Chapter 4 - Suspended

Destiny shook as she sat before her father, she knew that he would rage, but the ends might justify the means. That was the idea anyway.

“So” Severus Snape looked into the eyes of his daughter “You have something important to discuss?”

“No father” she had decided that trying to discuss things would open up the suggestion that she might be swayed, she wanted to give the impression that her mind could not be influenced “I have something important to tell you”

“Really” Snape raised an eyebrow “Let’s hear it then”

“I am going to marry Charlie Weasley” she said, there simple! Although not actually true, it was a good way to get his attention.

“I don’t think so” Snape laughed without humour.

She stood “It will happen, I have decided what I want, and I want Charlie”

Snape regarded her coldly “Is this a deliberate attempt to enrage me?” he asked in that almost seductive tone “Despite the fact that you know your marital future” he held a hand to silence her “You then try to tell me that you intend to marry a Weasley? Oh I already know of your…dalliance in that direction, I thought it best to let you have some fun, goodness knows Draco has” again he held a hand to silence her reaction “But a Weasley? Weasley’s are for fun, not marriage. You even chose the least gifted of them, Charlie Weasley, never quite good enough Weasley. Did you know that most dragonologists are imbeciles? They have failed at life and hide with Dragons to rid the world of their pathetic existence. No, dear daughter, you shall marry Draco Malfoy as you have already agreed, you will honour your bargain and forget all about this silly crush” finally he was finished.

“No, I won’t, I had no idea what that bargain entailed when I agreed, I was 11 for Merlin’s sake!” she was losing her cool, the things he had said about Charlie had cut deep “Charlie is warm, loving, brave and honest, I can’t see Malfoy taming a fire breathing creature can you?”

“Seems he’ll have to learn” spat Snape “You have your mother’s hidden temper”

She continued without acknowledging his words “You forced me into that deal, you said that I could ‘come out’ and live as ‘normal’, if I agreed to marry Lucius’s son. After 11 years of solitude what child would not agree?”

“Whatever the circumstance, the deal was made, the only wizard, excepting the dark lord himself that had the power to release you was Lucius. You wanted to live your life; you have; now you must honour the deal. Lucius wants you for Draco, your combined powers in the form of a child” he smiled at the idea “Will ensure that the purebloods continue to rule the world of Magic” again he spoke quietly, Snape rarely shouted.

“So I am held captive for racism?” she raged “So that you and pathetic others like the Malfoy’s can rid the world of mud bloods? Charlie is pure blood too you know, not that it would matter if he were not, not to me”

“He has no where near the powers of a Malfoy, and it is not racism, it is preservation of tradition”

“By arranged marriages?” she stormed

“It is not ‘arranged’, that implies it was done without your knowledge, it was not. You knew what would be expected of you”

“And if I refuse?” she knew the answer, although hoped that her own father would not return her to the existence she had lived before.

“Then you will return to your former state” he turned away from her so that she could not see the pain in his eyes, he jumped slightly as the door slammed behind her.

Snape put his head in his hands, thoughts drifting to a time many years before. He and Minerva McGonagall had been young, passionate about each other and foolish, she had conceived a child. Severus spent many a night with her before they knew, being a potions student he had produced cocktails of potions that were dangerous, Minerva had drank them at his side, neither knowing the damage that was being inflicted on Destiny as she formed. When they discovered it was too late. Destiny was born hideously damaged. Of course they loved her, but for others protection she was hidden from the world, in St Mungo’s. Destiny had more power than any other witch for decades, but the downside to her power was her lack of control. She was beautiful and deadly. Snape had tested various potions on McGonagall, but two stood out, a vampire vaccine, and a salve to ease the effects of Dementors, for those who were unlucky enough to encounter them. The potions had been undeveloped and poor quality. As with any vaccine, the cure lies in exposure to the cause. Destiny had some of the powers of each; she could literally suck the joy and blood from someone. She could not control the urges, and when they left her for short times, she was an incredibly talented and intelligent child. But the arousal of any emotion, laughter, sadness, melancholy caused her to lose control and kill. Snape felt the full force of responsibility. He had constantly sought to release his beautiful daughter from her condition. When Lucius Malfoy had discovered her existence he had blackmailed Snape. Simple, emotional blackmail. He had said he could release her forever from her uncontrolled urges, make her normal, yet he wanted her hand in marriage for his young son, Draco. Her powers, when honed would exceed his own, and he already knew Draco to be powerful and knew that a child of theirs would be all powerful, more powerful than Tom Riddle and Harry Potter. Malfoy was power mad and the motivation of controlling the magical community was a lure that he could not resist.
Desperate to undo some of the effects inflicted on Destiny Snape had agreed, making her agree by making it sound better than anything. She had agreed and Lucius had freed her. Now she was going to renege on the deal, Lucius had warned that as he saved her, also could he send back with a reversal spell. Snape must convince her to marry Draco, to try and run would be foolish and he knew she knew that. But to see her as a woman, locked in St Mungo’s once again would kill her. It would kill him. It would kill Minerva.

Draco Malfoy watched his bride to be run, she could run but she couldn’t hide. He knew the story behind her. He knew the motivation of his father. He was driven by the same motivation, that and lust. He wanted her, and the knowledge that she had given herself to Charlie fucking Weasley angered him. He didn’t consider that she might not want him. She was promised to him on her 25th birthday and he would have her in a few short days, to toy with as he pleased. The only stipulation his father had insisted on was children. Draco could live with that.

Destiny sat in her room at Hogwarts and sobbed until her chest ached and her eyes burned. She would be 25 in a few days, and then life would change forever. Before Charlie she had thought she would simply marry Draco and follow through with the deal. Now she knew that was impossible. If she did, Charlie would be heartbroken. He already hated the Malfoy’s, and would try and cause trouble. She knew that he would realise she was not in love with Draco, and she would be powerless to lie to him. He would see straight through her. He would try and save her, she knew he would not give up. She also knew that Lucius Malfoy was ruthless; Charlie would meet with a terrible ‘accident’. She desperately did not want to go back to the terrifying ordeal that was being a Vampire Dementor. She had tasted life and love, and to return to that would crucify her. She also knew that if someone’s life must be sacrificed, then it would be hers and not Charlie’s. It would be far better for her to just disappear, than for him to think that she had betrayed him. She knew that it had been a long shot, asking her father for a way out. What must be must be. She cried herself to sleep.

Charlie apparated into his girlfriend’s bedroom. He saw her curled up; hugging the big, sloppy teddy that he had given her on valentines. She had been crying. He curled up next to her, not wanting to wake her. He wished that he knew how to help her, what to do. He felt powerless and stupid. She would not confide in him. He shed a few tears of his own as she slept next to him. Gradually slipping into an uneasy sleep.
