley, sitting in the Three Broomsticks, drinking butterbeer. Hermione had decided that they needed to get their books today, because school would be starting up again soon. The day had been spent talking about how their summer’s had been so far, and Hermione had just finished telling them about her rather uneventful trip to America. “It was quite boring actually. If it hadn’t been for my cousin Ashley, I don’t know how long I would have lasted. I did get some good reading time in though, so that was nice.” She said casually, before picking up her butterbeer and swallowing her last drink.

“Well, I guess we best be off then, if we want to beat the crowds.” Hermione said, sliding out of her bench seat and standing up. Ron and Harry followed suit and the trio headed out of the Three Broomsticks and onto the cobblestone street.

Making their way to Flourish and Blott’s was a difficult task. The streets were crowded with families searching for school supplies, and it was near impossible to cross without getting knocked into. Ron’s feet were stepped on, Hermione was elbowed in the ribs, and Harry was knocked in the head by a levitating owl cage, following behind a small woman wearing powder blue robes. “Ow!” he yelled clutching his head.
“You need to be careful with that big head of yours Potter.” A voice said from a few feet away. Draco Malfoy appeared a few seconds later. “I am surprised that hasn’t happened sooner actually. What, with Dumbledore filling your head with all that save-the-world bullocks, all the time.” He snickered. “Shut up Malfoy” Ron sneered. “Oh! Hello Weasel. Didn’t see you there. Not really one to stand out in a crowd. Are you? Always being overshadowed by scar head here.” Draco smirked. “One of these days you will get what’s coming to you, you filthy little rodent.” Ron snarled between clenched teeth, as he brushed through the crowds, purposely knocking into Draco’s shoulder, trying to catch up with Hermione.

Draco turned his attention back to Harry who was watching Ron and Hermione step into Flourish and Blott’s, but not attempting to follow them. Harry looked back at Draco who was checking him out. “Like what you see Malfoy?” Draco scowled. “I was looking at your poor state of dress Potter. I can’t decide if you were once fat? Or if you are wearing Molly Weasely’s hand-me-downs.” He stated in a bored tone.

Harry met Draco’s eyes and stepped closer to him. Their faces were almost close enough to touch. Harry leaned in towards Draco‘s ear, sending a shiver down his spine. And huskily whispered “I know you want me Malfoy, but if you wanted to see me naked, I think I liked the flattery method a bit better. You wanted to…What was it? Oh yes! See my face light up with joy, rather than rage. Isn’t that what you said in your letter? Harry pulled back and chuckled, his eyes dancing with laughter at the look on Draco Malfoy’s face.

Draco gaped in horror at Harry who was still smiling at him with one eyebrow raised. Draco came to his senses and forced a sneer onto his face. “Whatever Potter.” He said pushing past him and disappearing into the sea of people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

After pushing past Potter, Draco made his way over to the Hogs Head and ordered a Fire Whiskey. “What’s got ya troubled young Mr. Malfoy?” The bartender questioned. “You look scandalized.” Draco concentrated on making his face blank, and muttered something about crowds and Malfoy’s. This seemed to be enough explanation for the bartender, and Draco made his way over to a bench in the far corner and sat down.

Draco thought about the way that Harry‘s hot breath felt against his ear and shivered. He remembered Harry’s sexy smirk when he pulled back, mocking him, laughing at him, and teasing him about what he could never have. Draco snapped. “Who the fuck does Potter think he is?” Draco muttered to himself. “And in public too... I can‘t believe I walked right into his trap. How dim witted could I be? What an arse.” Draco scowled and tried to concentrate on anything besides Harry Potter. He picked up his drink and let the whiskey roll down his throat.

After two more Fire whiskeys and a butterbeer were finished, Draco left with a warm heat in his belly, and a fuzzy feeling, fogging his senses, making him feel slightly dizzy. A familiar voice was heard somewhere vaguely off to his left. “Draco!” Narcissa Malfoy whispered harshly. “Wipe that ridiculous grin off your face. We are ready to leave.” she grabbed him by the arm and dragged him down the street.
