Chapter 5
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
A week later, Hermione was in the infirmary, still unconscious and oblivious to the fact that the man she loved had almost killed her. Harry and Ron took turns keeping a vigil by her side, along with Albus and Minerva. Severus blamed himself for Hermione’s injuries, feeling like he could have prevented them, so he privately stayed by her side during the night when the others were in bed. He knew there was a bigger battle ahead when she woke up and that was trying to break Lucius’ hold on her.
Lucius continued to teach class as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. He even tried to visit Hermione in the infirmary to show his concern as a teacher, but Albus forbade him to come within 100 feet of the infirmary. Ron and Harry both chose to attend the DADA class because they did not want Malfoy to think that he had won.
It was the middle of the night during the second week that Hermione had been in the infirmary and Severus was sitting by the window in Hermione’s private room in the infirmary.
Severus heard soft moans coming from Hermione as he watched her sleep.
“Mmmm,” she moaned and he moved his chair so he could sit next to her. Opening her eyes and trying to focus, she saw Professor Snape sitting next to her. “Where - am - I - ” her words were slow as she whispered.
“Hermione,” he spoke in a soft, silky voice, “you are in the infirmary.” It was better if she did not rber ber why she was there until her strength returned.
“What - happened - to - ” she tried to ask but she fell back asleep. Severus had always remained cold with his feelings and emotions, but as he looked at Hermione lying so peacefully in the bed, he felt an ache he had never felt before and he took Hermione’s hand and held it the rest of the night.
A few days later, when Hermione woke up, Albus was sitting with her.
“Welcome back Hermione,” his words were calming as Hermione turned in his direction. “You gave us quite a scare dear. How do you feel?”
Hermione tried to sit up, but she did not have the strength. “I am - tired, sir.”
“You need to rest Hermione. You have experienced a terrible ordeal.”
“What happened sir?”
“I was hoping that you could tell me,” he looked at her expectantly. Hermione rested her head against the pillow and tried to recall the last thing she could remember.
“I was serving detention with Professor Snape. We heard an explosion and he left. A minute later, his door blasted open and - ” she stopped speaking. She remembered who came through the door, but she would not say.
“Who was at the door Hermione?” asked Albus.
“I - I - do not - remember - ” she said as she remembered what had happened. The tears were falling down the sides of her face as she looked away from the Headmaster.
“Hermione, please do not protect Lucius. I know he did this to you - ”
“He did not do anything!” she said, interrupting Albus.
“Okay Hermione,” Albus said, knowing that she needed her rest. “I will not discuss it for now, but you will need to tell me exactly what happened, okay?” Hermione nodded, but she did not look at the Headmaster because she was thinking about how she was going to leave to find Lucius. ‘Lucius would make it all better,’ she thought. Finding herself too weak to think much more about it, she fell asleep.
Later, Hermione woke up again, to find Madam Pomfrey fussing over her. “Miss Granger, I am so happy to see you awake. I will bring you a food tray; it will make your stronger and help you heal.”
“Yes, Madam Pomfrey, I am very hungry,” Hermione lied knowing that the sooner she healed, the sooner she could be with Lucius. Madam Pomfrey brought Hermione her food and she forced herself to eat.
Returning to take her tray, Madam Pomfrey was pleased, “Miss Granger, you have eaten all of your food. I am proud of you dear.”
“Could you send for Professor Malfoy? I would like to see him, please.”
Poppy was startled by her request, fully aware the Lucius was the one responsible for her injuries, but she responded quickly, “Sorry dear, the Headmaster said no visitors.” This angered Hermione but she smiled in acknowledgement. For the next three days, Hermione continued to eat her food, hoping it would be enough for them to let her see Lucius, but it did not work. During the nights, Severus stayed by her side, as she lay in bed with her eyes open, not able to sleep. She was very restless when she did sleep, only to jerk herself awake as if she was going to miss Lucius sneaking in to see her.
Finally on the fourth day, ‘If Lucius is not allowed to come to me, then I will go to him,’ she thought.
Late that night, Hermione could not sleep again. She looked around carefully to see if she was alone. ‘Finally,’ she thought. Cautiously, she sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up. Giving herself a head rush from being in bed for so long, she grabbed the edge of the mattress to keep herself from falling. As her head cleared, she carefully made her way out of the infirmary toward Lucius’ private rooms, holding onto the wall as she went. Her legs ached, along with her torso, especially her ribs, but this did not stop her. She needed to see Lucius.
Behind her, lurking in the shadows was Severus, who knew exactly where she was going and who knew that, for her healing to begin, he had to let her go and see Lucius. Hermione reached Lucius’ door and opened it. Not knowing that Severus was standing close enough to let the wards down, she entered the room.
“Lucius,” she called out, but he was not in the classroom, so she headed straight for his private rooms and again, Severus let the wards down by quietly murmuring the spelling and waving his wand as Hermione turned the knob and let herself in.
“Lucius, it’s me!” she said as she grabbed onto the wall next to the doorway to support herself.
Lucius walked out of the bathroom, wearing a silk bathrobe that was tied around his lean body. “What do you want?” he sneered, seeing Hermione in the doorway.
“Lucius, I came to see you,” her voice quavered as she made her way to the couch and nearly collapsed on it.
“Miss Granger, I do not know what you are doing here at this hour, but I suggest you leave,” he said sharply.
“Lucius, you love me and I love you. Please, you cannot send me away!” she cried.
“I love you?” he hissed, “Clearly you are demented if you think I would ever love a Mudblood whore!”
“Lucius, I am sorry about what I did. I - I didn’t mean to make you mad. I - will - I will make it up to you, please!” her words were desperate.
Ignoring her, Lucius walked right past her to his bed upon which there lay a woman. He grabbed the woman by the back of her hair and pulled her to him for a long, hard kiss. The tears fell from Hermione’s eyes as she began to cry.
“Lucius,” she said between sobs, “I am sorry! I will do anything you want; please just say you love me!” Hermione began to stagger to the bed.
“Hermione, you are an intelligent Mudblood, so listen carefully. I took what I wanted and I have no more need for a little whore. Leave,” he sneered at her, then turned to the woman in his bed and began to undress her.
“Lucius, please,” Hermione was leaning on the bed, trying to reach for him, “gods, please Lucius, you are my life! I cannot live without you!” and she grabbed his arm, pulling it toward her. Lucius jerked his arm away and, raising it, he brought it down hard and fast toward her face. Before he could strike her, another, stronger arm stopped him. It belonged to Severus.
“YOU - WILL - NEVER - TOUCH - HER - AGAIN!” Severus yelled as he pulled back and nailed Lucius dead center in his face with a closed fist, breaking his nose.
“NO!” screamed Hermione as she tried to stop Snape, but he was already grabbing Lucius by the front of his robe and pulling back, striking him again and again as the blood flew from both Lucius’ nose and Severus’ split knuckles. On the fourth punch, Lucius was knocked out cold. The woman on the bed jumped off and ran to the bathroom, locking herself in.
Hermione was on the floor crying, begging Snape to leave him alone. “Please, Professor Snape, please - ” she was sobbing. Severus let Malfoy go and turned his attention to Hermione. He bent down and carefully picked her up, cradling her in his arms, and knowing it would do no good for him to justify his actions in hitting Lucius, he carried her back to the infirmary in silence as she cried.
Severus gave Hermione a sleeping potion and with some defiance, she drank it, finally succumbing to sleep. Severus stayed the entire night with her, not leaving her side until morning came. Madam Pomfrey came back on duty, relieving Severus who had an appointment with Albus.
