Chapter 5: The Dark Room and the Blood-Red Dress

Molly returned in just a second to bring some toast and tea to Ashley and Ron.
Though Ashley said she was not hungry, Molly insisted that the girl eat,
because she had not eaten in days and was so weak. Ashley smiled, just happy
that she was safe and actually had someone there to insist that she eat. After
she was satisfied that Ron would have her eat, Molly quietly exited the room.

Ron sat by the couch, quietly munching on his toast, while beside him, Ashley
did the same. After about 3 bites, though Ashley set the toast down, looking
more tired than when she first woke up, Ron noticed.

“You don’t have to tell me now, you know?” Ron told the girl, looking up into
her exausted eyes.

“No, I am fine. Anyways, you heard what your father said\" (though he was quite
sure that he hadn’t), \"they need to know what happened to me in case it might
have to do with dark forces. I know the war that your people are in right now.
Though I have no clue what they would want with me.”

“Well, you are a squib…”
“No! Don’t call me that, I hate that word!

Ron looked at Ashley in surprise, she seemed so angry.

“I am sorry, I snapped, angel,” she said gently, “It just reminds me when my
father first figured out that I was not the witch he had hoped for. I am not a
witch, I am not a squib, I am not a muggle, I am just Ashley, alright?” She
said looking into Ron’s eyes, almost daring him to disagree with her.

“Alright.”

Ashley turned and looked down at the blanket covering her body, anartearted
fussing with the ends, not even sure how to start telling her story to her
angel. She was scared he would be ashamed of her.

“Umm, I am ready to tell you, I mean if you are ready to listen.” She reached
out her hand to him. He looked at her blankly for a minute. Did she want him
to hold it? Ron wasn’t sure what to do for a minute. If she was any girl at
school he would have laughed in her face. Since the girls had started noticing
him, he had learned that showing any girl too tender of feelings, such as
holding hands in public, he would look unavailable, and he wanted to always be
ready for a new girl.

This girl had the saddest eyes though, beautiful but sad. She was not some girl
in school. And she had called him her angel, he owed it to her. He took her
hand and looked up at her. A faint smile came to her face, as he heard her
take a deep breath.

\"I had just got back from my 15th birthday party. It was really fun! My friends
took me out to dinner and movie, and then we went to my best friend Dominique\'s house and
had a small party. I walked into my house and I knew something was wrong. My
parents weren\'t waiting up for me; they always waited up for me to get home. It
was then that I saw a green light coming from my parents room. I ran up the
stairs and went into their room, and they were…they were laying there…they
were...”

Ron saw the girl struggling with her emotions, and squeezed her hand to
let her know that he was there.

“They were laying on the bed, all bloody, too much blood, I knew right away
that they were dead. Then I saw the people in the room. Two of them, holding
wands like my father. They had had them pointed at my parents, but when I came
in they quickly turned them at me.\"

“Ashley, “Ron said quickly, “what did these men look like?”
“I couldn’t tell, they had long black robes and masks. It was like they were
dressed up for Halloween. That is all I could think, angel! My parents were
laying there dead, and that is all I could think!\"
“You can stop, you don’t have to keep going, I know it hurts…”
“No, I need to let someone else know! I can’t keep this all in my head, I need
to get it out!”
“Then I will share your burden!” Ashley looked surprised as she turned her
eyes up to look at him. Ron looked back at her equally surprised. He was not
even sure where that came from. Did he want to share her burden? He didn’t
think so.

“Alright. Then they said a spell. It must have made me pass out or something
like that, because the next thing I know, I was in a dark room. It was so
dark, I couldn’t see anything, but I felt something. I wasn’t in my jeans and
sweatshirt anymore, I was in a full dress, I could tell by feeling it, that is
was probably very beautiful and intrically made, and my hair, it was up in
braids or something, but before I had time to finish investigating, the door
opened and I could see another man in black. I was so scared! I tried to run
away, but there was just a wall there. The man grabbed me and pulled me into
the hall. It was beautiful and had mirrors everywhere. I saw myself then.
Even though I was angry and scared, I noticed how I looked. The dress, it was
beautiful, but it was deep red, it looked like blood, and my lips were painted
the same color. I never saw myself look so…corrupt. I can’t explain it, Ron.\"

“No, it is ok, I know what you mean.”
“That is when I saw the thing. He stood like a man, but his face looked like a
snake. His eyes were the color of my d.” R.” Ron gasped, he knew exactly who
she was talking about. Ashley looked at him curiously, but kept going, wanting
to get all the horrible images out of her head as soon as she could.

“The man holding me had me stand in front of the snake man. He spoke, in a
horribly low voice...” Ashley looked away.
“What did he say to you?”
“He told me he had been waiting a long time for me, and now that his
transformation was going to be complete, I would be his princess. The one who
would bring glory. I didn’t know what he was talking about, I was so confused,
and then he pointed his wand at me, and said it was a shame that I looked so
beautiful, because he was going to have to teach me patience and tolerance.
Then he said a spell and I was in so much pain, angel, and I couldn’t make it
stop, it wouldn’t stop, then I felt people around me. It was the men dressed in
black, they surrounded me and they were kicking me, I couldn’t get them away,
that is the last thing I remember. Next thing I knew I woke up and was looking
into your face.

Ron hated the tears that came down her face. He hated the men that had
caused them. He hated that she looked at him with so much need. He hated the
confusion that he was feeling, when clearly the only thing that mattered was
her safety. He had to go on instinct, he couldn’t overthink his feelings, so
he did what his heart told him to do. He took her in his arms and held her and
held her, and held her…………….
