Chapter Five

Chapter 5

Lucius finished the letter he was writing to his son and sent it off with his eagle owl. Once that was done he felt he now had the time to contemplate what to do about a certain dark haired puzzle. He had no qualms to admitting that he wanted and had always wanted Severus. There had always been something about him that had constantly drawn Lucius like the proverbial moth to the flame. His quick wit, his intelligence, his demeanour was a perfect complement to Lucius’s own personality. As his son would say, they ‘clicked’. He had always regretted not being able to spend more time with Severus over the years, first obligations of his marriage, then parenthood, and of course, his service to the Dark Lord. Lucius sighed as he thought about all the years that he had wasted in a fool’s crusade. Not that he didn’t believe in the cause anymore, one pure blood would always be worth more than twenty half bloods and a thousand muggles, but the person he had allowed to lead him had been faulty from the start. Unfortunately, Lucius had not had the savvy yet to realize that at the time. And once caught in the web, it had been very difficult to see his way clear of it. Of course, his tremendous pride was also a thing not lightly dismissed. If it had not been for Severus’s timely and enlightening confession of spy hood, he would at this moment be in Azkaban or, if he was lucky, in the Malfoy tomb. He owed Severus a lot for clearing his head and showing him again what his priorities were. But for dear Narcissa, there had been no saving her. She could not be shown the insanity and faults of her lord and had decided to stand with him and, thus, fall with him. But her presence was not missed in his life. She had always been quite removed from him in day-to-day activities and once Draco had been conceived neither of them had had much use of each other in a sexual way. They had been quite happy discreetly entertaining others in their beds. The arrangement had been quite satisfactory for them both. The only thing apart from Draco that they had in common was Voldemort. In the end, her loyalty to her master had been more than her loyalty to her estranged husband and now she was gone.

Lucius leaned back in his chair and surveyed his library. He was really quite fond of this room. It was exactly to his taste with deep red woods and dark blue fabrics. He knew Severus liked this room as well and, in fact, they had spent many an evening in here, drinking wine and discussing Voldemort’s latest orders. Well, he had been discussing, Severus had been soaking up everything to report to the side of Light later. Lucius tried to dredge up some anger over being played a fool, but as hard as he could it just wasn’t there. Severus had played the deeper game and had won. Happily, he had allowed Lucius to win as well.

Just as Lucius was about to call to have his breakfast delivered to him there in the library, his morning post arrived. He paid the owl and opened the morning’s edition of the Daily Prophet, leaving the other periodicals until later. He was shocked to see the object of his thoughts on the front page.

“Childbearing Male Discovered at Hogwarts
Professor Severus Snape, age 38, has been discovered to be a childbearing, or Geronis, male. Professor Snape has taught potions at Hogwarts for almost twenty years and has had no marriage partners. Recently, he has been commended for his part in the war with You-Know-Who as a spy.

At this time, Professor Snape has no comment but Headmaster Albus Dumbledore delivered a short statement. ‘Professor Snape is distressingly single at the moment.’

A Geronis male is a rare occurrence. The last reported Geronis male was Mr. Reinhold Lutzer of Germany who has since given birth to two sons both fathered by his spouse.

Geronis males are male humans who have the ability to conceive, carry to term, and give birth to off spring. It has been said that the ability is genetically linked to a distant common ancestor who had been hexed by his very pregnant wife. The hex has been attempted countless times and has always failed. It is reported that the original hex was attempted while the witch was in a horrific rage at her husband’s unwise remark of “What’s the big deal? It’s just a baby in your belly. Now, where is my dinner?”

Professor Snape’s ability has been confirmed by a medi-witch’s report done at the time of Professor Snape’s onset of puberty, which is the age when the condition manifests itself. The report was destroyed, for unknown reasons, but a rough copy had been kept by the medi-witch who has asked to remain anonymous.

It has been determined that Professor Snape has already received many offerings of marriage and tokens of affection from many men. The above photo was taken as Professor Snape gathered up the items from what was called “the keeper” pile. It is believed that Professor Snape will consider the men’s names in this pile as possible suitors, or “keepers”.

Lucius stared at the photo of Severus clutching a pile of very expensive items, trying to keep them from falling back onto the table where obviously more gifts were left. Was that a diamond encrusted quill? Lucius set down the Daily Prophet and picked up his copy of Wizard’s Weekly. Sure enough, there was a photo of Severus, this one taken on a previous occasion at Hogwarts, with the screaming headline “A Potion in his Cauldron?” Lucius quickly scanned the article but it had no more to say than the Daily Prophet did, other than random information such as Severus’s astrological sign and a list, short as it was, of who he had previously dated or been connected to. The idiots failed to mention the dates of these associations and made it seem that they had occurred recently instead of back in Severus’s school days. Lucius’s name was not on the list. He wasn’t sure if he liked that or not.

How could Severus have kept this from him? Lucius was an intelligent man and could, of course, come up with quite a few reasons. But he was still taken aback at the magnitude of this news and the fact that he appeared to be the last to know. That really irritated him. Apparently even his son assumed that Lucius’s ability for discovering secrets was stronger than this because no mention of it was in his letter this morning. Lucius deplored redundancy, Draco knew. He quickly went through some of his other mail but nothing was pressing or as important as this news. Perhaps, Lucius thought as he stood up and stared out the window, perhaps this could work towards his favour in the wooing of Severus Snape. He watched a small wren be stalked and hunted by his eagle owl on its way back to its roost. Just as the prey was caught in mid flight Lucius Malfoy had finally struck on his plan. He smiled as he turned back towards his desk and gazed at the photo on the Daily Prophet. A frown creased his brow as his eye caught the last line of the article again. Who in Hel were Severus’s “keepers”?
