Welcome To The Family

Draco watched as Siri wiped up the last bit of punch from the floor. He had had to promise Milgard Goyle that he would replace her robe that had been ruined when the punch crashed to the floor and just finished sending an owl to Madame Maulkins Okaying the purchase. Today had been a complete disaster and it didn’t look to be improving anytime soon. He could here Luna’s shrieks up the stairwell and he reminded himself to take a headache potion when he was finished speaking with Siri.

He walked back to his study and sat down in the chair waiting for his wayward son to present himself. As he sat there he thought of the hundreds of times that he had to stand before his father explaining his reasons for his behavior. He stood and walked out of the room again. He did not want to be Lucius. He walked back to the parlor and called to Siri, “Would you follow me, please?”

Siri looked up at his father and nodded in dread. He was not looking forward to this conversation. He pushed his hands into his pocket and followed his father out of the room.

“Let’s take a walk,” he said.

Siri nodded his head and continued to follow his father.

They went out the front door and down the driveway in silence. Both of them were lost in their own thoughts. Suddenly Draco stopped and kneeled down before his son. “Before we go any further, I need a hug,” he said holding out his arms.

Siri cried and then launched himself into his father’s arms. “I am so sorry father!” he sobbed into Draco’s shoulder.

Draco was shocked by the emotion that spilled through him. He could feel his sons little body shake as he sobbed his grief and Draco himself felt like crying right along with him. He sat down on the cement drive way and pulled Siri onto his lap and together the two of them cried. Siri because he was ashamed of what he had done and how much he had been missing his father and Draco because he was afraid for one moment that day that he had turned into Lucius and he wanted so much more for his only son than to have him grow up with a father like that.

“I love you, Siri,” Draco whispered.

“I love you too, Father!” Siri answered hugging his father tighter.

“Shall we talk about what happened today?”

“Do we have to?” he sniffed.

“Definitely. I was very upset about your behavior today. I was disappointed that you would choose today of all days to make the choices that you did. You knew how important this day was for me and your behavior ruined it.”

“I wasn’t trying to ruin your party, Father.”

“Siri, why have you started calling me father instead of dad?”

Siri shrugged. “I’m getting to old to call Dad Daddy and I can’t have two Dad’s. It gets to confusing. So I thought that I would call you Father.”

Draco nodded his head not liking the name at all. He had always called his father by that name. “Perhaps we can come up with another name then.”

“You don’t want to be my father?” he asked.

“I want to be your dad, Siri. I want us to be friends and have fun together. I want us to be able to talk and confide in one another. I don’t want to be your father. A father is someone like my father used to be. A man who sits behind a desk who can’t be bothered with his son unless he is in trouble for something or is being presented for his weekly visit. I want to love you every single day of my life and be there for you when you need me.”

“But you’re not now,” Siri said softly.

Draco was shocked. “What do you mean?” he softly asked.

“You’re always sad that Lilly is gone and you spend all of your time with Jazzy and planning parties. You never spend time with me anymore unless it’s to yell at me for what I’m wearing or for being to dirty.”

Draco was again shocked. He hadn’t thought of it that way but now that it had been pointed out to him he could understand how it could look that way to Siri. “I am so sorry if I have made you feel like I don’t want you around, Siri. I love you so very much, and I wouldn’t change a single hair on your head for anything in the world. I hadn’t realized that you have felt neglected, and I promise you, on my oath as a Wizard and as your Dad, that I will make time for you each and every day.” Draco felt the magic surround both of them and saw Siri smile.

“Really?”

Draco smiled pulling Siri close again, “Really.”

“I love you, Dad.”

“So what shall my new name be?”

“Maybe I can have two dad’s,” he said grinning.

Draco smiled. “You were right about it getting confusing. It will be hard to have both of us called Dad.”

“I can live with it if you can,” Siri grinned.

“I can most definitely live with it!”

“Dad, am I still in trouble?”

“Definitely. Now, what shall your punishment be?”

Siri took a deep breath and let out a loud sigh. He batted his eyes at his father and tried to look pathetic.

Draco burst into laughter. “Nice try, but its not going to work this time.”

Siri smiled. “Can’t blame me for trying.”

“You might have a bit of Slytherin in you after all,” Draco said proudly.

Siri shook his head. “I will be the son to surprise you the most. I won’t be placed in the houses of my father’s.”

“How do you know that, Siri?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “I just do,” he said.

“God’s, I hope you’re not going to be a Hufflepuff!” he said with a shiver.

Siri grinned. “You have a few years to find out.”

“Alright, all knowing one, I think that for a punishment you will need to work off the cost of replacing Mrs. Goyle’s robe that got destroyed by the punch.”

“You mean the fat lady whose purse got caught in the table cloth? That wasn’t my fault! She pulled the punch over not me! The table cloth was stuck on her and she jumped away and the whole thing crashed with her!”

“Regardless, if you hadn’t startled her by reaching your mudding hand into the pastries, she would never have become startled and jumped backward,” he said. At least that is how Mrs. Goyle had rationalized it.

“That’s not fair!” he argued.

“Siri, how did you get so dirty anyway?” Draco asked.

“Have you talked to Zozo yet?”

“No. Your dad is doing that right now.”

“Oh,” he said.

“What does your nanny have to do with this?”

