Chapter 4: When In The Dark

Severus Snape exited his bedroom with a yawn. He couldn’t help but smile at the blond who was asleep on his couch, a pout still on his face. Draco wasn’t a horrible kid. The way he acted could be solely blamed on his parents.

While many believed that Draco had been left to himself to grow up, nothing could be further from the truth. Lucius loved his son with everything that was in him. Narcissa doted on him as if he were incapable of even the smallest task by himself.

Draco had grown up the pride and joy of the family so coming to Hogwarts and being denied things came as a brutal shock. Much was the same with the other Slytherin’s parents. They all loved their children very much. The difference in them was solely their beliefs.

Draco and the other Slytherins were punished for picking on the Weasleys for their lack of wealth and unkempt appearance. Yet the Weasleys were never punished for accusing the Slytherins of being death eaters in training. Yes, there was the expectation that they too would take the mark but they would not be forced just like the Order’s children were not to be forced into joining either.

He placed a blanket over his godson and gave him one last look. He then turned his gaze on the door that was across the room from him. In there was a boy that he had thought he had known. Quietly he walked over to the door. A little voice could he heard on the other side but the words were in distinguishable.

He opened the door to find the little boy talking to his puppy. Mumbled ‘I love you’s’ came in between the hugs the boy was giving his toy. His green eyes snapped up when the door opened and his words stopped instantly.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you up.”

“You didn’t.” Then some silence. Harry’s hand began to rub his other arm just under the sleeve so Snape couldn’t see what he doi doing.

“My Uncle didn’t send me here did he?” Snape knew this was coming.

“No Mr. Potter he didn’t.”

“I didn’t think so. Things are really different here,” Severus couldn’t help but smile slightly though the little boy didn‘t see it. It was easy to forget this boy was the son of his rival. He hated James Potter with a passion. The elder Potter had been cruel to him over the years.

He hated Lilly Evans to because she was insufferable. A bit like Granger she was, always knowing the answer and acting like a self righteous Gryffindor. She was just as judgmental as the her other friends. When Harry had come to Hogwarts he acted the exact same way but now at the age of seven he didn’t hold any prejudices in the world.

“Why am I here then?” The question was asked with such uncertainty.

“That is a hard question nswenswer.” and that was the truth. Where could he even begin. He could tell the boy the truth but that seemed to be a bit much for the kid. Maybe he would only tell him some things. “First off you have to understand that magic is real.”

“Ok” Blind acceptance.

“This castle is Hogwarts. Children such as yourself come here to learn the basics of magic.”

“Is that why I am here?”

“No you are to young yet to attend classes but you will be staying here for a while.”

“Do I go back to my Uncle after this.”

“Would you want to go back?” Harry looked at him in surprise and Severus could tell he had never been given a choice on something.

“My Uncle needs me, he tells me so everyday.”

“Is that before or after he hits you?”

“You sound like my teacher.” Severus found this mildly amusing as he was in fact the boys teacher only the child didn’t know that yet.

“And how do I do that?”

“She said it wasn’t right to have my Uncle hit me and she told him so. My Uncle gave her some money though and I never saw her again, not that it mattered.” Snape looked at the little boy in shock. An adult had been paid off to ignore this boys pain. It was disturbing.

“No one will do that to you here Harry.” Harry leaned toward the elder man and rested his head against the dark man’s chest. All of his Uncle’s friends liked when he did this.

“They all say that” Severus’s thoughts stopped at this and was about to question further when a disgruntle Draco entered the room.

“That couch is a torture device,” he moaned as he tried to pop his back. Severus winced at the sound but did not offer the blond any condolences. He was far from forgetting his anger at his godson. In fact it was time that Draco started to take responsibility for his actions.

“Good to see you awake, Draco. I have an appointment with the Headmaster in ten minutes so you are going to take Harry to get something to eat and then perhaps give him a tour of the castle and grounds.” His tone left no room for argument. He looked down at the child whom was leaning against him. “I’ll talk to you later, Harry.” With that Snape departed leaving Draco and Harry looking at each other.

