Chapter 4 - Old Biddies and Archaic Ideas

Hermione strode into the room with confidence till she began to look at all the matronly faces of the Marriage Board. She felt dread as she spied Dolores Umbridge. That old bird was a pain in the arse. Relief surged through her when at the position of the most authority she saw Professor McGonagall. Finally, a witch who was reasonable. Her old head of house wouldn't let her be tied to such filth as what followed her about like niffler when one had a pocket of shiny round objects.
Draco stepped in and stood at her side, reaching to take her hand.
Hermione pulled her fist back and punched him in the nose.
Draco gasped and tapped his nose muttering a quick healing charm.
In the spectator seats, Lucius and Narcissa smiled at them, but didn't wave. On the other bench, Harry and Ron were there, but they were too busy fussing with each other's robes and touching each other's cheeks to pay attention.
“Miss Granger, violence is forbidden in this courtroom!” Umbridge shrieked.
"I thought he was going to hit me," Hermione said with a straight face.
"Given your history, that will be excused," Professor McGonagall said, "But no more of the like. No touching Mr. Malfoy."
Hermione stuck her tongue out at Draco and walked to where she was to stand to make her case.
Draco pouted. He bit his lip. He just wanted her to hug him.
Several of the older witches smiled at this and watched Draco as he looked after Hermione.
"He's definitely a Malfoy," one of them said with a giggle.
“Dear Marriage Board, I ask you to dismiss Malfoy's claim on the grounds that I am not pregnant.”
"She is PREGNANT!" Draco asserted, and he pointed at her. "She seduced me. Surely, you can see how powerless I would be to help myself against her charms."
All the biddies giggled and batted their eyelashes towards Draco. Minerva, however, glared at him.
“Do you have proof of her pregnancy?” Minerva asked.
"Our family Healer is here to testify to that," Draco said. "Though, though, she was--was..."
“Yes, Mr. Malfoy?” Minerva asked sternly.
"She said she was going to have an abortion. Kill our love child. What did the baby do wrong? Where would our world be if we allowed innocent babies to be killed?" Draco hid his face in his hands.
The biddies murmured and glared at Hermione. Even Minerva gave her an evil glare.
"As I've not had sex with the nefarious ferret, I am not planning an abortion," Hermione said, glaring at Draco. "Though I might rid the world of Lord Malfoy's deplorable little spawn. BUT that would be a favor to witches everywhere."
"You see how she talks to me?" Draco said, pointing at her.
Umbridge huffed.
"My dear former Professor Umbridge," Draco said, batting his eyes at her. "May I ask a question of you?"
“Of course, Mr. Malfoy,” Umbridge cooed. "You were a wonderfully well behaved child the one year I taught. I remember you well."
Hermione felt sick to her stomach.
"I've been thinking that maybe Hermione turned me down because she didn't like the ring I presented to her. Can you tell me, from a Lady's perspective, how you would feel about the ring I had made for 'My Only True Love?'" Draco walked over and handed her the ring box.
Umbridge gasped when she saw the ring. It must've cost thousands of Galleons. How the silly Muggleborn had managed to ensnare the gorgeous Malfoy heir was beyond her.
"And I sent her a house-elf as well," Draco said, pulling out a handkerchief and dabbing his eyes. He looked down as he continued. "I would gladly get her a different ring if that is her objection. I've proposed three times."
Several of the biddies cooed at him.
"The poor dear," one said, reaching out and touching his head.
“I would marry you this instant!” a toothless biddy exclaimed as she winked at Draco.
Draco caught the horrified look before it hit his face.
"I've brought my Love's friends here who will state how often they have seen us together in the past months. And they will tell you how clear it is to all aurors that we are a couple. It was never as secret as Hermione wanted. I believe she was embarrassed of me. She said she didn't want people to know."
Draco continued to dab at his eyes.
“You were a pest, Malfoy!” Hermione screamed, shaking a fist at Draco. “Always hanging around my office, asking me out. I don't want you!”
