Potions

POTIONS

It took every bit of courage Harry had to show up to NEWT Potions. He didn\'t want to; he dearly wanted to crawl back to his room and forget Draco Malfoy even existed. But he knew if he skipped, Snape would track him down and give him detention, and the part of Harry\'s mind that could reason practically amidst this horrific new situation warned him that he didn\'t want to be alone in the hallways at night when Malfoy could find him again.

So it was that he sat in class, ignored by Ron and Hermione, and in turn ignoring Neville\'s tentative attempts at conversation. It hurt like a bitch to sit, so he was almost relieved to be standing, stirring.

But he could sense Draco across the room, and even though he avoided looking at the blonde boy, his entire body trembled with lingering horror.

Thus he was distracted when Draco passed within inches of him as he swept forward to deposit a vial on Snape\'s desk, sending Harry a menacing look in passing. Harry\'s heart leapt into his throat, and it wasn\'t until the fierce burning overtook his hands that he realized he\'d spilled burning solution all over himself.

He cried out and waved his hands in the air, trying to rid himself of it, and from the front of the room he heard Snape curse.

\"What have you done now, Potter?\"

The professor descended upon him like a menacing bat, and Harry cringed away from the sudden movement.

He heard Snape\'s impatient grunt, and suddenly the man\'s steely grip locked around his wrists, yanking his hands up for Snape\'s inspection. The black eyes swept over Harry\'s burning skin, then turned disdainfully to Harry\'s face.

\"I have better things to do than clean up your mistakes. Get to the hospital wing, Potter,\" Snape said curtly. \"Ten points from Gryffindor for carelessness.\"

Harry nodded numbly. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Hermione taking a step towards him, but Ron clamped a hand on her arm and shook his head at her.

Shaken, Harry turned to leave the dungeons, feeling Draco\'s burning eyes on him. A shudder stole through his form, and he was suddenly obscenely grateful for the stinging burn on his hands. He could bury himself in the sterile environment of the hospital wing, and perhaps strip himself clean of some of these horrible things boiling inside him. She\'d run a diagnostic spell--

Harry felt his body seize up as he emerged into the chilly corridor, realizing it.

If I go to the hospital wing, she\'ll FIND OUT what he did. That will HARM DRACO MALFOY.

No no no no no.

He couldn\'t move, he couldn\'t take one step closer to the hospital wing.

Why? Harry thought, furious at himself. Why did I have to think about it? The spell wouldn\'t have stopped me if I hadn\'t realized…

He almost crumpled in on himself in despair, but bit his cheek fiercely, holding himself in check.

His hands were still hurting, the skin red and blistered. Harry surveyed them, cringing at the sight. What was he going to do? What could he do?

Harry closed his eyes miserably, running any number of basic healing charms through his head. They wouldn\'t help him, but that was all he could do.

* * *

\"Potter!\"

Harry had been sitting miserably, staring silently down at his untouched food in the Great Hall. He hadn\'t wanted to go to dinner, but he didn\'t want to walk around alone with Draco out there somewhere, and no one had been heading back to the tower.

His still-painful hands were clutched under the table, hidden from sight.

\"POTTER!\"

Snape\'s hand clamped on his shoulder, and Harry nearly jumped out of skin, letting out a frightened yelp.

\"I just had an interesting talk with Madame Pomfrey!\" Snape snarled, pulling the boy\'s face to meet his. \"Apparently, a certain young celebrity opted not to visit the hospital wing. What\'s wrong, Potter?\" His lip curled contemptuously. \"Are you hoping to rouse pity, with your poor, bereaved hands? Perhaps make your nasty Potions Professor look cruel?\"

Harry gaped at him, unable to stammer a reply. His mind raced for an excuse, but Snape didn\'t wait for one.

\"Well… Well…\" Snape straightened, face flush with malice. \"Perhaps it\'s time I showed you how nasty a Potions Professor can be. You\'ll scrub cauldrons tonight, boy. With or without burned flesh.\"

Harry stared, appalled, at him. But-- but that meant he\'d be out--

\"Tonight at seven, Potter,\" Snape growled. \"Do not be late!\"

With a whirl of black robes, the man stalked off. Harry stared after him for a long, despairing moment.

He then turned his eyes, and everything within him recoiled with horror at seeing Draco Malfoy standing just a short distance away, witness to the entire exchange.

Malfoy caught Harry\'s eyes with those inhuman gray ones.

\"Be seeing you, Potter,\" Draco drawled, smiling maliciously.

Harry sank back onto the bench, but even the presence of his fellow Gryffindors did nothing to allay his horror at what was soon to come.
