Sirius paced back and forth for hours before the floo. The entire day had passed and night had begun. He just kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting. He was actually contemplating going to the Ministry and turning himself in just so that he could get some information when the floo burst to life and his lover stepped through and directly into his arms.

“What’s happened?!” Sirius demanded immediately.

“Charlie got a healing charm off on Draco, but then—.” Remus dropped into a chair at the kitchen table. “Neither of them turned back into humans. We were making arrangements to have them both hidden away in the Dark Forest.”

“They didn’t transform back?” Sirius asked with concern.

“No, and it gets worse,” Remus said, already standing.

Sirius nodded. “Charlie healed Draco, right?”

“He’ll scar and he’ll need time, but Charlie believes Draco to be out of danger.”

“And Harry?” Sirius asked, grabbing his cloak from the peg on the wall.

Remus frowned. “Harry—” Remus shook his head. “Harry was weak, but we couldn’t really tell.”

Sirius smiled. “Let’s go find out.”

“You’re not listening!” Remus shouted. “They’re gone!” Sirius looked confused. “They turned invisible and flew away. We weren’t able to track them.”

“What do you mean, gone?” Sirius asked desperately.

“I mean that two very weakened and wounded dragons disappeared. We can’t track them and we don’t know where they went. We don’t know.”

“Did Charlie explain how Harry became a dragon?”

“Basically, he said that in the process of caring for the egg, Harry was handling a whole lot of dragon magic. The power had no filter. It was going straight through him. Charlie believes that his body adapted by stealing some attributes from Draco, including a dragon form,” Remus explained, trying to remain calm.

“When Draco first took on his dragon form, he remained in that form for weeks,” Sirius said in a panic.

Remus nodded. “Come. We’re all meeting back in their suite at Hogwarts.”

“Dobby, tell us where that egg is!” Ron shouted.

“Harry Potter told me that I was to give it to you only if he and Master Draco were dead. You said they’re not dead,” Dobby said, twisting his hands nervously, unsure if he were doing the right thing.

“We understand that, Dobby,” Hermione said, “But they are hurt and missing. There are still Deatheaters around and we want to protect—that egg may well be all that is left of them,” she finished with a sniffle.

Dobby whined nervously. “Harry Potter told Dobby to give Hermione and Ron the egg only if both Harry Potter and Master Draco were dead.”

“Deatheaters will be looking for that egg now that it is known that Harry is Draco’s mate!” Ron shouted, grabbing Dobby by the shoulders and shaking him.

The moment he released the elf, the elf disappeared with a loud pop.

“Damn it!” Ron shouted in frustration.

“Harry Potter’s cousin Dudley called for Dobby?” Dobby asked when he popped into the crammed bedroom on the second floor of the Dursley’s house.

Dudley was backed against the wall, the egg cradled gently against his chest, a look of horror on his face. His voice didn’t quite work, but he pointed to the window. Dobby looked out and saw two dragons: one white, one black. “Harry Potter and Master Malfoy!” Dobby said excitedly.

“My cousin is a dragon?” Dudley asked nervously, but neared the window. He looked down to see the black dragon laying in the lawn, crushing his mother’s flower beds and breaking through the fence into the neighbor’s lawn. It looked weak and sick, if he had any base of comparison, never having seen a dragon before. The white one looked hurt as well, but stood protectively in front of the other. There was a body in a black robe and hood on the ground in front of the white creature.

And just when Dudley was getting used to seeing the huge creatures, the white dragon transformed and there was a very naked, very pale man standing in its place. “Master Malfoy!” Dobby shouted.

The pale man looked up to the window and dropped onto the lawn. “We need supplies and our egg!” Draco called.

Dobby nodded and snapped his fingers. A large pack appeared in his arms. “Where are Harry Potter’s clothes?” he asked.

“Anything he left was put in the cupboard under the stairs,” Dudley said softly. The elf nodded and then stepped from the room. Dudley followed, watching in fascination as Dobby gathered a sack of food and clothing using a combination of magic and theft. He then followed the elf out the back door into the lawn.

“Master Draco!” Dobby greeted, handing Draco a pair of jeans and t-shirt. Draco proceeded to pull on the clothes. “You’re hurt.” Dobby frowned at the hooded man on the ground: a dead Deatheater. “You’re hunted.”

Draco nodded gruffly. “Apparently some of Voldemort’s followers were close enough to hear that Harry and I are mates. We’re in danger. Our egg is in danger.”

“Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger tried to convince Dobby to give them the egg.”

Draco nodded. “They were trying to do what they thought best.” Draco reached out to take the egg from Dudley’s arms, but Dudley turned to keep the egg out of his reach. “That’s my son,” Draco said softly.

“You’re telling me that my cousin is that dragon. Have him turn back like you did!” Dudley demanded.

Draco looked back over his shoulder sadly. “I can’t. He doesn’t know how. He doesn’t—” Draco shook his head. “We’re being hunted. So is our son. We need to disappear for awhile.”

Dudley nodded, still slightly unsure. “If you’re lying to me—“

Draco smiled. “I’m not.” Dudley nodded and handed over the egg to its father. “Thank you.”

“Take care,” Dudley said.

Draco nodded and grabbed the pack from Dobby. “Dobby,” he said. “Let the Order know that Harry and I are alive and well. We’ll be back when things have settled.”

“Dobby understands, sir.” Dudley watched as the pale man crawled onto the back of the black dragon, settling in a gap between the scales between neck and shoulders. He was pushed backwards by strong gusts of wind, and when he looked for the dragon in the sky, there was nothing.

The black dragon collapsed into a clearing from sheer exhaustion. Draco quickly climbed off his back and sprinted to the head of the beast. “Harry, love,” said softly, dropping to his knees in front of where Harry’s head rested in the grass. Electric green eyes glanced up at him before falling closed. “You need to try and be human.”

The dark beast huffed, wisps of smoke escaping his nostrils.

“All right,” Draco agreed. “I’m tired too, but in the morning we are teaching you to become human.” The dragon didn’t respond. He was already asleep. Draco curled up beside the beast to share warmth, their egg cradled against his abdomen.
