Lupinus Sublimis
Chapter 5

Through the engulfing mists of horror Sirius tried to reason
as to what course of action was the best to undertake in such a
situation. Remus was crouching on the floor, holding himself in his
arms and urging him to run away. But Sirius could not bring himself
to do that for it was in times like this that Remus had always needed
company the most.

The hazel eyes were full of guilt. Remus had in his anger and
bewilderment forgotten that the full moon was due to make its
appearance that night. He had forgotten that it had been time to
exile himself from the sights of everyone lest he harm them with his
curse. And now an instinct filled with uncontrollable bestiality
urged him to sink his growing bleeding teeth on Sirius\' gloriously
unsullied human body. When that thought crossed his mind he had
yelled through tears of disgust for Sirius to run away; instead the
young man was still there, his dark hair spilled over his shoulders,
the silvery-gray eyes perplexed, and oh no… the arms were getting
closer to him again!

He wanted to rip them off with viciousness. The other part of
him, still fighting to retain his human intellect, wanted to push him
away with all due swiftness. Sirius had to get him to the Shrieking
Shack; it was the only safe place. Ideally he should have been there
before the sun bid them ado, but it was now too late to grieve over
the long lost minutes that had come to pass.

Sirius tried to concentrate. His brow was collecting heavy
beads of sweat, his lips mumbling what seemed to be incomprehensible
rubbish; and then he could no longer lie on his back. Sirius rolled
onto his front and pushed his canine body onto its four paws, rising
from the ground. Remus smiled faintly when he saw Padfoot grab hold
of him by the torn neck of his robes. He had fallen limply with the
power of his changes. The dog sniffed softly and took a tighter hold
of his friend\'s attire; the smell of torn bloody skin he did not like
filled his oversensitive nose. Remus felt exhausted, his legs had
stopped functioning and his limbs throbbed with the exertion of
unwanted transfiguration. His lips opened and tried to form Padfoot\'s
name but instead they hissed hot foul air. The dark dog\'s pull on his
clothing was becoming more fanatical; it was only a matter of time
before reason marched out of his mind and left him to be a public
menace.

Somewhere in the back of his mind he was glad Sirius could
change his beautiful youth\'s body into the massive sturdy frame of a
black dog when his hand went up to grab hold of the fur around his
neck. In this manner, Sirius managed to drag the suffering boy away
from the moonlight filtrating through that gothic window, to a safer
place where he could regain a little strength and stand up. Remus was
struggling to remain awake, but he was relieved when he no longer
felt the pounding need to tear the delicious human flesh from the one
he loved.

Padfoot stared into the eyes that were no longer the pretty
hazel he could willingly drown in. Remus whimpered when the dog
inched his way under him and gave him an abrupt push. The werewolf
boy understood the message to mean `stand up\' and so he made the
effort. Using the ancient walls of Hogwarts as support the pair of
beasts slowly made their way to one of the exits leading to the
castle grounds.

As soon as they had set themselves on the frozen yellowed
grass Remus dropped to the ground unable to control anything any
longer. Padfoot fought with his entire animal might to get his friend
up again, wishing that there was some way in the world to take this
burden upon himself. Unfortunately, there was no way in the wretched
universe to reverse the fact that Remus was bound to suffer all his
life. All his life he would be miserably cursed to be an abomination.

Remus clutched at his chest and began once more to rip off
his clothing in huge desperate handfuls, his eyes were now a deep
shade of infernal brown and he pitifully howled in agony whilst
looking up at the accursed full moon.

The ground pounded with weight and to his surprise, Padfoot
saw Prongs racing in full throttle through the grand entrance of the
castle and in their direction. If a dog has the ability to smile,
then Padfoot was the dog to do it in style. He could not have been
gladder to see the pair of them rascals, for Wormtail had come as
well. He was shivering, making horrible terrified sounds with his
squeaky voice and little teeth, but at least he was there hanging for
dear life to Prongs\' head. The stag came to a halt and brought with
him an incredible amount of dust with him.

Wormtail dropped to the ground along with a loud sound; he
was breathing as if he had been the one running and for several
seconds the beady eyes scanned the heavens as if making sure that
they were still there.

A painful howl brought the three young animagi back to the
serious reality they were facing and saw that Remus was
unrecognizable. It was complete. At least the painful part was over.
Wormtail ran towards the frenzied Whooping Willow, which was swinging
its long perilous branches as if desperately trying to get lucky that
night had hurt somebody. The little rodent slipped unnoticed and
worked his magic to make the tree cease its maddening harassment of
the air. Padfoot and Prongs had just about enough time to drag the
indisposed werewolf into the tunnel before the tree resumed its much
beloved trashing.

Moony was furious at being forced to do what he did not wish
to do and tried pitifully to return to the surface and continue his
well established love and hate relationship with the moon. Rage
soared through him as they entered the Shrieking Shack and the
werewolf freed himself from Padfoot\'s grasp, fervently choosing to
make a run for it. The dog was taken by surprise and yelped when his
body landed against the wall. Moony had never been this violent and
obsessive with staying outside. Usually enough of his human mind
remained to dictate that to do so would be too dangerous. But on that
faithful evening, the effect of too many emotions in one day yielded
unnerving results.

Prongs was there to block Moony\'s exit, the heavy sounds of
their quarrel could be heard all the way to Hogsmade village and the
people made the sign of the cross over their faces for they were
infernally convinced that the specters of the dwelling were about to
wreck havoc over them. Moony launched a brutal attack on Prongs who
was tenaciously refusing to let his frenzied friend pass through. The
stag lost his balance and the abomination that had not long before
been gentle lovely Remus jumped on top the squirming beast and
attempted to rip his neck apart.

