Reading, Writing, And a Labyrinth

Harry began to rant at that statement. “Why in the hell do I need to read this dusty old book on dark magic and write a stupid paper on it if my experiences are what will get me the certificates?”

Snape looked at the young man. He could see the fire burning in his eyes. Harry was still angry. He still felt himself a murderer. Severus patted the seat next to him motioning Harry to sit down. The young man reluctantly obeyed. “Harry,” Severus said in a very gentle tone, “Do you really want to know why? I really don’t think you do, at least not yet. I don’t think it will take you a week to finish the parchment on your experiences. If that’s all it takes, what are we supposed to do for the other eleven weeks here?”

Harry sat there watching the fire reflect in Snape’s eyes. “We can’t leave after I’m done?”

Severus laughed, almost bitterly, “No, Dumbledore had the floo cut off here for the next 3 months. He said it would be best if you couldn’t be disturbed.”

Harry watched the older man for a moment. “I see. In other words, he’s being a meddling old fool again. He really is a sadist, you know?”

Snape just shook his head when Harry said that. Harry picked up the book, content on reading if he was going to be there for 3 months without a choice. Soon, though, he became restless. Harry searched through the castle for the perfect place to read, that was not by the hearth. He found a spare bedroom, and noticed that it had a balcony that over looked the many acres of rose gardens at the back. He also noted that the garden was set up with a labyrinth in the center. What really caught his eye, though, was the fountain. It was large enough for a grown man to swim in, yet it sparkled with a light of its own. The full moon shining down on it only made it appear to be more enchanted.

Harry decided that this would be the perfect place for him to read. He transfigured the ottoman in the room into a comfortable chair and moved it to the balcony. He took his wand, and muttered Lumos after he got comfortable, and laid it on one shoulder so he could see the words in the text.

As the first rays of morning peeked over the horizon, they shone almost directly in Harry’s eyes. Opening one, he saw that he’d slept on the balcony. His page had been carefully marked, and an ancient hand sewn quilt had been draped over him. He looked to his left and found one Severus Snape gazing out into the garden. The older man looked completely different to Harry. He stood there in a pair of navy blue silk sleep pants, and nothing else. Harry admired the man’s toned body. Why would he want to hide that chest under those bulky robes? Wow! It’s amazing what his hair looks like first thing in the morning. Harry made a face as he realized what he was thinking, and about whom he was thinking it.

“I see you are awake, Potter. You didn’t get much done last night.”

Harry stammered as Snape turned to him. “I…uh…I guess I fell asleep reading. The garden is beautiful.”

Severus surveyed the garden that he knew so well. “Yes, it is beautiful under the first rays of the morning sun. You should get moving now, Potter, breakfast will be served in 45 minutes in the sitting room.”

With a grace Harry had never seen, Snape swept from the balcony and left Harry to his own devices. It was not long until the younger man had showered and changed, and made ready for the day ahead. After breakfast, Harry decided that he wanted to get a better look at the garden in the east of the chateau. “Severus, I’m going to go out in the garden and get a better look at the fountain and the labyrinth.”

The older man who had been lost in his own thoughts snapped to and answered, “I do believe that I’ll accompany you.”

Harry followed him down a hall the out a secret door directly into the garden. It was even more beautiful to walk through than to look upon from the balcony. Harry gazed upon the many different colored roses, and longed to reach out and touch them, yet he didn’t.

He noticed a tall plant with rather dingy purple flowers blooming on it. “Deadly Nightshade,” Harry mumbled.

Noticing two more plants, he quirked an eyebrow, pointed and asked, “Who would plant Deadly Nightshade, Hemlock, and Foxglove in a garden of roses?”

Snape smiled fondly at the deadly plants, “My grandmother.”

Harry made a confused face. “Huh?”

He noticed something in Snape’s eyes that he almost thought might be joy. “My grandmother planted them, Harry. She had an affinity with beautiful herbs. This block was always called ‘Deadly Corner.’”

He walked deeper into the garden leaving Harry to ponder what he just heard. When Harry caught up, Severus was standing at the edge of the labyrinth. The young man smiled at him. “Is there another place to enter?”

Snape raised an eyebrow. “You know about walking the labyrinth?”

“Sure,” Harry said with a chuckle, “I read about them at Hogwarts. At night, I would visualize myself walking one to sleep without dreaming.”
