Forever Blowing Bubbles--Short Chapter

Chapter Four
Forever Blowing Bubbles—Short Chapter

Severus tried not to reflect on the events of the morning, opting instead to busy himself arranging and rearranging his private library and his private potions stocks. He had just passed into his living room to switch out his coffee table reading when suddenly, the fire flared and Minerva McGonagall came spinning into view.

“Ah, Severus. It’s good you’re awake. There will be a staff meeting in my office, starting in an hour. You need to be there on time… oh, and you have to stay for the duration of the meeting.”

The old bat had the nerve to wink at him as she disappeared as suddenly as she had arrived.

For the next hour, Severus busied himself sorting ingredients, not allowing his mind to dwell on the odd events of the morning. He arrived to the meeting fashionably late, just to irk Minerva.

“Severus,” she said sharply, “so good of you to join us. I had a feeling you would be running behind, so I held the meeting until you found fit to grace us with your presence.”

He glared darkly at her.

“Well, we have but one order of business today, so good news is we should not be here long. I have decided that Hogwarts will celebrate a Harvest Ball, set for next weekend. Normally, we begin a ball by allowing those we are celebrating to start the dancing, but since we are not celebrating an event, I thought we would start out by having our professors dance with the head girls and boys. I have taken the liberty of assigning dance partners, to prevent any lack of decorum.

Let us begin then… Severus, you will be dancing with Miss Granger.”

After that, Severus heard nothing. Absolutely nothing of the resulting list or indeed the rest of the meeting. It was the first meeting he missed while being present, actually. This was really getting too complicated. He needed to have conversations with some people. The moment the meeting was over, he stalked up to Minerva with a severe look on his face.

“I need to consult Albus over a private matter,” he said so low the old witch barely heard him.

“Of course, Severus. Go now. I am sure there will be disputes to settle. I’ll not rearrange you, of course, without permission.”

“See that you don’t,” he said, already at the door.

Severus’ head and heart were racing. What would the old man say about this situation? Would he be disgusted? Angry? Would he tell Minerva to sack him? Only one way to find out.

After saying the password and being carried up to the Headmistress’ office, he threw the door open and covered all the other nosy, busy-body portraits so they could not overhear, and addressed Albus Dumbledore.

“Headmaster, wake up.”

The old man had dozed off in his frame.

“Severus,” he said cheerily, “what can I do for you?”

“I have to tell you something. It is terrible…”

“That remains to be seen,” Dumbledore said evenly.

“Lately I have found myself… having feelings for… for a student,” the last bit was mumbled so that Dumbledore scarcely caught it.

“A student of age, Severus?”

“Well—yes.”

“Don’t tell me,” the old man said with mirth in his voice and a twinkle in his eye, “Hermione Granger?”

Severus merely stared at him.

“Don’t look at me like that, Severus, with such shock. I had that figured out a long time ago. You would be wise to pursue her, and be happy. Please,” he said, sounding a bit frail, “be happy.”

Severus found himself unable to speak. He did not know what to say.

“And now I am going back to sleep. The life and work of a portrait is draining, frankly. Until later.”

Almost immediately, the old man dozed off again.

Severus made his way back to the dungeons. He had some very Slytherin scheming to do.

A/N: Up next--there is a ball, a green monster, and something good. :)
