Snape lay in bed that night after washing up and changing into his pajamas and thought about dinner with Hermione. She had taken him to an Indian restaurant down the street from her flat. Her home was conveniently located close to several dining establishments as well as a few shops – a bookstore, tailor shop, laundry, post, and video store, were a few he noticed – yet they were far enough away from the tourist areas, that it wasn’t overly crowded or noisy.
They started off a bit stiffly, as she began by suggesting a schedule. After breakfast, they would spend their time before lunch working on the web site. Between lunch and dinner, she left the lab free to him. After dinner, was free time; she said she would probably work in the lab on most nights and let him know he was welcome to work down there as well if she was there. She had said something to the affect of “it would be nice to work with someone around,” and she had quickly blushed at her own words. He had a feeling she didn’t mean to say that out loud. He also got the feeling that she may have been quite lonely.
He couldn’t imagine her being lonely. She always had her two bodyguards around, so with some reluctance, he asked about Potter and Weasley then and quickly regretted it when he saw her face fall. She recovered quickly, and with a straight face told him that she didn’t hear that much from them anymore. She received birthday cards and holiday greetings, but otherwise her owls to them went unanswered over the last year. When he cocked an eyebrow at her upon hearing this, she just waved it off saying they were all busy with their lives right now. Through Mrs. Weasley, she told him, she found out that Potter, who was now an auror, and the young Weasley female were talking about setting a wedding date. They had been engaged since Ginny had graduated. Weasley was still moving from one flavor of the month to the next, wrapped up in the groupies that came with being the keeper for the Chudley Cannons. She told him all of this feigning a look enthusiasm that she was happy her friends were doing so well. He wasn’t fooled for a minute.
Quickly changing the subject, they talked of the current theories that they had both recently read in the different potions’ publications. Soon, he found he was honestly enjoying himself. An evening that started off stunted and a bit uncomfortable quickly turned into a meeting of minds.
He remembered the question he wanted to ask her earlier about her potions work then. She said that her work was all independent research and contracting. She had received her Mistress’ title just this last spring. She admitted that she made her money doing web design, working freelance for a couple of larger design firms. The house she inherited from her great aunt when she passed away two years ago which saves in her overall cost of living. She had never had any intentions nor desire to work for the ministry, and she had too many ideas she wanted to play with before thinking about working full-time for a potions’ firm.
She told him some of her ideas for using muggle science to identify the exact component in a potion ingredient so that it could be used in its place to increase the potency of the potion. She was beginning her testing with some of the lower use medical potions. If she progressively got positive results, she eventually wanted to try the theory on Wolfsbane Potion. Snape found himself getting excited for her, and decided, to himself, to try to spend time in the lab when she was down there. He found the idea of chemistry to be a bit exciting!
After dinner, she had ordered two cups of Indian tea. Next thing he knew, there were talking about everything under the sun and laughing while taking sips of their tea and trying to identify each of the spices that were added. Ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black peppercorn, khus-khus, and fennel seeds were identified quickly enough, and after they finished their tea, they headed home.
The night was clear and brisk, but not too cold. She asked how everyone was at Hogwarts and he quickly filled her in on the current castle gossip.
“I think Dobby misses his homemade hats and socks, though,” he said, with a grin on his face. She peeked at him out of the corner of her eye and then looked back straight ahead, her cheeks going a shade pinker before she smiled and shook her head. Oh, the follies of youth!
She really was a remarkable girl. ‘No, Severus,’ he reminded himself. ‘Not a girl. She’s most definitely a woman.’ He really hoped he could make it through the next few weeks without making a complete fool of himself. For the first time in two decades, Severus Snape realized he might be developing a crush on someone!

Hermione looked at herself in the mirror, brushing her teeth. The purple under her eyes were pretty dominant now that she washed off her makeup. She had trouble sleeping quite often, but last night had been tough. She stayed up a good portion of the night wandering around the house, making sure it was spic and span for her guest.
Tonight at dinner, she had been surprised by Severus twice. The first time, it wasn’t a pleasant surprise when he asked about her absent friends. It didn’t hurt her that she didn’t get to see them as often anymore. They all chose their lives and lifestyles and she liked hers. She didn’t mind being alone, but she did get lonely. About a year ago, they both became too busy to reply to her owls. It had been about 10 months since she’d seen them. At least Mrs. Weasley had kept in touch, as well as sending along the occasional letter from Ginny, otherwise she wouldn’t have a clue what’s going on with anyone.
The second surprise from Severus was much more enjoyable and it took her mind off of everything except for the two of them at that table. The surprise? Why, Severus laughed! And what a glorious laugh he has. She decided it was one of the most beautiful sounds she’d ever heard and she hoped she would be hearing more of that laugh over the next few weeks. Even if she had to juggle for him, she wanted to hear that laugh again.
After the boring business of talking schedules, and the uncomfortable business of explaining to him that her best friends basically abandoned her, they had a great night. It was exciting to talk to someone about something you love as much as they do potions research and to explain your ideas and have them not only received well, but finding a cheerleader for your success.
Two minutes of up and down brushing, she spit and rinsed, wiped her face on the towel, and headed for bed. She picked up her wand and added a silencing charm. The last thing she wanted to do was to wake Severus in the middle of the night. That is, if she could come down from her giddiness enough to sleep! She was in fact feeling so good, she realized that if she did manage to fall asleep, it might be one of the first un-potion induced good night sleeps she’d gotten in a long time.
After going over her conversations with Severus for a third time in her head, she finally rolled to her side, and did just that; had a good night’s sleep.
