Chapter 37

Harry led the way to the Great Hall where Luna had said Professor McGonagall was calling a gathering for all the school. Apparently when they came back something or someone noticed and Death Eaters had begun arriving. Along with werewolves, dementors, trolls, and other nasty dark creatures on their side. McGonagall was trying to get the younger students to evacuate as quickly and safely as possible with as much of their smaller possessions as she could. Luna said that apparently she had tried to get all students to evacuate, but most of the students from fifth year up wanted to stay and fight. In the end they had.

So, when they entered the Great Hall with a determined step and headed straight for the Faculty Table area all heads turned to them. As they walked towards a shocked McGonagall it was like the Red Sea parting and Harry in the back of his consciousness could hear the voices and whispers beginning, but he ignored them. He had a war to fight and he could just feel the darkness of the one person who had haunted his every second outside the school. He was getting close and He was mad.

“Well, good you bag of useless, heartless, soulless flesh so am I,” thought Harry as he nodded to McGonagall and the other teachers and some Aurors he knew and turned to the school.

“So, you wish to fight do you? Well, congratulations you got your wish. Your going to fight. Darkness has fallen and the monster in the closet has come to play. So, gather your courage and wits about you and pray to whatever being you want that you make it.”

As his quick announcement faded into the air the students’ voices lowered from excited zealousness to serious determinedness as they gathered their courage and got their wands out. They didn’t even question why Draco Malfoy of all people stood at Harry Potter’s side with some unknown girl. They didn’t even question when the girl, Draco, and Hermione went about the students, teachers and Aurors and began splitting them into groups with specific jobs.

As Hermione sent two groups of students that were evacuating away towards the dungeons with their escorts of a couple Aurors and a few teachers Ron walked up to Harry and asked what Harry wanted him to do.

Harry looked at Ron and smiled, “Fight with the third group of students, they’re the average casters and will need a little more help. They’ll need your expertise with strategy to get through this.”

“Okay, mate. We are still mates, right?” Ron said looking a bit unsure.

Harry didn’t respond for a moment, but when he looked down at Ron and saw his face, his sincerity he felt himself forgiving Ron, not completely, they had a lot of things to work out but beginning to. Harry smiled and said, “Yeah we are…Mate.”

Ron sighed in relief and grinned as he walked backwards to his battle charges, “Good.”

“You forgave, Weasley? I didn’t think you ever would,” Draco said from Harry’s side.

“I haven’t completely forgiven him, but I am beginning to. We’ll never be as close as we were before, but maybe if we get through this, we can be friends at least again.”

“We will get through this Harry. We have what Voldemort doesn’t…”

“What, Ali?”

“Yes, but that wasn’t what I meant. I meant hope, something to fight for.”

Harry looked over at Draco and then back out over the people willing to fight for everything they had with their lives if it came to that. And for Harry he knew that’s what it would cost many he looked on, their lives.

“You’re right. We do. He could never understand this willingness to die for something bigger than yourself, to protect what’s yours would he?”

“Nope. Now what do you say we go out there and big those badsters hell.”

“They have enough hell, but why don’t we show them what it really means to be human.”

“I like that.”

“So do we,” the boys heard from behind them and when they turned they came face to face with their wives’ smirking faces.

Harry smiled and turned back to the fighters in front of him, “Okay, people let’s give Hell an Earthly welcome.”

With that everyone followed Harry, Hermione, Ali, and Draco out the Great Hall and out to the grounds of the school. Where once the doors of the school opened and they stepped out it was like walking straight into another world, a world where Hell ruled, where war and death ran rampant.

All Harry could think was this field of destruction was where the smaller but more determined army behind him was going to fight the bigger more evil army in front to save or take over the world. This scene reminded him of the song “Stand My Ground” by Within Temptation. He and his little army of students, Aurors, Order members and teachers were ‘standing their ground’ against something ‘invading their world’.

The battle field was already a war zone of destruction but they stepped on to it ready to fight or die for what they wished to protect.

As Harry looked out to Hogsmeade his heart dropped to the ground Hogsmeade was completely destroyed. It looked like those cities on tv hit by a bomb or in those hero movies. Buildings were crumbled to the ground, some were on fire. Some pieces if standing were in flames. People were stumbling around hurt, wounded, near death.

Vampires and other dark creatures were having a ball feasting on those who couldn’t fight anymore and those who did they killed. People were running and screaming. Children were crying for parents they couldn’t find. Bodies lay on the ground dead and broken. But what hurt him the most was seeing a little girl in the middle of it all shaking and crying at her dead mother trying to wake her.

The grounds of the school Hagrid had worked so hard and long on, worked so adoringly on were burnt, ripped up, shredded, blood stained, on fire. The Dark Forest looked like the giants that had come had just trampled on everything not caring to try and preserve anything. He could see magical creatures that were usually in the forest on the grounds trying to escape to safety.

He wondered for a moment how Hagrid’s brother was, how the centaurs were. These scenes were likes those you’d find in an epic superhero movie. Scenes that made you wonder if the hero could save the people from the villain or if the villain would win at last. Scenes that made you despair but also pray and hope that the hero did beat the villain. He just hoped he could do that for these people counting on him. He just hoped he could beat this villain that called himself a lord.