Draco turned around and made loud sobbing noises into the handkerchief.
"Mr. Potter and Mr. Weasley," Minerva addressed the couple who were fussing over each other.
Harry looked up at her. Ron continued to play with Harry's hair.
“Yes, Professor?” Harry asked sheepishly.
"Do you have any reason to believe that Miss Granger and Mr. Malfoy are as close as Mr. Malfoy alleges?"
“Well, they always spend a lot of time in her office, behind closed and locked door,” Ron said thoughtfully as he cocked his head to the side.
“And at the last Gala, they were dancing very closely and then sneaked away,” Harry added.
"I had no choice but to dance with him," Hermione said. "Professor McGonagall, have you ever known me to make a scene in public or to be disrespectful?"
Minerva chose not to answer. The only scenes Hermione had ever caused always involved Draco Malfoy in a way.
"I have never been with Draco Malfoy," Hermione said. "When we are alone in my office, it is out of need to reprimand him on his conduct. He profiles magical creatures. I must remind him that he is not to be doing such things."
“Darling, you know that the reprimanding is just one part of what we've done. The rest is not meant for polite company.”
Hermione launched herself at him.
"I'm going to kill you, Malfoy!"
Draco caught her in his arms.
“No violence in the courtroom!” Umbridge screeched and hit the bench with her gavel.
"She wanted to hug me," Draco said, sniffing her hair. "You see she can't keep her hands off me."
Draco leaned down and kissed her forehead as Hermione struggled in his arms.
"I want to scratch out your eyes and feed them to thestrals," Hermione hissed, wiggling and trying to give him a good smack.
“Please excuse her language. The pregnancy hormones are affecting her,” Draco said sweetly.
“I am NOT pregnant!” she said, stomping her foot and trying to push Draco away.
"It will be alright," Draco whispered, tucking his chin on top of her head. "I'll take care of you and the baby. You don't need to fight me. I would never hurt you."
“It is clear that Miss Granger needs potion therapy. She is in denial,” Umbridge announced.
"I'm not pregnant," Hermione said, and she managed to free herself from his grip. Hermione was in tears.
"Don't cry," Draco said, reaching for her. "I'll take care of you."
“Mr. Malfoy, if you would please step back so I can perform the standard pregnancy diagnostic spell?” Minerva asked.
Draco nodded, and he stepped back. He smiled. His spell was still in effect.
Hermione would be his witch. She would learn to love him.
Minerva swished her wand elegantly and performed the incantation.
Hermione held her breath. Just another moment, and she would be free.
Draco turned in a circle.
"Yay!" he clapped as her stomach glowed a soft shade of blue. "You're having a baby!" Draco bounced up to her and tried to snuggle her.
Hermione felt her vision blur. She knew she was not pregnant. It couldn't be true. Blackness enveloped her, and she let her body fall.
Draco snatched her in his arms.
"Call a Healer!" Draco said, sliding to the floor and snuggling her. "Father, call Uncle Severus!"
Severus strode into the room and took in the scene. Delightful.
Draco was pacing around nervously as Severus held her up and gave her the prenatal vitamin potions.
"Draco," Severus said, eyeing his godson as a thought hit him.
“Yes, Godfather?” Draco asked nervously.
"A first pregnancy can be very trying on a witch. It is compounded by not having the father nearby supporting her. I feel that, in thinking of the best interests of Miss Granger, it would be best if she were to move into the Manor where she will be close to you and able to feel and see your support," Severus said, giving her a reviving potion.
“Yes, I fully agree to that. If it could be also stipulated that it is of utmost important that she shares the bed with me as well,” Draco added.
Severus shut his eyes to roll them.
"It might be for the best, but I think that is a decision best left to her."
“She needs me,” Draco pleaded, kneeling down and trying to tug her into his arms. “I will be able to help when she gets morning sickness and when she feels tired. I will give her backrubs.”