Siri told his father the story of how they had made mud pies and then got into the mud fight. He then explained how Zozo had lost her wand somewhere along the way and how they had to sneak into the house without being seen. He then hung his head when he told his dad about how he had snuck away from the nanny to grab a pastry. “I just wanted a snack, dad.”

Draco shook his head in disgust. “You guys were throwing mud at each other?” Draco shuddered. He couldn’t think of anything more disgusting than being covered from head to toe in mud.

“It was so much fun!” Siri told him, animated.

Draco tried hard to keep the look of disgust off of his face but he just couldn’t. The thought of rolling in the mud grossed him out more than anything else could have. “God’s Siri, that’s disgusting!”

Siri laughed. “It was fun.”

“Yuck! All right, enough of that subject, or you shall make me sick! What shall your jobs be to earn a robe?”

“How much is the robe?”

Draco named a price and Siri nodded. “How much am I to be paid an hour?”

His dad then named another figure. “So that means that I must work ten hours.”

Draco was impressed. “I didn’t know that you knew division.”

“Aunt Mione and I always do math. She say’s that I’m like you that way because dad was rubbish at it.”

Draco laughed. “That he was, and still is for that matter.”

“How about I rake leaves?” he said looking at all of the leaves on the ground.

“Rake leaves?” Draco asked in shock. “What is raking leaves?”

“You know, dad. You take a rake and you scoop them up.”

Draco thought for a moment. “Is a rake a Muggle item?”

Siri nodded. “We used to rake at our house in America.”

“I don’t think that we have a rake, Siri. Here we just use magic.”

“We could buy one,” he suggested.

“How does one go about raking?”

Siri described the process to his father and Draco nodded. It didn’t sound very difficult and he thought that the exercise would be good for his son. God knows that they had enough leaves to keep him busy for a hundred hours, let alone ten.

“Alright, I will purchase a rake and for ten hours you shall rake leaves.”

“All in one day?” Siri asked in horror.

“How about we say you will rake for two hours a day for the next five days?”

Siri thought that sounded fair and he held out his hand. “Deal,” he said.

Draco took his son’s hand not knowing what he was up to.

“You make a deal with someone and you shake on it, Dad.”

“Oh, alright. Deal. Now, lets go find your dad. I guess we should also check on your Aunt Luna. She was screaming the house down when we left, so perhaps she has had her baby by now.”

“Why are girls so loud?”

Draco shuddered. “God only knows, Siri.”

Luna screamed as another contraction hit her. They were coming one on top of the other now. She barely had time to breath before the next one came. “God’s Ronald, if you ever do this to me again I will hex your cock off!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Ron blushed and looked at his mother who didn’t seem to be fazed by his wife’s comments. He unconsciously crossed his legs and patted his wife’s hand. “It’s all right, love, I’ll leave you alone,” he said.

“You’re not going to leave me you git!” she screamed as another contraction hit.

“No, no of course not, dear. I’m right here!” he said patting her hand again.

“Stop fucking petting, I’m not a bloody dog!” she yelled at him.

Ron looked helplessly at his mother. He wanted more than anything to run out of the room but he knew that his mother, his best friend, and most especially his wife, would kill him. A man had no business being in the birthing room and he filed that thought away for the next time that she went into labor. That is if she did let him touch her again.

“I hate you, Ronald Weasley!” she yelled.

“That’s it dear, nice and easy. The head is crowning,” his mother said ignoring him.

“Alright Luna, I need you to push on the next contraction. Bare down with all your might and push. Squeeze Ron’s hand if you need to!” Hermione said as the contraction hit.

“Not my hand, Mione! I think she’s already broken it!” he shouted as his wife dug her nails into the top of his hand. “Ouch, Luna!”

“If you say another fucking word, Ronald Weasley, I will kill you!” she screamed as the baby’s head emerged.

“Good, Luna, the head is out. Now I need you to push again so that you can expel the body. On the count of three push! One, two, three, Luna, push!” Hermione said.

Ron knew to keep his mouth shut and he grimaced when his wife tore apart his hand again. He heard her screams and then the baby’s cries and he looked up at Hermione in relief. She looked at him and smiled. “We’re almost done. You can relax for a moment, Luna. Ron, do you want to cut the umbilical cord?”

Ron turned green. “God’s no, Hermione! Why in Merlin’s name would I want to do that?”

“It’s a Muggle tradition. The father always cuts the cord.”

“Muggles are weird, Mione. I’ll stick with the Wizarding tradition of holding my wife’s hand and pretending that I can’t see anything,” he said.

Molly laughed. “You’re as bad as your father, Ronald.”

Suddenly it occurred to Ron that he had no idea what the baby was. “Is it a boy, Mum?” he asked hopefully.

The three women looked at each other and smiled. He had been so sure that they were having a boy and he had crowed about it for months while the women smiled between them. “You have a daughter, Ron,” she said smiling and holding his squirming daughter up for him to see.

“Bloody hell!” he whispered when he saw her pink, naked body. “A girl!”

Hermione put the baby gently into his arms and smiled at his bemused expression. He looked into her hazy blue eyes and he smiled. He was lost with the first look. “Hello, beautiful,” he said grinning. “Autumn Hermione Weasley, welcome.”

Hermione gasped in surprise and felt the tears well up in her eyes. She looked from Luna to Ron and then cried. “Thank you,” she said sobbing.

Ron looked at her and shook his head. God only knew he would never figure a women out. He looked down at his daughter and swore then and there that she would never act like they did.
