Chapter V: The Forbidden Forest

Chapter V: The Forbidden Forest

04/20/91
Being back at Hogwarts wasn’t much of a blast for Draco. He missed Hera terribly, his classmates hated him and cursed him behind his back for having lost fifty house points, not really caring that thanks to him, Gryffindor had lost 150 points of their own, and that same night, according to the note he received during breakfast, he would be serving detention.

He put on his cloak before leaving the Slytherin dungeons and went up to the entrance hall, which was empty, by the way, since he seemed to be the only one who actually bothered to get there on time. He leaned against the wall until Filch showed up, who gave him a harsh look as though saying “If you put your dirty shoe on that wall I’ll kill you”. Only a couple of minutes later, Potter, Granger and Longbottom arrived.

‘Follow me’, Filch said with a devious expression on his face.

He then lectured them incessantly about how they should never break school rules and how the punishment they would be getting wasn’t nearly enough for them to learn, and they should be chained to the ceiling from their wrists. Draco wasn’t really hearing any of it. He was inertly walking behind the group, unconsciously rubbing the only ring he ever wore. He stopped walking in front of Hagrid’s hut, along with Filch and the Gryffindors.

‘That yeh, Filch? Hurry up, I want ter get ‘is over with’, Hagrid said, and Draco suddenly had the very bad feeling this would be a lot worst than he had thought. His suspicion was supported by Filch, who said they would be going into the Forbidden Forest.

Draco tried to argue, he would tell his father about this, but he knew that, no matter what he said, he would still be going in there. The four students followed Hagrid to the edge of the forest and there, right in front of his eyes, was the first piece of the puzzle he had tried to solve since Christmas. There was silvery unicorn blood on the ground…

Discovered he has been, leaving a trace of red and silver blood behind him. He shall fall once more before the train takes the hero away from his true home for the first time…

I don’t like this one bit, Draco thought. Luckily, as he saw it, he was teamed with Longbottom. Yes, he was a useless coward, but at least he was no hero. No hero, no troubles.

Draco, Fang and Longbottom went to the right, going further into the forest. The more they walked, the darker it got. Draco was beginning to get too jumpy for his taste. Every twig either of them stepped on made him look around in fear. He needed a diversion immediately.

Poor Longbottom… he shakes like a leaf, Draco thought. I thought Gryffindors were meant to be brave! Did he buy his way in or what?

He sneaked behind him quietly and grabbed him by the shoulder.

‘AHHHH!’, Longbottom screamed, throwing red sparkles to the air, like Hagrid had asked them to if they were in trouble.

‘Idiot, it’s just me!’, Draco laughed.

‘Y-you shouldn’t have done that, Malfoy!’, he complained.

‘You have no sense of humour…’

‘What’s goin’ on in ‘ere?’, Hagrid asked as he ran towards them.

‘Nothing…’

‘He scared me! On porpoise!’, Longbottom cried.

‘OK, that’s it! Come with me’, Hagrid said, going back to where Potter and Granger were.

Once they were all together again, Hagrid rearranged the groups, and this time he was matched with Potter.

‘Great…’, Draco mumbled as they walked away from the rest.

They walked deeper into the forest, following the slivery blood splattered all over the trees and the ground.

‘Look…’, Potter whispered, lifting an arm for him to stop walking.

There was a beautiful white unicorn on the ground… dead. Then, a bush on the edge of the clearing quivered and a hooded figure crawled towards it and begun drinking his blood. Draco screamed and ran away as fast as he could.

This was it. He had been a few steps away from that someone Hera had talked about. Let Potter have him, let him be the hero.

Draco ran so fast for so long he could hardly breathe when he caught up with Hagrid, Granger and Longbottom.

‘Malfoy? Where’s Harry?!’, Granger asked desperately.

‘Facing death, probably…’, he said, more to himself that the rest.

‘WHAT?’

Then, they heard a centaur getting closer and saw Potter riding it.

‘Harry! Harry, are you OK?’, Granger asked, running to check on him, followed by Hagrid.

Draco touched his ring again. He just wanted to go home…
