In the Morning
After their bath Hermione and Severus had enjoyed another more relaxed sexual encounter followed by an early morning snack. They lay nestled together afterwards, reluctant to put an end to the kissing and caressing.
“You should sleep,” said Severus at last. “You’re going to have to answer to Minerva at some point tomorrow.”
“Will I tell her about you… us?”
“If you wish to.”
“Do you want me to?”
“I don’t particularly want her to know but if you don’t tell her, the headmaster will. She is his confidante in most things and this is both school and Order related. If anything were to happen to him before the end of term we would need her to collude with us.”
“Will I be able to spend other nights with you?”
“Every night, if you wish to. You will retire to your room at night but after that you can floo straight into my sitting room. My floo has limited access but it will allow any Order member in or out.”
“Well I suppose that means I can afford to waste the rest of this one sleeping then,” she said with a smile.
The two of them fell asleep shortly afterwards.
A burning pain on her breast and the sensation of being crushed awakened Hermione from a deep sleep. She struggled frantically to free herself. Suddenly the pressure was gone and she heard Snape swear violently.
“What was that?” she asked, senses alert for an intruder.
“It was me,” he said apologetically. “I’m being summoned and rather urgently by the feel of it. I imagine the Dark Lord is pissed off about something. When the pain is this intense it helps to put pressure on it. I squeezed you before I knew what I was doing. I have to go. It’s 4.00am. Try to get some sleep. If I’m not back at breakfast time you might want to let the headmaster know I’ve gone. Lumos!”
He clambered out of bed and pulled a shirt from a drawer. He threw it on hastily, followed by a long plain robe. He pulled out the Death Eater cloak and mask from another drawer and made his way into the next room.
Hermione followed him. He turned to her and kissed her hard.
“Don’t worry,” he said. “I’ve always come back so far. I’m going to floo to Hagrid’s. It’s a shorter run from there to the Apparition point. Goodbye.”
He stepped into the grate, shouted his destination, dropped the powder and vanished.
Hermione was left alone in his quarters. She tried going back to his bed but sleep would not return so after an hour she decided to try and find a book to read from the shelves in his sitting room.
By 8.00 he had not returned and her anxiety was iasinasing. Severus rarely missed breakfast even after he had been summoned. It was time to alert Professor Dumbledore that he was gone. She needed to put something on in order to use the floo. It was then that she realised that her clothes and wand were all in the Potions classroom. He had been in a hurry to tend to her and the clothes had been forgotten in the rush. She didn’t want to leave his rooms in case he came back so she wandered into his bedroom to find something to wrap herself in. The first thing she saw was the shirt he had worn yesterday and his gown. She put them both on and knelt before the floo.
Before she could do anything however, Dumbledore’s head appeared in the flames.
“Ah Miss Granger,” he said. “I was wondering if I could speak to Professor Snape.”
“He’s not here sir,” she answered. “He was summoned four hours ago and he hasn’t come back yet.”
“Ah, never mind. Could you join me for a moment? I won’t keep you long. I can see that you’re anxious.”
“I’m not properly dressed Professor. We left my belongings in the lab last night and I can’t get them without my wand.”
“You seem adequately covered to me Miss Granger. This is not a formal gathering.”
“All right.”
The headmaster’s head disappeared from the flames and Hermione took a handful of powder to travel.
When she reached the office Harry and Professor McGonagall were already there. Hermione was extremely conscious about the way she was dressed and drew the robe tighter around herself.
“I see!” observed Professor McGonagall.
Hermione cringed.
“Well I hope he was at least gracious towards you child,” she said.
“I have no complaints,” she responded. “Things are working out much better than I had hoped. Are we waiting for anyone else Professor Dumbledore?”
“Not at the moment Miss Granger. I am calling a meeting of senior Order members this afternoon. Hopefully Severus will have found his way back to us by then and can give us some information. It is unusual for Voldemort to detain him during the daytime. This reinforces my concern about tonight’s events.”
“You still haven’t told us why we’re here,” said Harry.