Hermione blinked and looked up at Severus. She smiled and leaned into him.
Severus stepped away. He didn't want the witch's attentions.
Hermione moved after him.
Draco hugged her from behind and pulled her close.
"Let go of me, Malfoy," Hermione said, struggling to get closer to Severus. "It's not true. I can't be pregnant."
“Miss Granger, please stay with your fiancé,” Severus said sternly. He could not jeopardize his chance to get Remus Lupin's attention.
Draco held her tight. She would not run away from him.
"But Severus, surely...surely you don't believe this?"
“I have to go,” Severus said, not looking at the witch.
"Severus," Hermione cried wiggling desperately in Draco's arms. "Let go of me, Malfoy."
Severus quickly disapparated. He would not let the squabble go on.
Hermione collapsed crying in Draco's arms. Why was Severus abandoning her?
"Let go of me, Malfoy," Hermione growled, wriggling in his arms. "Let go!"
Draco sighed as he pulled her to his chest.
“Calm down, Love. Everything is going to be fine. Do you want to go home?”
"I don't want to go anywhere with you, Ferret!"
“Shh, Love. Would you like me to give you a massage when we're home?” Draco asked, ignoring her hisses.
Hermione began to cry and struggle more.
"Let go of me!"
He released his grip a little.
“Silence in court!” Umbridge shrieked and hit the gavel loudly.
Hermione finally slammed her heel down on Draco's toes.
Draco yelped.
“No more violence, Miss Granger, or the court will have to restrain you!” Umbridge reminded her too sweetly.
Draco quickly spoke, "She is just stressed. Please, don't restrain her. It could cause her to lose the baby if she is much more stressed."
Draco stroked her hair.
Hermione kept herself from spitting at him.
“I think she should take maternity leave from work from today,” one old crone said.
"I will not," Hermione said as she finally wiggled free from Draco.
Hermione raced out through the door and vanished with a crack like thunder.
“With that, all of the Malfoy family demands are accepted,” Umbridge concluded, smiling brightly at Lucius and Narcissa. "Lucius if you would just come up here and make sure that the contract is to your liking."
Lucius and Narcissa smiled at one another.
Draco shifted back and forth and began to pant.
“Go and find her, son!” Narcissa urged Draco.
Draco looked panicked, "Where would she go?"

Hermione stumbled up the hill toward the Shrieking Shack.
"Hermione, what is wrong?" Remus asked as he watched her approach him with tears streaming down her face.
“They are making me marry Draco Malfoy!”
Remus moved forward and took her in his arms.
"What has happened?" he asked, taking her hand and leading her up into the refurbished house.
“They say I am pregnant with Draco's baby!” Hermione sobbed.
Remus hugged her.
"I hope you won't be upset if I ask you if it is true?" Remus asked, giving her big golden brown eyes.
He had heard some rumors, that she had been sweet with Draco for long.
"I hate Draco Malfoy. He is such a pest. And he profiles magical creatures. He has been terrorizing werewolves."
“He was right that I should've let the Ministry know that I had three werewolf lodgers here. It was a risk, as Barney did go out one night and kill a couple of sheep.”
"It's not just you," Hermione said, and she put her cheek on his shoulder after he set a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows in it before her. “But mostly you.”
Remus decided not to ask her about her affair with Draco. Slytherins were damn appealing, Remus knew from observation. He was lucky that he didn't have to be in touch with Severus Snape. Broody, dark, delicious man...he would be wanking every night.
"You believe me, don't you Remus?" Hermione asked, looking up at him as he wrapped an arm around her.
Oh, how Remus wanted to see those obsidian eyes lit in passion. But that would never happen, as Severus would never be gay.
"What or whom are you thinking about?" Hermione asked, seeing the look in Remus' eyes.
He had a glazed far off look.
Remus shook his head.
"What Hermione?"
“Did you listen to what I said?” She asked, huffing.
"Of course," Remus said, nuzzling her. "I just got to thinking. Do you think Severus would be able to help you?"