Wormtail was screaming and twitching so loudly that Padfoot
thought the rodent was on top of him when in fact the panic streaked
little animal had managed to climb on the ceiling fan. Padfoot
snapped back into action and knocked Moony off of Prongs who
struggled to his hoops.

The dog felt his mouth fill with the intoxicating red liquid
that was blood. Moony hit the lower step of where the stairs to the
second story of the Shrieking Shack began and made a sound somewhere
between a yelp, a whimper and a growl. He collapsed onto the wooden
floor and lay there, not moving.

Padfoot heard a sharp intake of breath coming from Prongs, a
frightened cry for the rat above and then he too ceased to think.
Darkness overtook him.

Sirius awoke suddenly with a start, jumping to a sitting
position, grabbing the sheets around him and trying to get out of the
bed to search for Moony. He was caught half-way out of the bed he had
been sleeping on by a pair of strong arms which pushed him back onto
the soft comfortable material of the mattress.

\"Padfoot, it\'s ok. We\'re all ok. We brought you to the
Hospital Wing this morning.\" Sirius blinked in disbelief and looked
up at James quizzically.

\"Where is--\"

\"Look to your left and you\'ll see him. Has been refusing to
come around though,\" the bespectacled boy was evidently trying to
make it sound more humorous than it was.

Peter\'s head hit the arm of the chair where he had been
dozing and waved towards Sirius who of course did not notice for he
was looking at Remus.

He was lying gracefully on the hospital bed on his back, his
warm blanket covered his nude chest, one arm rested gently on his
abdomen that was falling and rising with calm breathing, the other
arm was hanging limply over the side of the bed. Sirius adored the
look of utter tranquility on the appealing face which was turned his
way just a little so the chin was almost touching the pale skin of
Remus\' chest. The dirty blonde hair with its soft curls was spread in
all directions over the white pillow and a little covered the closed
eyes; those pink lips were slightly parted invitingly.

The tall dark haired youth ignored James\' and Peter\'s
protests (as well as that of his hurting muscles) and rose. He walked
over to the bed right next to his, taking the hanging arm and rising
it to his lips for a brief kiss, Sirius lifted the blankets covering
Remus\' body and slowly but surely came to lie besides the sleeping
boy; and covered their forms with the cloth. Sirius smiled lightly as
he turned onto his side and used his free hand to run his fingers
amorously over Remus\' shoulder, taking the path over the collarbone
and then to the face that held his gaze entranced.

\"Pretty Remus…\" his silken voice whispered next to the other
boy\'s ear. Pretty Remus was the understatement of the century, if he
did say so himself. The hand came to brush the hair off Remus\' face
and Sirius\' veins turned to ice.

He remembered the taste of sweet blood before he had tasted
in his mouth right before he blacked out the night before. \"Oh
Merlin…\" Sirius saw three thin, yet still red and almost healed lines
that marked Remus\' face diagonally and a memory kicked in. He
remembered the shadow that was cast by the flying buttress cutting
off some of the light of the orange setting sun on the western
horizon and felt his stomach clench. How ironic it was that the only
scar that Remus would never be able to conceal to the world was the
product of Sirius\' protection, and that this one in fact, would serve
as a reminder of their absolute devotion to one another.

Still that thought made Sirius feel no better about what he
had involuntarily done and he was determined to inflict a similar
mark upon his own flesh to make things even.

\"Nnmm…\" Remus stirred and opened his eyes. Sirius\' worries of
self-retaliation were washed away when he saw the boy in his arms
smile up at him sleepily.

\"Oh lookie there! Moony\'s awake, mate!\" Peter jumped from his
chair and approached the bed where Remus and Sirius were lying in
each other\'s arms.

\"Hey Wormtail. `Lo, Jam- Prongs…\" Remus pressed his hand to
his mouth as he yawned and snuggled up to Sirius who was very happy
to receive the boy closer. Remus noticed that he was not wearing a
shirt and immediately grabbed the sheets and dragged them to his
chin, feeling self-conscious of his scars. \"Er… why am I here? James
what in the world happened to your neck?!\"

James covered the scratch on his neck and realized that Remus
remembered very little of the pandemonium they had gone through the
night before. \"Nothing. Nothing.\"

\"Potter…\"

\"All right. All right! You were a very bad wolf last night
that\'s all. Tried to kill us all and well…\" he twirled his wand
between his fingers apprehensively while looking around the chamber
they were in for a possible route to run away.

Peter was chewing a chocolate frog while looking at the
card. \"And Padfoot and you pretty much knocked each other out.\"

James finally found a way to make things funny. \"That\'s quite
a story to tell my kid, when I have one.\" He manipulated his voice to
make it sound childishly squeaky, \"`tell me again how uncle Remus and
uncle Sirius got together Daddy!\'\" He changed his voice again to
sound deeper and pushed his glasses up his nose while trying to look
formal. \"`Well, son. They beat the living crap out of each other--\'\"

\"HEY!\" Remus\' pillow hit James square on the face, but Remus
was giggling and at the same time blushing bright red. Sirius looked
as if he were going to die right there and then for he was gagging
with laughter.

The nurse nearly had a heart attack when she saw her four
patients having a pillow fight. Mr. Black was providing the pillows
for Mr. Lupin to throw at Mr. Potter and Mr. Pettigrew was cowering
behind an armchair. She came into the chamber and the boys halted in
mid-action. She scowled and urgently told them to knock it off, but
Sirius would swear later that there was a hint of a smile in her
pleasant face.

Remus could not stop smiling. Things were looking so good
now. They were about to get better.