“I’m sorry. I will be meeting with other staff members after breakfast. Last night twenty-two students left the premises and have not returned.”
“Do you mean they were kidnapped?” asked Hermione.
“I’m afraid not. It is my belief that they left of their own accord to meet with their master.”
“You mean they’ve gone to Voldemort?” said McGonagall bleakly.
“That is what I believe.”
“Is he building up his army?” said Harry.
“I think so. It seems to suggest that the final confrontation will be sooner rather than later.”
“Which puts the school under threat,” said Minerva.
“Yes. I’m afraid that is the case.”
“How long has Severus been gone?”
“Just over four hours now. His mark started burning at 4.00am exactly and he was out to Hagrid’s within five minutes. He said he could run to the Apparition point quicker from there.”
“The children had gone by then,” said Dumbledore. “I was awakened at around 2.30 by one of the portraits which saw them leaving with brooms. I did not disturb Severus because of the other matter.”
“Who has gone?” asked Hermione.
“All the Slytherins who are seventeen and over with the exception of Millicent Bullstrode. The other three were Miss Mallory, Mr Smith and Mr Coren from Ravenclaw.”
“Why not Millicent?”
“The other Slytherins all have a family member currently associated with Voldemort. Millicent’s father was killed by him before she was born.”
“I never knew that,” said Harry.
“It is not something she broadcasts. It would have put her in an awkward position in her house if everyone had known. Severus has always taken care to mentor her privately and it seems to have paid off. I’ll call the staff meeting after breakfast. Hermione, I imagine you would prefer to wait for Severus in his quarters. I can have food sent there for you.”
“Thank you Professor. I’ll need to pop to my rooms to get some clothes first and then I’ll go and wait for him to come home.”
“Hermione am I to understand you and Professor Snape did not manage to conclude your business?” said Professor McGonagall in concern.
“We decided that we… we wanted to… to erm…”
“I think Hermione is trying to tell you that she and Severus feel they would like to continue to explore their newfound closeness. Is that not so?”
“Yes Professor.”
“And you intend to allow this Albus?”
“Yes. We forced them to give themselves to each other for the greater good. It is not our place to deny them their emotional response to the situation. Hermione is legally an adult and Severus has been alone for far too long.”
“Well if you put it that way I suppose I will accept the situation. I must point out that it sets an undesirable precedent.”
“Historically speaking it is not a precedent. Gryffindor himself chose a bride from the student body and took her out of school to marry her and he was not the last to do so.”
“That was a long time ago. Times have changed.”
“Indeed they have Minerva and I expect both Hermione and Severus to exercise discretion until NEWTs are over in, I believe, ten weeks time. In the meantime only Order members will be aware of the situation. We ought to make an appearance at breakfast now. Hopefully we can delay making a formal announcement about the situation to the whole school until this evening.”

It was nearly midday when Severus flooed into his quarters. Hermione had set up to work on his dining table and was in the middle of a History of Magic essay.
She realised almost immediately that he had not survived the experience unscathed. He was moving stiffly and had a cut on his forehead that was scabbed over. She over to him but only held his hand fearing that she might hurt him. He was breathing heavily and his robes were stained with something.
“I’m glad you stayed,” he said, bending to peck her on the cheek. I just need to clean up a little and then I’d like you to come with me to see the headmaster. The news I have to give him involves you.”
He made his way into the bathroom leading her along with him. “I’m going to shower quickly,” he said, stripping off his robe and shirt. “As you can see my physical injuries are not life threatening.”
She looked at his naked body as he stepped into the shower and turned on the warm water. She could see no marks so if the stains were blood it was not his.
“Did he give you ‘Crucio’,” she asked.
“He did. I’m in much better shape then I ought to be. I have your potion to thank for that. At this rate I’ll be totally recovered in an hour or so. Could you sort me some clothes?”
About ten minutes later the two of them flooed up to the headmaster’s office. He was alone and showed great relief at seeing his spy home safely.
“Headmaster,” announced Severus. “I have bad news.”
