Death Eaters and Aurors

Chapter Five: Death Eaters and Aurors

After kissing Tonks goodnight, Severus apparated to the edge of the Forbidden Forest and ran to his dungeon common room to put on his Death Eater robe. He owled Dumbledore to tell him of the meeting. He once again ran to the Forbidden Forest, careful to avoid any students, and apparated to Malfoy Manner, where the Death Eater meetings were always held.

When he arrived, he realized, to his horror, that he was the last to arrive. Immediately his Dark Mark stopped burning. “Ah, Severus, how good of you to join us,” Voldemort said sarcastically as he kicked Severus in the lower stomach, knocking him to the ground. “What excuse do you have for being late?”

“No excuses, my Lord,” he said painfully, standing up slowly. He soon rejoined the ranks of men in black cloaks and hoods with slits for eyes.

“The reason I have called you all here on such short notice is to announce that Dumbledore has once again formed the Order of the Phoenix.” The group collectively hissed at the mention of Albus Dumbledore, the old wizard considered to be more powerful that the Dark Lord himself. “Thanks to my link with Harry Potter, we have a good idea of where and who they are. They are located somewhere in London. The faces I recognize are Kingsley Shacklebot, ‘Mad Eye’ Moody, Sirius Black…” Severus tuned him out, focusing on closing his mind. “Remus Lupin,” Thank Merlin, now I don’t have to work with him… “… and a witch who can change her appearance. They never say her first name, but her surname is Tonks. I think she would be our best bet for a spy.”

At this Severus lightly gasped, then collected himself. “Something you’d like to share with us Severus? Something you’re hiding? Do you know anything about this girl?” Severus shook his head under his hood, but Voldemort failed to believe him. “Legillimens!” he cried, pointing his wand at Severus. Severus worked hard to close in mind, managing to do so just in time. “You know something. Tell me what it is.”

Thinking quickly on his feet, Severus came up with a believably half-truth. “Her name is Nymphadora Tonks. I had her as a student. Last I heard she was in training to be an Auror. I don’t know anything beyond that. Only that she’s still a child. I don’t think a child would be a good idea for a spy.”

Voldemort walked up to Severus and smacked his face so hard that his hood came off. His face began to welt up and his mouth began to bleed, though he knew better than to talk. “Did I ask you your opinion?” Severus shook his head and pulled his hood on. “I didn’t think so. And since you know more of her than anyone else, you will bring her here on Saturday at midnight, or suffer my wrath. You do remember last June, do you not?”

Severus thought back to when he had missed a Death Eater meeting last June, when the Dark Lord returned, and how the Cruciatus Curse had been used on him. “I remember, my Lord.”

“Good. Don’t forget it,” he said, turning to look at the other men. “Any of you. You may be my servants, but you mean nothing to me. Remember that. You may go.”

“He wants Tonks to be a spy?” Dumbledore asked in disbelief.

“And I’m supposed to deliver her to him Saturday at midnight. I think he’s testing my loyalty… again. After missing that meeting last June, he doesn’t trust me at all. Rightfully so, of course.”

“Of course. Well, obviously, you will have to teach her Occlumency by then.”

“With all due respect, sir, Saturday is only five days away. It’s taken me years to become as adept at is as I am. Wouldn’t it be better for her to suddenly go on vacation?”

“You know as well as I do what the price of another failure from you in. It could be much worse than the Cruciatus Curse. I’ll cover your classes for you this week and Tonks can take the week off from work. I’ll come up with a believable story for her to tell Voldemort. It is imperative that she not give away that you are in the Order, you know the consequences if she does.”

Severus sighed heavily. “I know. I should go to her and begin the lessons now.”

“I would recommend bringing her here. Hogwarts is the safest place for her to learn. And remember to avoid Professor Umbridge.”

“Right, sir.”

Severus apparated to Tonks’ house for the second time that night. He knocked lightly on the door, then harder. After about 10 minutes, he magically unlocked the door and walked in to find Tonks asleep on the couch. He quietly walked over to her and said her name a few times. Quietly at first, then louder. “Tonks… Tonks… TONKS!” he finally shouted, causing her to stir a little. He decided to use drastic measures. He gave his wand a complicated little flick and swish and ice cold water poured out of it.

“What in the name of Merlin!” Tonks shouted.

“You’re very hard to wake up, you know that?” He said, drying her off with an equally complicated flick and swish. He sat down next to her.

“Yes. I am. And I’m cranky when I wake up. So what do you want?” she asked viciously.

He quietly grabbed for her hand, explaining everything. “…and Dumbledore wants you to come to the castle tonight. I’ll wait here while you pack a bag.”

She just sat there stunned for about five minutes before speaking. When she did, it was all very fast and strung together. “Occlumency? Me? I’ll never be able to do it! I’ll get myself killed. Or worse, I’ll get you killed. What if I make a mistake and give away everything about the Order? What if he kills me after tha--”

“If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think he wants to kill you,” Severus said, cutting her off.” I think he wants to use you as a spy. The way Dumbledore uses me.”

“Oh that makes me feel so much better!” she sobbed, falling into his arms. He let her cry, gently stroking her hair. Eventually Tonks fell back asleep and Severus didn’t have the heart to wake her. He gently lay her down and packed a bag for her. When he was assured that he had everything a girl would need for five days, he picked her and the bag up in his arms and apparated them back to the edge of Hogwarts and carried her to his chambers.