Albus Dumbledore was sitting at his desk reviewing the files of some of the seventh year students that were eligible for honors upon their completion ofwartwarts. He was interrupted of his task when Professor Snape walked in a grim expression on his face.

“Good day, Severus. Is it already ten?”

“You know it is Albus so let’s not bother ourselves with light conversation.”

“We were wrong weren’t we?”

“It would appear so Headmaster. Harry was most definitely abused of that I am certain.” Dumbledore shook his head sadly.

“How bad is it?”

“From what I can tell there are not that many bruises on him which surprised me because the boy acts like being abused is an everyday thing. He lacks the markings of intense abuse though…” Severus trailed off at a loss.

“I noticed you were none to pleased with your Godson last night. What did Draco do now?”

“It seemed that he along with some of his other year mates found it amusing to lock Harry in a closet for a couple hours so they wouldn’t have to watch him.” Dumbledore’s face looked saddened.

“He is blinded by his hatred.” Severus felt the need to defend the blond.

“Potter was just as spiteful as Draco.”

“I know that, Severus. I am not completely blind to the boy’s faults.”

“We were blind to his past however. How could we have missed something so large.”

“Harry is a devious boy, but I don’t think he kept this secret by himself.” Severus snapped to attention, hardly able to accept what the Headmaster was implying.

“Their his best friends surely they would have come forward with something like this. They are not complete dunderheads, though I loathe to admit it.”

“I think it is time we had a conversation with Mr. Weasley and Ms. Granger.” Dumbledore sent a house elf after the two. Mean while the two men sat there in silent contemplation.

Draco Malfoy was beyond annoyed. He had to practically force feed Harry during breakfast and now he had to walk all about the castle with the brat just to keep his Godfather appeased. Harry was following him meekly afraid to upset the blond. This action was only infuriating Draco more.

They had begun the tour of the castle around noon. Draco took Harry every where from the highest tower to the lowest dungeon class room. Harry just stared around in wonder at all of the paintings and stairways. The castle was alive and it fascinated the little boy to know end.

Finalavinaving covered most of the castle Draco decided to walk around the grounds before the sun set. Currently they were standing in front of the quidditch pitch. Harry was still following him at a distance, head down.

“I’m not going to kill you Potter so you can stop acting like it.” Harry didn’t say anything. Draco tired of walking plopped down on the steps and just stared at the green eyed boy getting a good look at him. “You aren’t what I thought you would be.”

“How am I supposed to be?” Harry looked truly interest in what Draco had to say. The question made Draco think for a moment and for the first time he didn’t answer the boy in a bitter tone.

“Well you are annoying, like I knew you would be, and every one still loves you. It seems you have even have won my Godfather over. You aren’t as arrogant as I thought you would be though.”

“I don’t like love.” Draco looked at the boy incredulously. Draco didn’t know how many had told the boy they loved him. Draco didn’t know how badly love hurt every night locked in a dark room.

“Gryffidor’s Golden-boy doesn’t like love?!? And why is that?” The boy just looked at him with a haunted expression that bothered Draco as much as the once bruised fist had. “It’s getting late and I’m hungry.” Draco rose from the steps and began to walk back to the castle Harry walking just a bit closer behind him.

Ron and Hermione were quite a bit surprised when the Headmaster’s house elf had entered the library searching them out. Now they found themselves facing not just the Professor Dumbledore but also Professor McGonnagal and Professor Snape.

“Forgive me for intruding on your weekend but I have a few question for you both, lemon drop?” Hermione turned down the candy but Ron took a few and popped them in his mouth. Snape rolled his eyes at the red head.

“Does this have to do with Harry, sir?” Hermione, always the perceptive one, waited for the headmasters answer.

“As a matter of fact Ms. Granger it does. I assume you both saw the bruise on Mr. Potter’s cheek when he was de-aged.” Both shook their heads in an affirmative manner. “We were wondering if you would have any idea on how such a small boy would get such an injury.”

