The Future

CHAPTER 48: The Future

Ten year old Daschel Malfoy looked adoringly up at the portrait of his beloved older brother Draco. He spent hours at a time sitting in the hall chatting with him and frequently brought in board games for the two of them to play, even if he had to move Draco’s pieces for him.

“Alright Dash, where is Mum?” Draco asked softly. He had accepted his fate, but if there was one regret that he had, it was that he missed out on holding his little siblings. Daschel was ten, Jude was eight, Leo was five, Annalise was two and Jonah was only four months.

“She’s changing Jonah’s nappy and dad is out back with the others.” Daschel said.

“Okay, go up to the third floor to my room. In the corner you should see my old broomstick and on the mantle is a snitch. Run your finger over the seam and the snitch will activate. Now the broom is a Nimbus 2001, not a beginners broom so be very careful.” Dash nodded his head and ran up the stairs, tripping over his own feet in his haste to get into Draco’s room.

Leo came speeding through the hall on a small red tricycle, banging into the table and sending the flower vase rocking. Hermione came in just in time to grab it before it toppled over.

“Leonardo Malfoy I told you not to ride your trike in the house, now take it out back!” She had the baby cradled in one arm as she shook her head and watched the little one ride as fast as he could towards the back door. She could see Jude in the family room scouring through the latest stack of comic books Harry had brought him from London, and Lucius was coming down the hall with Annalise in his arms, a little fairy crown of bright pink Gerber Daisies sitting atop her platinum curls.

“Look Mummy! I the princess!” She smiled. Annalise was her father’s pride and joy and in his eyes there was nothing more perfect than the little girl they had created.

“I see that my love. Daddy made you a fairy crown didn’t he?” She kissed one chubby little cheek then rose to her toes to kiss the handsome prince carrying their little princess.

“Maybe Mummy would like to walk in the garden later and play fairy prince and princess?” He whispered suggestively into her ear.

She didn’t get a chance to answer as the soft buzzing of a snitch sounded in the main hall.

“What in the hell?” Lucius looked up in confusion at the tiny golden ball, and then whirled to see Dash flying down the stairs on Draco’s old broom to snatch it quickly from the air and pull the broom to a halt expertly.

“I caught it! Draco I got the snitch!” Dash seemed oblivious to his parents staring at him in shock as he held the snitch up for Draco to see.

“Bloody fantastic Dash! I knew you were a natural seeker, just like your big brother!” Draco smiled. It was true, with the exception of the attitude problem; Dash was a perfect replica of Draco.

“Dash?” Lucius set Annalise on the floor and the little blonde fairy toddled over to talk to Draco’s portrait.

“Drakie I fink Dash in twouble.” She whispered.

Dash climbed off of the broom and stood with his head lowered in front of his father.

“Yes sir?”

“Who taught you to fly son?” Lucius asked.

“Uncle Harry.”

“And who has been teaching you Quidditch?” Lucius wanted to be upset at Dash’s reckless and dangerous behavior but he was far to impressed with his son’s demonstration.

“Draco.” Dash said.

“That was a very impressive show of skill Dash, I’m very proud of you. BUT! You are not, under any circumstances to fly inside the house or chase the snitch inside. You could have broken something, hurt yourself or one of the little ones. Am I understood?”

“Yes sir.” Dash said. “Do you think maybe I’m good enough to make the house team?”

“Yes, I do.” Lucius chuckled. “Why don’t you continue practicing with Draco’s old broom over the summer and we will see about signing you up for a junior league this fall.”

“Really?” His face brightened and he threw his arms around Lucius’s waist. “Thanks Dad!” He waved at Draco and raced out to the back yard to practice.

“You really have gotten soft.” Draco laughed.

“You shouldn’t encourage your brother to fly a broom in the house Draco.” Lucius frowned at the portrait.

“Oh shush, can’t you see this little beauty is singing me a song.” Draco was clearly using his little sister to sidestep being chastised for encouraging his brother’s bad behavior.

“No harm done,Lucius, let Draco play with Annalise.” Hermione said, handing the baby off to Bindy who took him upstairs. “Millie is gonna keep an eye on the kids…….wanna go for a walk?” She asked, smiling up at him.

“Ready to finish off that Quidditch team?” He asked waggling his brows. Hermione laughed and shook her head. Lucius took her by the hand and tugged her behind him through the house looking for any room that would afford them a little privacy.

Their lives were chaotic at best with five children, but neither of them would change a single moment of it for anything. Their love had blessed them a thousand times over and Lucius relished his second chance at being a husband and father. He was determined that this time he would get it right. So far, so good.