“Don't mention him! He turned away from me!” Hermione said, tears springing to her eyes.
"Turned away from you?" Remus asked. "How do you mean?"
“When we were in the courtroom...I asked him to help m-me get away from Draco. But he just left!”
“That is atrocious! We should go and talk sense into the man now!” Remus growled. Before Hermione could protest, he grabbed her and apparated them. Remus clung to her hand and walked around the lake toward Hogwarts' entrance.
“I don't want to see him now!” Hermione whimpered, tugging back in the direction of the Shrieking Shack.
“But you have to! I will tell him what I exactly think of his Slytherin cowardice!”
Hermione gasped as she was dragged down into the dungeons.
Remus pounded on Severus' office door.
“Whoever dares to disturb me will get 20 points off immediately!” Severus yelled.
"I'm not a student!" Remus shouted, holding firmly to Hermione's hand.
Severus gasped. He pushed his hair back and cupped a hand around his mouth to check his breath.
"Severus Augustus Snape, you let me in right now. You have a lot of nerve making my friend cry."
Severus opened the door, masking his nervousness behind his aloof mask.
Remus felt his bravado falter as he looked into Severus' onyx eyes.
"Why did you abandon Hermione?" Remus asked in a calm tone. He moved Hermione so she was between Severus and himself.
“I did not abandon her. My presence was not required.”
“She pleaded with you, but you abandoned her!” Remus said and poked Severus' chest while staying behind Hermione.
Remus cheeks colored, though, whether it was from touching Severus or anger at the injustice Hermione had suffered, he didn't know.
Severus looked into the flashing golden eyes. He hated himself momentarily for wondering what they would look like when the wolf was aroused and ready for a thorough shagging.
Hermione felt the magic vibrate between the two men but didn't understand what it really meant.
Remus hid his face behind Hermione.
His cheeks were red and he didn't want Severus to use legilimency on him to divine his desires. Severus would surely blast him for such thoughts, but, Merlin, he wanted to pin Severus against the wall and make him whimper.
Severus frowned. Why did the wolf hide from him? It wasn't fair. Well, he would have the wolf at his mercy soon enough. Maybe he would try the lubrication potion on Remus first.
The thought of touching Remus that way made a slight blush rise in Severus' cheeks.
“Have you both forgotten me?” Hermione whined, looking over her shoulder at Remus.
"You should apologize," Remus said, and he bit his lip. Why did his community service have to be "Beautifying Knockturn Alley?" Potions work would have been more rewarding.
“Hermione, I am sorry I upset you, but I never interfere with family matters.”
"The Malfoys are not my family. I hate them with every tiny bit of my heart," Hermione declared as Remus hugged her.
"I think it is time for a group hug," Remus suggested. "We've arrived at a special place."
Severus blanched. He didn't know how his body would react to the closeness of Remus.
Hermione snuggled close to Remus and latched an arm around Severus.
Severus leaned down and kissed Hermione's temple.
Hermione's heart melted.
Remus blushed. He wished it was him.
Severus was touched by Remus' blushing. Would the wolf blush for him, too?
Remus brushed his hand against Severus' arm even through the thick fabric blocked him from being able to touch skin.
"Remus, may I speak with you a moment?" Severus asked. The wolf didn't need more trouble. Not that he wouldn't enjoy detaining him a little longer.
“Of course,” Remus felt heat rise in his body when he heard the way Severus said his name.
Hermione pouted as Remus walked into Severus' office.
"We'll just be a moment," Severus said, smirking at her.
Hermione couldn't help giggling. She loved it when he smirked like that.
Her Severus was the most amazing man. Why did Draco never quit trying to ask her out? It was obvious she liked a different man!
Severus shut the door softly.
Remus jumped a little and hid his face.
He was alone with Severus for the first time since he had been a teacher at Hogwarts.