“We didn’t know Harry when he was seven , Professor,” Hermione was the one to answer while Ron chose to lower his eyes to the floor.

“He had other bruises too. Did you know that? He seems to be quite submissive,” Snape’s voice cut into the two Gryffidor’s minds.

“Why would we know any thing?” Ron’s voice shook just slightly. All three adults knew that the two knew something they were not letting on to.

“It was only wishful thinking Mr. Weasley, no need to get defensive. I shall be going Headmaster, I want to make sure Harry’s bags are packed.” Dumbledore looked to Severus already understanding the game the Potion’s master intended to play.

“Pack his bags? Where is he going?” Hermione looked at Snape, brown eyes dark with worry.

“Why he is going back with his relatives until an antidote can be made.” Both teenagers paled.

“You can’t do that”

“Hermione stop!”

“No Ron, you know he can’t go back.” The two stared at each other for a moment before Ron lowered his head into his hands.

“His Uncle”

“What was that Ms. Granger?” It was the first time the Gryffindor head of house had spoken the entire meeting.

“The bruise on his cheek, the other ones too, They came from his Uncle.”

“How long was this going on?” Ron looked up at the headmaster.

“For his whole life. He doesn’t remember when it actually started.”

“How could you two keep this a secret! I would have thought the two of you had at least some amount of common sense. Never have I been so disappointed in two members of my house.” By now Hermione was crying.

“You don’t understand. He begged us not to tell.” None of the adults eyes softened at this.

“He was so afraid that some one would find out and tell. It wasn’t that bad either, just a few punches. The marks on him were never that bad. If they were we would have told.” Ron looked at each person in the room desperate to be understood. Snape’s voice broke the silence that had settled around the room.

“Did you ever think that maybe he never even told you the whole truth. That maybe it was more than just a few punchesr dir did you just ignore the possible truths so you would be able to sleep better at night.”

Hermione’s cry became a bit louder and Ron held her trying to ignore what Snape had just said. It had hit to close to home and now they sat in grim realization. To him it seemed the room had gotten a bit colder.

Dinner had gone slightly better than breakfast as both boys were hungry and Harry seemed more willing to cooperate. Now they were sitting in Draco’s room.

“Alright Potter sit down and pay attention.” The boy obediently sat. “This is my room so we are going to have to set down some rules,” he walked over to his bed. “This is mine and you will not touch it.” He then walked over to his night stand.

“This is mine, don’t touch it either.” This continued on for about ten minutes as Draco seemed to want to make sure he pointed out each and every one of his items. Currently he was at the door pointing at his cloak which was hanging on a hook. “This is also mine…”

“And I am not gonna touch it.”

“Amazing you aren’t a complete dunderhead. Now you are going to sleep on this cot right here.” Draco stared at the cot waiting for Harry to get into it. Harry just looked at him confused.

“How come I’m not sleeping in your bed?” Draco looked at him incredulously.

“Just shut up and go to sleep Potter. I can not handle any more of your stupid questions.” Draco went to lay in his bed and Harry went to his cot. Within an hour both were asleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harry was sitting on the living room couch. The room was full of smoke and laughter. His Aunt and cousin were currently with his Aunt Marge. Uncle Vernon had stayed behind due to business meetings and such. Harry sat on the couch squished between Mr. Carter and Mr. Douglas. Both had been drinking quite heavily.
Mr. Douglas picked him up and put him on his lap.
Hands roamed over him.
Lips pressed against his neck, face, hands.
“So pretty, such a love.”
Faces every where, all their eyes turned to him like he was a show piece.
He was a show piece.
“Don’t let this one get away Vernon.”
His Uncle was there looking at him.
“Not a chance. I’ll never let him get away”
Harry shot awake, shaking like a leaf. Draco was still fast asleep so Harry laid down trying to calm his breathing. It didn’t matter what these people here said. His Uncle was right. He would never get away. So the little boy stayed awake the entire night clutching his puppy afraid of every thing.
