His Best Mistake: Chapter 4

“Your what?” he asked, dumfounded.

“I’m pregnant, Draco.”

“I heard you the first time, Granger, are you sure?”

“Well, my boobs are killing me, I‘m nauseous, and I think if you ask me one more time if I’m sure, I will cut your problem causing dick off!” she hissed.

Draco visibly paled.

“Don’t you blame this on me, you were more than happy to climb on and ride it!”

Hermione snorted, before looking down at their still joined hands.

“How do I know it’s even mine?” he asked.

Hermione pulled her hand from his, as if burned.

“I’m sorry, Malfoy, I forgot I shag everything that walks. Oh wait, that’s you!”

Draco stood and proceeded to pace in front of her.

“Shit, I’m going to be a father!” he cried.

“Yes you are, Malfoy, and don’t for one second thing that once your over your little fit, that you can walk in and out of our lives.”

“I don’t know how to deal with this, Granger.” he breathed.

“Well deal with it, Malfoy, because I have to.”

“When are you due?” he asked.

“In exactly 5 months and 27 days.”

“Granger, this is a big deal, we are going to be-” he started to say but stopped, he placed his hand on his chest and breathed deeply several times.

She stood and placed a hand on his shoulder, he turned to look at her, his eyes pained.

“Are you ok?” she asked.

“Really, really not. Were going to have a child, Granger, aren’t you scared?”

“Of course I’m scared, but I’m not for one second worried about it, I know that he or she will be loved, Draco. We have wonderful families that will help us.” she said her arm still on Draco’ s shoulder.

“Do you have any idea what people would think of us, Granger, we’re not even getting married, hell, we don’t really like each other!”

He knew he was lying the moment the words left his mouth, and he regretted them almost instantly. Her warm eyes clouded over and her bottom lip drooped a little, she removed her hand and sat back down, she placed her head in her hands and began to cry. Draco felt a pang in his chest as the tears flowed down her small face, and he longed to reach out and comfort her, but he daren’t. He knew he had to stick by her, how could one night, the best night of his life, turn out like this? He had fancied himself in love with her for the last several weeks, could this be a sign that they were meant to be?

“Granger,” he spoke as he kneeled before her, “We will get through this. You and me, between us, can do anything.”

“But you’re right, We don’t like each other, how are we supposed to do this?”

“We will learn to like each other, Granger, truth be told, I think we like each other just a little more than we used to, don’t you think?” he winked, making Hermione smile.

She sniffed and wiped her nose with her sleeve, causing Draco to grimace and offer her his handkerchief. She took it gratefully and blew loudly.

“See,” he said as he ran his thumb over her cheek, “That’s the big bottomed fireball, I know and partially like.”

She laughed.

“And you still are the arrogant, Pureblood prat, I know and severely dislike.”

“Come on, Granger, I know one part of me that you really like.” he smirked.

“You’re such a big head!” she laughed.

“Yes we are.” he said as he layed his hand on his crotch.

“Urgh, I hope our baby has my brains, and my sense of decency.” she said.

“And my dashing Malfoy looks and sparkling personality.” he smirked.

“And your father’s hair.” she said dreamily.

“Granger, what is it with you and my father? Do you fancy him or something?” he asked.

“What? No! He just has really nice hair, I always wanted nice straight hair.” she sighed.

“Our baby will have nice straight hair, not the rats nest you call a hair do.”

“He or she could have curly hair.” reasoned Hermione.

“HE wont, and I say HE, Granger, because the first Malfoy child is always a boy, we have the dominant Pureblood genes on our side.”

“Maybe SHE will inherit her mothers Muggleborn genes, you prick!”

“I love it when you talk dirty, Granger.” he smirked.

“You love it when I do anything, Malfoy.”

“Cant disagree with you there, juicy cheeks, Oh god, it’s going to get bigger isn’t it?” he asked with glee in his eyes.

“Yes, so are my boobs, but you seem to like my bum that little bit more.”

“Just your bum, no else’s.” he said as he ran his ran over the curve of her behind.

Hermione gasped and slapped his hand away, causing him to scowl at her.

“What happened to you freaking out? I thought I’d hear the word Mudblood and tainted at least once.” she said as she eyed him looked at her bum.

“Shame on you, Granger, don’t use that word around our child.” he grinned.

“It cant even hear me, Malfoy, so shut it!”

“No, but it can sense your moods, so you shut it!”

She stood up and glared at him.

“I really don’t like you, Malfoy.”

“That just breaks my heart, Granger, because I really love you.” he said with a roll of his eyes, as he remained kneeling on the floor.

There was a light knock on the door, and his mother strode forward into the room and gasped. She had walked in at the exact wrong moment, in her view, she saw Draco on one knee in front of a emotional Hermione, to all intents and purposes, it looked like he was proposing marriage to the Muggleborn.

Lucius appeared after Narcissa and stopped in his tracks, his face frozen in shock. ‘seriously, how many surprises am I going to have to deal with today?’ he thought.

“It’s not what it looks like!” stuttered Draco.

“Get up!” hissed Hermione.

Draco quickly rose and looked at Hermione, who was panic stricken, and couldn’t take her eyes away from Narcissa’s beaming face.

“Oh Draco!” shrieked Narcissa as she walked over and encased her son in her arms.

“No, Mum, I’m not marrying Hermione.” he said as he tried to shake her off.

“Why not?” asked Narcissa.

“Mum, I..Er…We…” he said as he looked at Hermione for input.

