“Daddy, wake up today’s the day.” The energetic eleven year old cheered as she bounced onto the bed.

“Five more minutes sweetie.” Draco groaned.

“Dad we have to go.” She pouted.

“Alright, I’m up, I’m up. Go get your things I’ll meet you downstairs.”

In a flash she was gone, her curls bouncing behind her as she dashed through the open door.

Draco reached out for the frame on his nightstand and slowly removed a picture of a teenager with curly caramel colored hair kissing the cheek of a startled blond, who’s cheeks were bright red and his mouth fill of pizza, while a smiling youth gave each a pair of bunny ears behind them.

Look at this photograph
Every time I do it makes me laugh
How did our eyes get so red?
And what the hell is on Joey’s head?

The photo beneath was of Draco’s parents standing before Malfoy Manor, they were both gone now, and the manor sold, but their disappointed, sneering faces still glared out at their only son.

This is where I grew up
I think the present owner fixed it up
I never knew we ever went without
The second floor is hard for sneakin’ out

Setting the frame face down on the bedside table, Draco dressed and made his way downstairs.

The Daily Prophet sat open on the table declaring to one and all that today was the first day of classes, and the tenth anniversary of the end of the war.

This is where I went to school
Most of the time had better things to do
Criminal record says I broke in twice
I must’ve done it half a dozen times

“What was it like going to Hogwarts?” Mya, asked.

“It was some of the best years of my life.”

“Are you sad that you didn’t graduate?”

I wonder if it’s too late
Should I go back and try to graduate
Life’s better now than it was back then
If I was them, I wouldn’t let me in

With a shake his head, Draco replied, “No, I’m not sad. None of us graduated that year. We all had other things we needed to do.”

“Like being my dad.” Mya, grinned.

“Yes, like being your dad.” Draco replied with a smile.

Getting up to close the back door, Draco glanced at the swing set in the backyard, slightly rusted with a grassless patches of dirt beneath the swing.

Every memory of looking out the back door

~~~ A four year old with golden curls and laughing chocolate eyes, laughed as she swung back and forth crying out ‘higher daddy, higher daddy.”~~~
That memory and a thousand others were captured on film and just waiting upstairs. Taking a deep breath of the morning air, Draco closed the door.
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor
“Mya, we better get going if you’re going to catch the train in time.”
It’s hard to say
It’s time to say it
Goodbye, Goodbye
The house stood silent as Draco took one last look inside. Mya’s touch was everywhere from the purple handprints on the living room wall, to the drawing covering every inch of the refrigerator. She was leaving but she would still be here with him.
Every memory of walking out the front door
Rubbing the photo in his breast pocket one last time, Draco locked the door and made his was to the car to drive his daughter to the station.
I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for
“Are you sure you don’t want to wait till next year?” Draco pleaded.
“No, dad! I can’t wait to use my wand; Mr. Olivander says it’s the same as the one he gave mum.” Mya laughed with a dreamy look in her eye.
It\'s hard to say
It’s time to say it
Goodbye, Goodbye
The shops along the street whizzed past as one in particular caught the young girl’s attention.
“Is that where you and mum hung out the summer you ran away from home?” Mya asked.
Remember the old arcade
Blew every dollar that we ever made
The cops hated us hangin’ out
They say somebody went and burned it down
“Yes dear, your mum, your uncle and I spent a good part of our summer there until we had to leave.”
As another song played on the radio filling the silence, Mya chirped, “Oh dad turn it up I love this song”
A smile cross Draco lips as he watched Mya belt out the words to the latest song on the radio, she looked so much like her mother sometimes it hurt.
We used to listen to the radio
And sing along with every song we’d know
We said someday we’d find out how it feels
To sing to more than just the steering wheel
Shaken from his thoughts, Draco heard his daughter ask, “Daddy was mummy the first girl that you ever kissed?”
Kim’s the first girl I kissed
I was so nervous that I nearly missed
She’s had a couple of kids since then
I haven’t seen her since God knows when
“No sweetie, but once I kissed your mum, I knew I never wanted to kiss another girl again.”
“Not even me?” Mya pouted.
“Except you.” Draco answered with a smile.
Pulling up to the station, Draco helped Mya with her trunk and the pair made their way to platform nine and three quarters. Draco took in the bustle of anxious children boarding the train and their tearful parents. All around him he could see faces he knew, some that he didn’t, but he could imagine many more that should have been here today.
Moving closer to the train, Draco stood before the life size monument in the center of the platform of the golden trio. Hermione and Ron held Harry between them, their faces so determined for being so young. It was exactly the way the looked as they stood in the center of Hogsmead that fateful day. Harry had managed with the help and strength of his two best friends to destroy Voldemort, but not without a price. The plaque beneath read ‘They fought when no one else did, they died so that we might live.’
I miss that town
I miss their faces
You can’t erase
You can’t replace it
I miss it now
I can’t believe it
So hard to stay
Too hard to leave it
If I could relive those days
I know the one thing that would never change
“Here honey, I want you to have this photograph of your mum and I.” Draco said as he held out the photo.
“But dad, it’s the only one you have of the two of you together.” Mya answered with tears in her eyes.
“I don’t need it anymore; I’ll always have you to …..” Draco replied as his throat grew tight.
Look at this photograph
Every time I do it makes me laugh
Every time I do it makes me
“Remember your mum.”
