WARNING: Spoilers for OotP
The summer passed without incident. Time slipped away both swiftly and mercifully. Although he never left the safety of number four, Privet Drive, Harry\'s summer went by reasonably well. He talked of nothing out of the ordinary with his aunt and uncle and saw very little of his cousin, as Dudley spent most of the summer at the boxing gym. Harry studied and read and polished his Firebolt quite frequently...
He communicated often with Ron and Hermione. Dobby visited him once a week and brought Harry goodies from the kitchens at Hogwarts, along with news of the other goings on in the wizarding world. Hermione rang him up twice weekly from her home and she and Harry would talk for hours. Once or twice, he even spoke to Ron, as Ron was obviously visiting Hermione often that summer. Harry read the Daily Profit every day, as Uncle Vernon begrudgingly allowed nep nephew owl post privileges. Hermione even sent him an early birthday present of a box of books by muggle fiction writers. Considering all these things, Harry stayed abreast of the wizarding world eveoughough he remained separate from it. He missed his friends desperately, but the summer alone gave him the opportunity to think about all the things that had happened in his fifth year.
Two weeksore ore term began, Harry was invited to spend the remainder of the summer at the Burrow with the Weasley family. With the recognition of Voldemorte’s return by the Ministry of Magic, members of the Order of the Phoenix did not need to worry about secreting themselves so muchm thm the wizarding community anymore. The Burrow had become one of the Order’s meeting places and Harry thoroughly enjoyed his time there before the beginning of term, reuniting and catching up with old friends and acquaintances. Hermione even came to stay the last few days of the summer.
But in the blink an eye, the holiday drew close to its end and a trip to Diagon Alley was planned in order to purchase what would be needed for the following academic year. Floo Powder was the method of travel for everyone. So the party set off together: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Mrs. Weasley. Arthur had to work that day on an emergency call and this year the twins would not be making the trip to Diagon Alley. Fred and George now actually owned a part of that shopping district: Weasleys’ Wizarding Wheezes Joke and Novelty Company. Their business was doing quite well, as there were no other joke shops in Diagon Alley.
The display in the window of Fred and George’s joke shop made everyone laugh. Everyone that is, except Mrs. Weasley.
\"It will be a miracle if the board of governors doesn\'t find some way of closing them down,\" she complained.
The twins had set up an elaborate display that included supplies needed by students attending Hogwarts. There were work robes and a pointed hat, textbooks and a pewter cauldron, a set of brass scales and a broomstick, books and quills and even a wand that shot sparks from its tip every thirty seconds. In the center of the display sat an oversized piece of parchment with the heading: \"Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry-- The Supply List They Don\'t Tell You About.\" And below the heading could be found the following list: Ton- Tongue Toffee, Aging Potion, Canary Creams, Bulbadox Powder, Jelly Slugs, Acid Pops, Cockroach Clus, an, and Extendable Ears. Further down on the list could be found the additional notation: \"And for the discerning customer who just can\'t make it through another Double Potions class, we have Skiving Snackboxes, which include: Nosebleed Nougat, Puking Pastilles, Fake Fever Fudge, Cold Sweat Capsules, Chill and Shiver Syrup, Fainting Fancies, Sneezing Snickers (imported from the USA), and Coughing Cola.\"
The crowd in the store could only be compared to that of the mob that descended upon Zonko’s or Honeyduke\'s on a Hogsmeade weekend.
\"It\'s great to see the shop’s such a success,\" Harry congratulated the twins as he, Ron and Ginny gaped at shelf after shelf of jokes and novelties. Fred and George thanked him happily with a wink. Hermione and Ms. Weasley only shook their heads in disbelief. Fred and George had only enough time for a brief conversation before having to get back to the demands of their business.
\"I hope you and Ron will stay with us a few days before the start of term,\" Fred said heartily as he shook Harry\'s hand. Fred, George, Harry, and Ron all turned automatically to look at Molly Weasley, wondering what she would say next.
\"I should think not,\" she replied as she eyed the two older boys.
\"Oh, c\'mon, Mum, we promise we won\'t hurt them,\" George prodded.
\"And we won\'t get them into trouble either,\" Fred replied while helping a customer, \"And we promise to have them at Platform 9 3/4 on the first, and yes, on time, to get back to Hogwarts.\"
Molly looked at the twins disapprovingly before setting her sight on Harry and Ron, who were silently begging her to give them permission. Hermione and Ginny only looked back and forth at each other incredulously.