“Our relationship is it’s beginning stages, Cissy, we hardly know each other.”

“But…You’re going to have a child, you have to get married.”

“We don’t have to do anything!” said Draco angrily.

“Don’t raise your voice to your mother, Malfoy.” said Hermione.

“Great, now I’m getting it from all corners.” he sighed.

“Your mother is right son, you should marry, Miss Granger. It is only right and fair to the child” said Lucius.

Draco laughed coldly.

“Father, please don’t not tell me what is right and fair to my child, you are hardly one to be giving out advice.” he sneered.

Hermione gasped and looked at Narcissa, who was almost on the verge of tears.

“Don’t speak to him like that! He is only trying to help, Malfoy.” she said.

“Don’t you start as well, Granger, I don’t need your shit as well! You come here and drop this on me, I tell you I will support you and then you stick up for them!” he hissed.

“Malfoy, Please.” she said as she reached out for him.

He stepped away from her, looked at her with disgust and apparated away.

She looked to Lucius and then Narcissa, who’s face’s were identical.

“He left me!” she cried and collapsed on to the sofa.

“Oh darling!” whispered Narcissa as she tried to comfort Hermione, “He doesn’t mean it, he’s just shocked and I dare say a little upset, not with you, but the timing.”

“Perhaps, Cissy, you should let me talk to, Miss Granger?” asked Lucius, knowing he would be the best to speak to Hermione, about his sons reaction.

Narcissa nodded and squeezed Hermione’s shoulder before gracefully leaving the room.

“I’m afraid, Miss Granger, that it is my fault my son is the way he is. He has seen many things because of what I believed would benefit my family. I want you to know this, and remember it. I love my family, and my son more so than anything in this world. He is a part of me and is very much how I was when I was younger, and even more so when I married Narcissa. I was very liberal with my affections and found it easy to turn of my emotions when it came to love, that is the one thing that I am most proud of about Draco. He cannot deny his feelings.

“Draco has always been a very passionate person. I remember at the mere age of 11, he came home complaining about a certain muggleborn witch that had beat him in every single test or answer to a class asked question. I must admit I pushed him, I pushed him at every single moment in which you succeeded, I made it more than clear that it wasn’t acceptable.

“He came home at 14, for the summer holidays, to find me once again, under the Dark Lords influence. He saw me in the pristine black robes, garnished with the Dark Mark, and I saw the fear in his eyes. Being at Hogwarts had changed him, for the better as I would come to realise.”

Hermione knew what was coming next, she knew exactly what Lucius was going to say.

“Then the Dark Lord ordered Draco to kill Dumbledore, a task which upon I hearing he was set to do, knew he would not succeed. Draco will never be a killer. He rules with his heart, whereas I ruled with my head, I did what I thought was right, but it was there in that cell in Azkaban, that I realised my mistakes.

“The Dark Lord came several nights later and liberated myself and the others and immediately set us to work on plans for the invasion of the castle. I knew I had to get to my son, he could not go through with this plan. The Dark Lord was punishing Draco for my failure in the Department of Mysteries. So from that day and every day since then, I have been a member of the Order of the Phoenix.”

Hermione’s eyes widened as she saw the small flame tattoo on the corner of Lucius’ wrist. She knew he wasn’t lying, his eyes shone with sincerity. Hermione wanted to reach over and hug the elder Malfoy, but resisted that very tempting thought.

“We were able to stop Draco from having to carry out the task and Dumbledore was saved. The horcruxes where destroyed and the Dark Lord was defeated, we returned to normal life after Potter gave a statement clearing us of all blame, but the experience of the war was enough to change Draco. I acknowledge the fact that I was wrong about you and I will say now my beliefs have totally changed. A Half-blooded despot nearly brought me to my knees, I will never be fooled again, Draco however became cold, bitter and jaded. He became everything which you described him to be. He see’s what love can drive you to do.

“His love for his mother and I, was the catalyst in his task from the Dark Lord, he was told Narcissa and I would be murdered if he didn’t succeed. The Dark Lord to my knowledge had every intention of killing my family, Draco is now wary of whom he bestows his affection upon. He does care for you Miss Granger, very much so, never doubt that.”

He smiled at her, the first genuine smile she had ever seen grace Lucius Malfoy’s face. It made him seem so much younger than Hermione knew he was. This man was her child’s Grandfather, and she knew he would protect him or her with his life, just as he had Draco.

“Please call me Hermione, Lucius, It makes me feel like I’ve done something wrong when people call me Miss Granger.” she asked.

“In each life, some rain must fall, Hermione, never fear, you have not caught it all.”

“Thank you, Lucius.” she smiled.

“You must stay with us, Hermione, we will have the family healer see you in the morning, I feel you would be better to be here with us.” he said.

“Narcissa and yourself have been so kind to me, I could never thank you enough.”

“You never need to thank us, you have given us the most precious gift of all. Our first Grandchild.” he smiled.

“What am I going to do about Draco, he’s gone, and I don’t think he will be very amused when he returns, if he finds me here.”

“I will find him for you, Hermione and he will see what he has to lose, I promise you this.” said Lucius.

“What if I’m not good enough to be a father?”

“You will never know, son, unless you try.”

“What if I muck it all up? What if it all goes wrong?”

“Then you will learn your lesson and try again, do not let my mistakes make you fear what may never happen.”

“What if she doesn’t want me?”

“She wants you back, she doesn’t want to go through this on her own.”

“She has you and mother and all her friends and family.”

“But she needs you, son, come back for her, for your child.”
