Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Severus Snape was having a delightful time marking some 6th year Gryffindor potions essays with plenty of crosses all over them when he suddenly heard a knock at his door. Wondering who on earth would be rude enough to go around knocking on peoples doors at 8 in the morning he was very surprised to find the paler then usual, unconscious form of his godson and favourite pupil Draco Malfoy lying on his doorstep. Being as careful as he could, Severus picked up Draco’s lifeless form and carried it into his living room. After ensuring that Draco would be comfortable when he awoke, Severus went into the kitchen to contact Albus Dumbledore straight away and inform him of this recent and most perplexing development.
This is why Draco came to on a rather lumpy sofa, in rather bad taste with the rest of the décor in the room, and amongst a pile of considerably shoddy potions essays. Feeling relatively fine apart from a slight headache from where he’d hit the back of his head on the stone steps when he’d fainted, Draco made his way into the kitchen of his potions master and head of house to find something to eat. What he did in fact find was a little shocking to him. Severus Snape was busy talking the Albus Dumbledore floating head in a manner that was hovering on being friendly. He stood in the doorway to the kitchen dumbfounded. His godfather was a double agent!
“Good morning Mister Malfoy. Now what brings you to Severus’ house on a fine morning like this?”
Draco was speechless for a moment, silently opening and closing his mouth, trying desperately to think of something to say as he stared at the expectant faces of the professors.
“G-good m-morning professors…” Draco was stammering! He couldn’t believe it, a Malfoy never stammers. But then again, he thought ruefully, he wasn’t really much of a Malfoy anymore.
Snape noticed the sardonic smile that appeared on Draco’s face and furrowed his brows in confusion.
“Is everything alright Draco? You can say anything and it will not go beyond the three of us. Isn’t that right Professor?”
“Absolutely, Severus”
“Everything is perfectly fine, professor,” Draco said resolutely, “but only as long as you class fine as finding out your father is a homophobic bastard that only cares for himself and losing your mother, the one person who truly loved you, to vicious psychopath.”
“So I was correct when I said that Lucius and the other death eaters would go to the manor after they escaped.” Even through the flames of the Floo network Draco could see the head masters eyes twinkling like crazy.
“Are we to understand then, Draco, that Narcissa sacrificed herself when the Dark Lord tried to kill you after you told everyone that you were gay?”
Draco nodded his head to inform his godfather that his surmise was indeed correct whilst swallowing past the lump that had formed in his throat and fighting back the tears that were threatening to form.
“Well in that case Mister Malfoy, I would say that your life may be in peril as you know far to much about the death eaters whereabouts for them to let sleeping dogs lie,” Dumbledore’s head informed him from the fireplace, “and unfortunately it would unsafe for both you and Severus for you to stay here.”
Draco’s hopes sunk. He’d been betting on being able to stay with Snape, he being one of the ever-decreasing number of people in this world that actually cared about him. Now he had no idea where he was going to go, all of his ‘friends’ from school had parents that either were death eaters or were sympathetic to the cause. He really didn’t relish the idea of going into the big wide world on his own, with nobody to help him.
“Mister Malfoy,” Dumbledore said, “before you venture too far into the pit of despair may I at least finish my sentence. Although it will not be safe for you to stay with Severus permanently, you must stay here until a suitable alternative is to found. I have an idea, which would also allow you to keep in close contact with Severus whilst keeping you safe from your father; however, I have a few people that I need to speak to before we settle anything. We must look on the bright side, with you being of age and your father being a known death eater he has no legal control over you and he can’t openly look for you too soon without arousing suspicion. Now, nevertheless, I must leave the two of you as I have an important meeting to attend.”
With that Dumbledore’s head disappeared from the fireplace and Draco settled down to breakfast with his godfather, already feeling better about the whole situation.
