Severus woke up several hours later in his own bed, wrapped in a warm blanket. He didn’t remember crawling to the bed, though he must have, and showered as well. He felt clean and remarkably fresh considering what had happened. He glanced at the clock and moaned. It was only 7:34pm. He threw off the blanket and rolled onto his feet.
He was surprised by how warm the floor was as he walked naked into the living room to clean up the mess Malfoy had left in his wake. He was even more surprised to find the room in perfect order. Dobby usually only came in once a day, and since he had been there in the morning, Severus hadn’t expected the little house-elf back until the following day. He shrugged and guessed that he must have done it before he went for his shower.
Just as he turned to go for another shower before dressing, there was a knock on his door. He grabbed his dressing robe from a hook on the wall and covered himself quickly before answering. He knew it wouldn’t be Malfoy returning already, but had no idea who it could be. Albus always left him alone on Saturdays.
He blinked as Albus smiled at him. “Good morning, my boy,” he said cheerfully. Severus eyed him suspiciously, the words not quite registering. “Coming to breakfast?”
“Breakfast?” Severus asked incredulously.
“Yes,” Albus responded, his twinkling eyes surveying him with concern. “The first meal of the day for most people…”
“What time is it?” Severus was becoming very confused. He never slept late, and certainly never slept for nearly 20 hours before, no matter what had happened.
“It’s past 7:30.”
“Am?!”
“Yes. Severus is something wrong? Are you all right?” The headmaster’s eyes had stopped twinkling as he watched the confusion play in Severus’ eyes. He was more concerned than before. Severus’ never looked confused about anything, always seeming to know exactly what was going on.
“I’m fine,” he said distractedly, trying to remember what had happened after Malfoy left. It was all a dark void. He couldn’t even recall having dreamt over night, which was extremely odd.
“I’ll be up in a few minutes,” Severus said, closing the door in Albus’ shocked face. He looked at his calendar as he dressed and saw that it was, indeed, Sunday morning. He shook his head and stopped worrying about it. He actually felt like he had had a decent sleep for the first time in years and wasn’t going to question it further.
Sitting down to breakfast, Severus glared out over the room. He was surprised by the stares he was receiving from the Gryffindor table. Not only was Potter watching his every move, but his two cohorts were, as well. He supposed Potter had told them about his display of weakness and they were now waiting to see him fall. He nearly lost his appetite as he realized they probably didn’t have long to wait.
He swallowed a shudder as Malfoy’s last words came back to him. If he didn’t perform better for the highest ranking Death Eater, Malfoy was going to tell the Dark Lord that he was no longer of use to them. Since their Master was already having doubts about him, He wouldn’t hesitate to kill him. It was only by Malfoy’s good graces that Severus was still alive now. Malfoy had stood up for him time and again just to keep his private slave alive for his own uses.
Severus closed his eyes and concentrated on breathing until he calmed down again, his heart returning to a normal beat. When he opened his eyes, he found not only Potter and his friends watching him, but Albus and Minerva as well. He forced himself to eat quickly, then excused himself to return to the sanctuary of his dungeons, where he spent the rest of the day grading papers and keeping his mind strictly clear of Malfoy.
