The Perfect Gift by mariteri

What do you get a man that has everything? The question had been in her head since she had been shopping with Draco. He bought his father a tie, claiming since he owned just about everything, it left next to nothing for the younger wizard to buy for him.

She didn’t want to buy Lucius yet another tie. He must own dozens, Hermione wagered. But what did that leave her to get? Certainly there had to be something he didn’t have and wanted that she could get for him.

Two days this went on. Hermione came up with idea after idea that she promptly shot down for one reason or another. A muggle game system? Too childish. A fruit basket? Too pedestrian. Tickets to a quidditch game? He had box seats! There was no winning with this man!

Finally, she did the only thing she could think of doing. She went to the man himself. Charging through the house with a mission, the house elves scattered like leaves in a gust. All of them worried that she was bound and determined to give them tea cozies, or Merlin help them, felted slippers! They knew she meant well, but she still had a lot to learn.

She charged into Lucius’s personal study and exclaimed, “What in the great name of Merlin do I get you for Christmas?”

He blinked at her. “You mean you don’t know?” He set aside the book he had been reading. “Hmm, that is a difficult one. I own quite a bit.”

“I know,” she muttered. “And what you don’t own, you generally don’t want.”

“True,” he said with a nod of his head.

He strolled over to her, looking her over. “What have you been doing? You’re clothing looks a mess.”

She looked down at herself, blushing at the sight of all the needles from the Christmas tree she had been decorating. “I was decorating. I have to ask Mazy how she keeps the trees so perfect.”

“Stasis spell I would imagine,” he murmured, reaching over and taking a long silvery looking thing out of her hair. “What pray tell is this?”

“Oh, an icicle,” she told him. “You put them in the tree. Drape them over the branches so that they look like, well, icicles.”

“You have glitter on your cheek,” he told her.

“You can’t make tree decorations without glitter!” she exclaimed.

“Of course,” he murmured, taking her into his arms. “And I imagine our children are covered head to toe in these icicles and glitter?”

“Glue and popcorn as well,” she said with a nod. “Yes, that they are. I had to have Mazy take them over to get cleaned up. She was tickled at the sight of the tree. She loves it.”

“I doubt she’s ever had anyone ever think to give her one of her own before,” he murmured, brushing her hair back.

“I figured since it wasn’t clothing, it wasn’t going to make her upset.”

“Sound reasoning,” he said, thinking over telling the little house elf what the woman in his arms had planned. It took giving Mazy extra chores to have her stop protesting. “What do you say that we take a bath, love? And you can attempt to bribe me into telling you what I got you for Christmas.”

Smiling she said, “Mr. Malfoy, you are impossible.”

“I dare say not, Mrs. Malfoy, least you never would have married me.”

They walked out of the study without him ever mentioning that he had his perfect gift—her.