“Let me explain to you why I do not participate in this family argument,” Severus said slowly, casting his gaze towards the pickled creatures in the jars on the wall to not look at the sexy dishevelled man.
Remus couldn't take his eyes of the tall and dark man. It was the first time he had seen Severus without the billowing overcoat. Just in slacks and a crisp white shirt Severus looked delicious.
"It is firstly a matter of knowing the Malfoys. I see no reason Lucius would allow such a lie to be spread. Secondly, a test was done on Miss Granger in court, and it was conclusive that she is expecting. I don't believe in abortion as Draco claimed her thoughts to be leaning toward. And I believe that a child needs both parents. It is clear that both in this case are quite capable of performing their duties to the child."
“I don't doubt you, Severus,” Remus said fidgeting a little back and forth. “Just Hermione pleaded with me that she is not pregnant and she is very dear to me, so I believed her.”
"I know. I was caught by her. I think that she is in need of special prenatal potions which I am in the process of brewing," Severus said, quietly.
“Do you need any help with those?” Remus asked, hoping that his voice didn't sound too desperate.
Severus hid his flush by turning around. "Well, I just began, and they need to simmer for an hour. But what does need to happen, is for Mr. Malfoy to have his witch returned."
“Certainly, but maybe you might need some help with chopping or other ingredient preparations? I want Hermione to get the best potions as soon as possible. And I know there's no better potions master than you. I would be honored to help.”
Severus turned to the wolf as he ran his hand along the fireplace mantle.
Remus peered up through long lashes at Severus.
"First, we need to return Miss Granger. Then you may assist me if you wish," Severus said slowly. His fingers dug into the wood slightly.
“Yes, but where shall we return her to?” Remus asked, wishing that those elegant fingers would touch him.
“Maybe it would be best to give her a calming draught and floo her to the Manor.”
"Hermione, please come in," Severus said, opening the door for her.
Hermione came in quickly. She took Severus' hand.
"Would you join us for a brief drink to celebrate?" Remus asked, hugging her.
“Celebrate what?” Hermione asked suspiciously.
"Remus has agreed to help me on a potion that would potentially reverse all the ill effects of Lycanthropy."
“Unbelievable!” Hermione squealed and run to hug Severus.
Severus allowed her the hug, and sneered at the exasperated look on Remus' face.
Then Hermione turned to hug Remus. Remus grinned sheepishly.
Severus held out three vials by the time she turned around. They were in tinted glass. Severus carefully handed a vial to each person while clinging to his own.
“What's in there?” Hermione asked cautiously.
"A special raspberry fizzy drink," Severus said. "It's rather more healthy than what I intended, but still quite delicious."
“Oh Severus, you always surprise me!” Hermione gushed.
Remus grinned and tossed it back, not realizing what his was till it was too late.
Remus coughed.
"Yours was Wolfsbane," Severus said, laughing at Remus as he gave him an offended look and went over to sulk in the corner.
“Remus, don't sulk,” Hermione begged and went to hug the sad wolf.
Hermione sighed and sank onto the stool in Severus' office.
"That is such a great drink, Severus. You shall have to give me the recipe. I feel as if all my worries are gone," Hermione said, gripping the stool before she giggled a little.
“Oh, I will once I refine it,” Severus said and went to sit next to Remus.
Remus could not look up at Severus. How would the man want him? A dirty wolf.
Hermione giggled as she fell off the stool.
"I'm a butterfly princess," she said, giggling as she flapped her arms.
Severus pulled out a black ledger and made a note of what she said.
"Come on Princess," he said, stooping down and gathering her up.
"I love you Severus," Hermione said, and she kissed his cheek.
Severus scowled. He did not love her that way.
Remus looked down. He should have known that Severus was interested in Hermione. Hermione was a young, pretty witch not a grizzly, old wolf.
"I'm just going to take Butterfly Princess home," Severus said. "I'll be back momentarily."
Severus tossed some floo powder into the fireplace and stepped through shouting "Malfoy Manor Parlor."
