Chapter 4
Blinding Discoveries
Harry was woken up by someone shaking him; he flung the covers off his head angrily and glared at Ron, who was looking at him apologetically. “Come on Harry, you already missed breakfast, and you are going to be late for charms if you don’t hurry.” Harry sighed and quickly got out of bed, “Go on Ron, it’s pointless for you to be late to.” Ron nodded and then left. Harry sighed when he realized that the metallic gas was still there, as were the silver lines on his skin.
He left the common room and started to walk toward the charm’s classroom. He stared at the floor, and was surprised when he saw that the there were metallic lines on the floor, going in every direction. Harry was even more surprised to see that he was following one of the lines straight to charm’s class. “What’s wrong Potter?” Harry stopped and let his head snap over toward the voice. “Nothing is wrong Malfoy.” Harry said and started to walk again. “Obviously something is, you should tell me . . . I’ll listen.” Harry swirled back over to him and walked up until they were only a few inches away from each other.
“Listen Malfoy, I appreciate your concern, but two days of being nice isn’t going to make us be friends after all the years of you being a prat. I am not ready to tell you anything about me.” With that Harry turned around again and walked hurriedly and angrily into the charm’s classroom. “Mr. Potter, you are more than 10 minutes late for class! That will be 10 points from Gryffindor!” Harry mumbled an apology and sat down next to Ron. He let his mind wander as Professor Flitwick explained the charm they were practicing. “This charm will allow you momentary access into someone’s mind. The only reason I have been given permission to teach this to you is because we are in the middle of a war and this might come in handy. You should pair up with someone you trust!”
Harry turned to Ron, who was already facing him and smiling. “Lectio mens is what you have to say, be sure to pronounce is right!” Harry started to say it over and over in his head, wanting to be sure that he said it right. He looked at Ron and said it in his mind and was surprised when he heard what had to be Ron’s voice. “I wonder if I will be able to do this right, I sure hope so, I don’t want to hurt Harry or anything…something feels weird…it’s like someone is in my head.” Harry fell out of his chair and Professor Flitwick ran over. “Mr. Potter what is wrong with you!” Harry looked up and Professor Flitwick and tried to explain, “I…. I…. cast the spell…. without saying it…” Harry said shakily and Flitwick’s eyes widened. “Go to Dumbledore’s office.” With that, Flitwick went back to teaching the charm.
Harry stumbled out of the room and walked to Dumbledore’s office and stood in front of the gargoyle. He sighed when he realized that he didn’t know the password. He was about to say “Mint Chocolate Chip.” But the gargoyle opened and he walked up the stairs and knocked politely on Dumbledore’s door. “Come in Harry.” He heard and Harry silently wondered how Dumbledore knew it was him. “Why are you here Harry?” Harry sat down in the chair and tried not to notice how dark the silver lines where on Dumbledore.
“I…cast a spell without saying it, and I don’t think I had my wand out at the moment either.” Dumbledore looked a little surprised before his eyes started to twinkle. “That isn’t bad at all Harry! But we must test out your theory…. hmm…. let me think of a good spell to use…by the way…. it’s pretty impressive that you could do that with lectio mens. Let’s try numerus obscurum, it will make the lights in the room go out, and it will cast the room in total darkness.” Harry nodded and didn’t really know what to do. So he started to say it over and over in his head and started to focus on the lights in the room.
Harry was startled when the lights shut off simultaneously and the room was plunged into a thick darkness. “That was wonderful Harry! This proves that you are even more powerful then we originally thought! Now let’s try numerus lux lucis, this will make the lights come back on.” Harry focused on the light and started to say it over and over in his head and the lights flashed back on. He wasn’t surprised to see the twinkling in Dumbledore’s eyes.
“So … I don’t need a wand?” Harry asked and pulled his wand out of his sleeve. “Of course you need your wand Harry. Every wizard has a wand, even ones that don’t use them. This will be a great advantage for us against Voldermort…. but we need to keep this secret so he doesn’t find out. You will have to use your wand even though you don’t need it ok Harry?” Harry nodded and sighed, “Can I tell Ron and Hermione?” Dumbledore nodded, “Of course Harry, you tell them everything even if I tell you not to.” Harry nodded and then stood up.
“I should go now sir, I don’t want to be late for Potions.” Dumbledore nodded and Harry went on his way.

Harry walked into Potions and sat down in his usual seat. He was tired of having to hide everything from everyone. He sighed and listened to Severus tell them what they were making and watched as Severus wrote how to do it on the board. Harry set to work, trying to block out the questioning gaze of Ron and Hermione, and surprisingly enough Draco. Harry turned his attention back to his potion only to realize that he had stirred it for too long and it was now too thick and turning a dirty brown color.
Before he could correct the potion Severus was next to him glaring. “Mr. Potter, you did better at this subject when you were blind, if you are so incompetent then perhaps we should send you back to your relatives and have them redo what we undid.” Harry stared up at his Potion’s master in shock. Why would he say that? Harry didn’t understand. “20 points from Gryffindor!” and with that Severus went on to the next table.
Harry cleaned his cauldron with magic and put everything away. He had to get out of the room before the tears that were building up in his eyes fell down. He left the room without saying anything, and didn’t miss the shocked silence when the door closed behind him. The last time Harry had cried was when Sirius died….
Harry walked up to his room and sat on his bed letting the tears fall freely down his face. He laid down on the bed and watched the metallic swirls for a long time and was startled out of his reverie by a knock on the door. “Who is it?” Harry mumbled and was surprised to here Severus’ voice. “It’s your teacher, I would like an explanation of why you left my room, so if you would so kindly open the door…” “I left because you were an asshole, and no I will not open the door.” Harry interrupted angrily and then winced when he realized he had just called Severus Snape and asshole.
“50 points from Gryffindor for calling a teacher a bad name Mr. Potter!” The door busted open and Harry didn’t even bother to wipe the tearstains off his face. Severus looked at him and paled a little, he hadn’t meant to make Harry cry. “Harry…” “What do you want Professor.” Harry spat and Severus flinched. “Harry, you have to understand that I can’t just start being nice to you in front of everyone, it could very possibly ruin my cover.” Harry glared at him, “Your right, and maybe I should go back to the Dursley’s, maybe I should go back there and live with them, and let them bloody beat me all day long.”
Severus sighed and sat down next to Harry. “Of course your not going back there Harry, I’m ….I didn’t mean it, you know that.” Harry nodded and wiped the tear that was slowly falling down his cheek. “I know you didn’t mean it Sev…it just hurt…I think I am going to take a nap instead of going down to dinner.” Severus nodded and walked out of the room, closing the door securely behind him.
