Meeting Severus

I grovel at the feet of my reviewers…*offers them imaginary sweets*

Priest: I am sorry you don’t like the long hair thing but when I first my partner he had hair down to the small of his back and I loved it, so I am recreating that in Harry

Chapter Five

As Harry woke and headed for breakfast in the great hall he noticed what he had not seen the night before. Many of the students glared at him or muttered about him being a ‘defective’ as he walked past. Gryffindor seemed to hate him and he knew that he would have to be on his guard whenever he had classes with them. Ravenclaw looked as though he was a puzzle they were trying to figure out, only half of them showed dislike for his decision. Hufflepuff were a bit surprised but in the end decided he was only doing what made him happy therefore they were happy.

After a while Draco and the rest of the gang came in as well.

“Sleep well, Harry?” Asked Blaise, wondering how any person could be awake at this time of morning.

“Wonderful,” Harry replied honestly, “certainly a sleep in compared to the Dursleys.”

They settled down to a lovely breakfast, Harry piling his plate up with all his favourites, something he could only have at Hogwarts.

“Mails in” someone further down the table commented. Harry noticed it was a good looking boy, most likely from seventh year. Noticing his interest the boy introduced himself.
“Damien Nott” The boys shook hands and Harry realized he was on the Slytherin quidditch team, a chaser.
“Nice to meet you, as I am sure you know already, I am Harry”

Just as he said this, Hedwig landed in front of him. The letter looked normal to most but those around him noticed what he ad not.

“Look at the seal; it’s from the Dark Lord!” Blaise whispered so that no one could overhear them. Harry opened the letter showing no surprise, which certainly made the other students, with the exception of Draco, wondering about this twist in events.

My Son,

I do hope you don’t mind the affectation, but as you so said, it does seem most appropriate don’t you think? Congratulations on you resorting, you are finally where you should have been so long ago. I am happy that you have found some friends in your new house and I have made sure that Severus will not cause you any troubles adjusting. I think a celebration is in order. I will arrange a date and invite your friends when the time comes. Don’t worry, the muggle torture can be forgotten if only for an evening. If you wish to keep up correspondence of some nature during the school year I do not object, as long as you are careful about it.

Yours, Father

“Hmm..that is interesting,” he said as he handed the letter to Draco, seeing the boys curiosity. Draco’s eyebrows rose at the titles but he said nothing, placing it away in his mind for further investigation later. He finished reading the letter and gave it back to Harry, who immediately burned it and swept the ashes away from the table. Looking up to the Staff table, he noticed two enquiring sets of eyes, those of Dumbledore and Professor Snape.

As soon as he had finished eating said professor came to his side.

“Potter, as head of your house I wish to speak with you.” Harry knew what was coming and went quietly with his professorSnapSnape’s study. Snape had spent the previous evening concerned over this change in Harry and what it meant for him. Harry could see a glimmer of fear in the mans eyes as he shut the door behind him.

“Don’t worry professor,” he said quickly, blocking off the questions. “I have not joined Voldemort. I have not mentioned your loyalties to anyone. I think in fact that it would be best if I kept your secrets and you kept mine.”

Severus realized exactly what the boy was trying to say. In effect, he was in the boys clutches, if he kept quiet about the boys activities to Dumbledore then Harry would not tell of his betrayal to Voldemort. This indeed would work for both of them.

“However,” Harry continued, “I would like to know exactly where your loyalty really does lie.”

‘Hmm..perhaps the boy is smarter than I thought he was’ Severus mused. He indicated for the boy to take a seat and grabbed some cigarettes from his desk drawer. For once he did not care if a student saw him with such muggle devices; he certainly needed one for this conversation. When Harry saw what it was his professor was holding his eyes widened in surprise. He took out a similar packet from his robes pocket.

“You don’t mind if I do the same, do you sir?”

“Of course not, Harry” he said, stressing the use of his first name and placing an ashtray on the table between them.

“Oh, come on, Severus,” Harry said, deciding turn about was fair play,” You may not have to be mean to me, but can you stop trying to play nice? Dumbledore might notice your little act and wonder why.”

“True, look I still don’t like you but I shall refrain from being ‘mean’ to you all right?”

“Perfectly all right, Severus.”

“Now, as to my duties as your head of house. If you have any problems you may come to me. I do try not to take any points from my own house but believe me, if you push the issue I will. Also, a mutual acquaintance of ours,” he said with one eyebrow raised questioning, “has asked that I help you learn whatever I can teach you. This does include potions and the dark arts. Know this Harry, I will teach you what you ask me to, but I expect this to be kept secret. I do not need any more trouble in my life than I already have.”

“Accepted. I will speak to you further about his once I have figured out my weekly schedule. Now back to that question of loyalty….”

“Where, may I ask, do you think it lies, just out of interest?”

“Last year I was speaking with Ron and Hermione about your loyalty. Ron seemed to believe that you were not on the side of light. Hermione trusted that you were because as she so said it “Dumbledore trusts him, and if we can’t trust Dumbledore cantcant trust anyone” (p.490, OOTP) In realizing that I cannot trust the headmaster I spent some time thinking this over. My guess is that you are on both sides, holding no more inclination towards either.”

“Very astute of you, Harry. You are correct, but I think, as you did say before, that we keep each others trust in these matters. May I ask of your loyalties Harry?”

“Of course, Severus, they are currently the same as yours. As to if that will change, we shall see.”

“Yes, we shall”

The two settled in their chairs and spent a few minutes talking of politics and other common interests until it was time for the first class of the year. As Harry walked out of the study he realized that perhaps Professor Snape was not as bad as he had originally thought and felt a thirst to prove himself to the man that had hated him for so many years.
