Chapter 40
As he turned to the Forest he knew the bastard that had haunted his whole life was there. He could feel it even without the Dementors’s chill coming from the Forest. The darkness was getting darker, the cold of the night was freezing. He held on tightly to all the good things he could as he watched the grounds freeze as if the first frost of the year had come. As plants closed up and froze, the ground became icy. As the lake froze as Dementors came flying into view like a thousand grim reapers. Out of the corners of his eyes he saw patronuses being cast and was proud of the DA for remembering so well.
He cast his own stag and turned it on the nearest dementor. For a moment he and the students, teachers, Aurors and Order members left that weren’t taken to Pomfrey just stood with their patronuses ready to attack but the dementors had stopped and were lining up in two lines as if welcoming a king. For them they were, they were harboring the arrival of Lord Voldemort, Tom Marvolo Riddle, the bane of the world.
As Harry straightened his shoulders he felt Hermione, Ali, and Draco come up behind him just as Voldemort came gliding onto the field like a dementor himself. Like a nightmare come to life. God, he looked even worse than the day he came back to his form. He was a pale white slimy looking things with what he called skin laying tightly over bone. He looked like a skeleton with skin. He was all angles, edges and sharp points. No cushioning on this monster. He still had his red-slitted like a snake eyes and that seemed to burn, to glow. His face still looked like a strange combination of snake and what might have been human like it had when he came back. His looks frightened all around him, even his followers. Many cringed in fear but all Harry seemed able to do was stare at the monster and growled deep in himself with the anger he felt.
“I know you’re here Potter, show yourself or are you going to be a coward like your family,” Voldemort taunted in his high, clear voice.
Harry took a breath and stepped forward saying clearly, “Here I am, Tom. You don’t scare me and my family weren’t cowards.”
The field was now silent, motionless but for the two of them. Everyone Death Eater to student seemed stunned they didn’t move, speak. It even seemed they forgot to breath at moments. They all seemed just fine with moving away from these two forces and letting them have at it.
As Harry and Voldemort stood a few feet apart Ali broke away from the crowd and snuck behind Voldemort. Harry had told her about Dementors so she tried to keep happy thoughts close to her to keep their chill away. Plus having the ability to control the water they chilled did help too. She just kept the air around her at a comfortable temperature as she moved. Harry saw her she knew he did because he kept moving into Voldemort’s line of view as they traded taunts and circled one another to keep Voldemort oblivious to her presence.
“She didn’t know if this idea would work, but she hoped it did. She was Harry’s power Voldemort knew not wasn’t she. Maybe if they combined their powers they would beat this monster,” was all she kept thinking as she looked upon Voldemort visage and almost became sick to her stomach and not because of morning sickness.
Finally she stood right behind Voldemort with Harry right in front of him. They nodded at one another as if to say doesn’t this snake ever shut up and raised both their hands out in front of them and fired off huge blasts of fire and icy water at Voldemort. It seemed to be doing its job, whatever that was, Voldemort was screaming in agony. As the fire and icy water hit him from both sides and engulfed him.
Burning and Freezing him. As he fell to his knees in a desperate move he shot off an Avada Kedavra right at Harry. It hit Harry right in the chest and he flew back through the air twenty feet, his sword went flying and landed at Neville Longbottom’s feet. He slowly reached for it and took a hold. He pulled it out of the ground it was embedded in and this was the last thing she noticed before her mind went blank.
Ali was in complete shock but as she heard Hermione scream Harry’s name her shock broke and she fell to her knees broken.
“How the hell had this happened? After all their training? After all the power they had gained, how could the same spell that had cursed him seventeen years ago take him from her, from Hermione, from the world. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be!”
As she kneeled their in stunned silence Voldemort struggled to stand, but he was clutching his chest where their elements had hit. He was hurt, the badster was hurt. Maybe they had gotten something right, but had gone about it wrong. If only Harry was alive to try again. She knew they’d get it right the next time. Voldemort called two Death Eaters to him and they helped him walk towards the school.
They stopped for a moment so Voldemort could gloat at Harry’s body. As they turned to walk away and head to the school again Voldemort cast a spell so everyone could hear him as he said, “Your Hero has fallen. Lord Voldemort now rules. Bring the pests into the school so I may decide their fates.”