Knowing that she was outnumbered, Molly consented, but only after giving the four boys a great deal of grief and many threats as to what would happen if any of them got into any kind of trouble.
So it was decided, Harry and Ron would stay with the twins in Diagon Alley the last few days of summer. What on earth Fred and George had planned for them was quite beyond Molly’s desire to imagine. Although Hermione was disappointed that she would not be able to spend that time with Ron, she could not begrudge him and Harry time together, as she and Ron had had numerous opportunities to do so throughout the summer already. So Hermione and Ginny immediately began to make clandestine plans of their own for those last few days. Mrs. Weasley would be only too happy to participate in this ‘girls only’ time away from all the boys...
Maybe all of the extra studying that Hermione had forced him and Ron into doing had done some good. The boys had each passed enough O.W.L.S. with at least an “Exceeds Expectations,\" and had been informed in their beginning of term letters that they had been accepted into eight N.E.W.T.S. level classes: Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, History of Magic, Astronomy, and Potions. Both Harry and Ron could not quite figure out how they had gotten an “Outstanding\" on their Potions O.W.L. Harry beamed with quiet pride when he found out that he, Ron, and Hermione had all achieved \"Outstanding\" on their Defense Against the Dark Arts O.W.L. Harry was certainly not looking forward to another few years of Potions with Professor Snape and he winced as he thumbed through Advanced Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger.
The line to the register was long, so long that the owners of Flourish and Blotts had to set up a second checkout line. As he tried desperately to ignore Ron and Hermione’s latest disagreement (most likely about the boys staying with Fred and George), Harry looked ahead at the customers in front of him, trying to gauge how long he would have to endure. He was next in his own line when he looked over to the customer at the counter in the other queue.
His mouth dropped open in surprise. It was her; it had to be her! He felt that he would be able to recognize that girl anywhere. The suntanned skin and long black hair... it had to be the same girl he had seen with Tonks when he had called on Hagrid via the Floo network earlier that summer. But the girl in line did not turn to look at Harry, so he could not prove his hunch to be true.
\"Buying lots of books, I see,\" commented the clerk at the other register as he spoke to the strange girl. \"Getting ready to go back to Hogwarts, I see.\"
\"Something like that,\" the girl answered.
‘Something like that?’ Harry wondered. He could not keep himself from eavesdropping on the girl.
\"Let’s see,\" the clerk continued, \" A Continued History of Magic, Advanced Magical Theory, Advanced Transfiguration, One Thousand Herbs and Fungi, Astronomy through the Ages, The Monster Books of Monsters, Advanced Magical Drafts and Potions, and The Standard Book of Spells (Grade Six). There you go, missy.\"
Harry stopped cold as he placed his own purchases on the counter and turned to flat out stare. He could only see the young woman\'s profile. Long dark hair, kind of wavy; warm colored skin, like she spent most of her time outside; sharp, angular features, like those of a fox; but he could not see her eyes as she smiled at the clerk and turned to leave with her new books. Harry instinctively turned to follow her; and he took a few steps toward her, but the other clerk’s harsh voice bellowed.
\"Excuse me, sir, but you can\'t leave without paying for these.\"
\"What?\" Harry was pulled from his reverie as Ron and Hermione looked on, very confused. \"Oh!\" Harry fumbled with his money and he tried to watch as the girl left the store.
The young woman walked outside where she was met by Hagrid. Why was she with Hagrid? And why was she buying Hogwarts textbooks? What the bloody hell was going on? Who was this girl?
Harry stepped toward the door to follow her.
\"Sir, sir, excuse me! Sir!?!\" the salesman yelled, finally getting Harry’s attention. \"You might want to take your books and your change before you go!\"
Harry grabbed his belongings and began to make his way to the exit, completely forgetting about Ron and Hermione.
\"Hey mate, hey, Harry!\" Ron called him. \"Where are you going?\" But Harry ignored his friend.
Right now, Harry had to get back out to the alley. He pushed his way through the crowd. He could not lose Hagrid or the girl. He nearly dropped his purchases as he bumped into more than one person in his haste.
\"Sorry, sorry, terribly sorry,\" he mumbled as he made his way to the street. When Harry finally reached the alley, he looked up one way of the walk and then the other.
Neither Hagrid, nor the girl, were anywhere to be seen.
