Chapter 41
Harry opened his eyes carefully. Seeing the mist around him he wondered aloud, “Where am I? What happened?”
“Harry?”
Harry turned around in shock.
“Professor Dumbledore? What happened?”
Dumbledore walked up to Harry and placed his hand on his arm. “You were hit with the killing curse Harry.”
“So am I dead then? Where are we?”
“No my boy you aren’t dead. The curse killed the last of Voldemort’s Horcruxes.”
Harry looked at Dumbledore in shock. “I was a Horcrux? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I felt that I needed to protect you.”
Harry laughed bitterly. “Right you needed to protect me. Damn you Dumbledore. For seven years I followed you blindly never questioning you on anything. You should have been upfront with me from the beginning. Who gave you the right to decide what I could know and not know?”
“You’ve been talking to your sister haven’t you?’’
“Ali is the reason that I have started to question you yes. Why did you try so hard to keep us apart? Was it because you couldn’t control Ali the way you tried to control me?”
Dumbledore sat down on a bench that appeared. Motioning for Harry to sit with him he sighed. “Harry I didn’t try to control you. I saw a small boy who for no fault of his own would be the savior of our world. I was afraid that if you were brought up in the wizarding world you would be treated as a king and therefore would be unwilling to help. You have so much power that I was afraid that you would turn evil if you knew about our world before you were ready. The same with Alexis. I kept you apart because I did not trust your power.”
“You meddling old fool. Ali is the only thing that keeps me grounded! You knew she was my sister and yet for thirteen years kept me from the only family that loved me. It was only from the love of Uncle Anthony and Aunt Marion that I didn’t turn evil. Otherwise the treatment that I endured at the hands of the Dursleys would have been enough to turn me into another Dark Lord. That proves that destiny is nothing more then what WE choose it to be. I have chosen to defeat Voldemort for my family and nothing that you did made me choose that. You nearly succeeded in having another Dark Lord to defeat, but because of my sister whom you didn’t trust I will not become what you feared. What I want to know is why? Why did you fear me and Ali so much?”
“Because Harry you had what I so desperately wanted.”
“And what was that Dumbledore? Power? I have that in spades.”
“No Harry. Family. You have Alexis who would die for you and if I am not mistaken you have a wife now am I right?”
“Yes Hermione and I got married a month ago. But professor I didn’t know I had a family until I discovered the truth in my vault.”
“No Harry that was when the truth was confirmed. You have always known that you had a connection with Alexis or you wouldn’t have had that ceremony yourselves two years ago. But Harry it wasn’t just Alexis and Hermione that you had for a family. The Weasleys love you as their own and you had Sirius but you also had another godfather who did all he could to protect you.”
Harry looked over at Dumbledore not believing what he was hearing. “Another godfather? Who?”
A new voice answered him, “Me?”
Harry whipped around staring at who spoke, “SNAPE!?!”
“Yes Harry I am your godfather.”
Harry sat down on the bench hard. He was in shock. He couldn’t believe that Snape was his godfather. “How in the world did YOU become my godfather? You hate me.”
Snape sat down right next to Harry and took a hold of his hand.
“I never hated you Harry but I couldn’t let anyone know that. After Voldemort came to power the first time I had to distance myself from everyone I loved; my friends, my family, my partner, you.”
“Your partner? What do you mean by partner?”
“What do you think I mean by partner, Harry?”
“Well the only thing that I can think of is that you’re gay.”
“That’s because I am Harry.”
“Who is your partner?”
“I can’t tell you that right now but that isn’t what matters. What matters is how I became your godfather right?”
“Right.”
“Your mother and I grew up together. We were the best of friends even after we came to Hogwarts. When she was sorted into Gryffindor and I was sorted into Slytherin we stayed friends.”
“But my dad hated you and so did the rest of the marauders. So why did mom make you my other godfather?”
Snape laughed, “James never hated me just as I never hated him. Voldemort was rising in power and my partner and I had to meet in secret. The animosity between me and the marauders was a ploy to cover up who my lover was. But it was because of whom my lover was that I was made your other godfather. I just want you to know Harry I love you very much. My partner and I considered you to be a son to us and it about killed me to treat you the way that I have over the years.”
“Then who is your partner Snape?”
“That doesn’t matter right now Harry and it’s Severus please.”
Dumbledore nodded his agreement, “Severus is right Harry you need to make a choice now.”
Harry turned and looked at Dumbledore, “A choice? What choice?”
“The choice as to whether you live or die.”
Harry was dumbfounded, “But I thought that you said I wasn’t dead.”
“And you aren’t. Yet. The longer you stay here though you will eventually die.”
Harry stood as fast as he could, “I can’t die yet professor. It would kill Ali and I can’t do that to her.”
Severus stood also.
“Aren’t you worried about your wife Harry?”
Harry ran a hand through his hair and thought a while before he replied, “Well yes but Mione would be okay. Her power isn’t connected to me like Ali’s is and I know that Ali would not be able to survive if I didn’t. I also couldn’t do that to Draco. He loves her way to much.”
Dumbledore smiled. “It sounds as though you have a lot to live for Harry my boy.”
Harry grinned in agreement. “I do Headmaster. I have a wife who loves me and a sister who would do anything for me and a brother-in-law who would cheerfully kick my ass if I hurt his wife.”
With that Harry gave Dumbledore and Severus a hug and then he was gone. Severus looked at Dumbledore in amazement. “Draco married Alexis?”
“Yes he did Severus. Now all your godchildren are related.”
“Yes they are and I never thought that it would be possible. How I would love to tell him about it.”
“I know you would Severus. You will get your chance but not yet as you are not dead yet either.”
“I’m not?”
“No and it’s not your time. If I am not mistaken then there will be grandchildren around soon for you to dote on.”
Dumbledore grinned at the look on Severus face as he to disappeared into the mist.
Severus looked around him slowly for a moment and then sighed slowly, “Well my love I guess I won’t be meeting you in eternity yet. I’ll take good care of our family until then I promise,” and with this he to disappeared.
If Severus had stayed a moment longer he would have seen a figure come out of the mist with a sad smile on his face. He would have heard words dear to him, “We’ll see one another soon, my half-blood snake prince.”