Ali felt herself being grabbed around the upper arms and pulled up. They were forcing her away from Harry back into the school and she couldn’t stand it. All she seemed able to do was stare back at Harry’s body just laying there on the ground like a broken doll and unmoving and cry her eyes out. She didn’t even notice when clouds gathered and it began to pour. Her feelings when she finally could feel made her think of the song by Superchick called “Stand In The Rain”. The pain made her wish she couldn’t feel, that she could just disappear and never be found.
She looked up as they entered the Great Hall and she was shoved down at the feet of Voldemort who had Death Eaters transfigure a table into a throne for him and was now being administered to by Madame Pomfrey against her will. She saw Draco and Hermione not far away. Draco looked at her and tried to show strength through his tears as he held Hermione as she broke down. All Ali could think was the image of Hermione emotional broken like she was was going to haunt her for the rest of her life. It made her think of the song by Anastacia called “Pieces Of A Dream”, but as she broke down herself all she could think was she felt like the ground had been pulled out from under her and she was falling a dark abyss.
“So my dear, who are you? What are you? Potter’s whore?” Voldemort hissed in his snake-like way.
“I’m not telling you a damn thing you bastard!”
“Oh, really? Well, I think I’ll let you live for a while yet so I can have my fun watching you suffer as I make you watch me kill these blood traitors and Mudbloods, what do you think?” Voldemort replied evilly as he motioned for two Death Eaters to pull Draco and Hermione in front of him.
As Voldemort pointed his wand at Draco who was know being forced to kneel and face him in the eyes by a Death Eater pulling on his hair everyone heard a deep, desperate scream throughout the hall as Severus Snape appeared out of the crowd and rushed Voldemort. At the last moment Voldemort shot a spell Ali had never seen and Snape fell to the ground at his feet right in front of the throne. Voldemort slowly reached down bringing Snape’s face up to look at him with one skeletal finger below his chin.
“You never were truly mine were you Severus? Always sneaking behind my back to that old fool and his Order. Just to protect the child of your lost love. Your just as pathetic as your godson here. Shall I let you watch as I torture him and then kill him before I kill you?”
“Go to Hell you pathetic half-breed badstard!” Snape wheezed out obviously in immense pain.
Voldemort sat back and hissed clearly, almost sweetly and suddenly Nagini came slithering out of a cubby hole she had found in the ruined school walls. She came to lay wrapped around open of the chair back’s horns.
Voldemort hissed sweetly to her and then she slowly turned to face Severus. Severus tried to get away but he couldn’t. Nagini wrapped herself around Severus until even if he could move he wouldn’t be able to. She was constricting his movement and slide her head to his throat and bit down. Pumping venom into his body to the point where he shook. He shook for a moment and whispered something no one could catch and then went still. She unwrapped herself and slithered back to Voldemort who petted her as if watching her kill a human being was normal which for him it was apparently.
The body of Severus fell to the floor and was kicked down the steps and stopped right at Neville’s feet.
Neville looked down at the one teacher that had scared him throughout school and cried. Even if Professor Snape was mean, he was an ally. He did what he had to protect, to survive and he didn’t deserve to die like that. As Neville watched Nagini slither away from Voldemort again this time heading towards a third year that had been caught he couldn’t stop himself he stepped over Severus’s body and stunned those who tried to stop him. He threw a rock he found at the snake to make her turn his way and as she rose to strike at him he swung the sword with all his might. He didn’t know what he had done even as he saw Nagini’s headless body crumble to the floor until he heard Voldemort yell, “No, Nagini! My beautiful Nagini!”
He had just killed Voldemort’s pet. A huge snake without blinking or thinking for that matter. As he watched the body crumble the head came to land right at Voldemort’s feet. Many cheered at Neville’s surprising courage, but little did they know he had also killed a part of Voldemort’s soul. Now that all that remained of Voldemort is what sat in his throne and cradled the head of his dead pet.
Madame Pomfrey rushed to Severus’s side and began trying to heal him. She knew there might be a chance to save him and she was going to fight the odds, after all he had been through in his life he deserved something better than this. In so many ways Severus and Harry were mirror images of each other, she wondered many times what their relationship would have been like if Harry knew.
